Claims
- 1. An acid dye stain-resistant and soil-resistant fiber-forming polyamide composition comprising:
(a) a fiber-forming polyamide, and (b) a sulfonated polyester concentrate at least a portion of which associates with free acid dye sites in said polyamide, thereby disabling said acid dye sites in fibers formed from said composition from taking up acid dye stains.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said sulfonated polyester concentrate associates with acid dye sites comprising amine groups and/or amide linkages in said polyamide.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein said sulfonated polyester concentrate comprises a reagent and a thermoplastic polyester having a melting point of less than 270° C.
- 4. The composition of claim 3, wherein said sulfonated polyester concentrate contains about 10 to 65% by weight of said reagent.
- 5. The composition of claim 3, wherein said thermoplastic polyester is selected from the group consisting of PET, PTT, PBT, PETG, poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-isophthalate), and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The composition of claim 3, wherein said reagent is a salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 7. The composition of claim 6, wherein said reagent is an alkali metal salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said reagent is the lithium salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 9. The composition of claim 7, wherein said reagent is the sodium salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 10. The composition of claim 1, wherein said fiber-forming polyamide is selected from the group consisting of PA6, PA66, copolymers of PA6 and PA66, and mixtures thereof.
- 11. The composition of claim 1, wherein said fiber-forming polyamide has a relative solution viscosity between about 2.9 and 4.0.
- 12. The composition of claim 1, wherein said fiber-forming polyamide has an amine end group level of less than about 35 equivalents per 106 g.
- 13. The composition of claim 1, additionally containing an adjuvant.
- 14. The composition of claim 13, wherein said adjuvant is an anti-oxidant, stabilizer, colorant, processing aid, nucleating agent, antimicrobial, melt viscosity enhancer, flame retardant, or mixtures thereof.
- 15. The composition of claim 1, wherein said composition contains between about 1000 and 3000 ppm of sulfur.
- 16. A fiber formed from an acid dye stain-resistant and soil-resistant fiber-forming polyamide composition comprising:
(a) a fiber-forming polyamide, and (b) a sulfonated polyester concentrate at least a portion of which associates with free acid dye sites in said polyamide, thereby disabling said acid dye sites in fibers formed from said composition from taking up acid dye stains.
- 17. A carpet made of fibers formed from an acid dye stain-resistant and soil-resistant fiber-forming polyamide composition comprising:
(a) a fiber-forming polyamide, and (b) a sulfonated polyester concentrate at least a portion of which associates with free acid dye sites in said polyamide, thereby disabling said acid dye sites in fibers formed from said composition from taking up acid dye stains.
- 18. A method of producing a stain-resistant and soil-resistant polyamide yarn comprising the steps of:
(a) melt compounding a reagent and a thermoplastic polyester to produce a sulfonated polyester concentrate; (b) adding the sulfonated polyester concentrate formed in step (a) to a fiber-forming polyamide to form a fiber-forming polyamide composition, (c) melt extrusion spinning said fiber-forming polyamide composition to form yarns, and (d) drawing and texturing said yarns to produce multiplicity of bulked continuous filaments therein.
