Claims
- 1. An acid dye stain-resistant and soil resistant fiber-forming polyamide composition comprising:
(a) a fiber-forming polyamide, and (b) a concentrate including a melt-compounded blend of a thermoplastic carrier resin and a sulfonated reagent at least a portion of which associates with free acid dye sites in said fiber-forming polyamide, thereby disabling said dye sites in fibers formed from said composition from taking up acid dye stains.
- 2. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said reagent is substantially colorless.
- 3. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said sulfonated reagent comprises a reagent selected from the group consisting of sulfonated aromatic compounds, and mixtures thereof.
- 4. A composition as defined in claim 3 wherein said sulfonated aromatic compound is a derivative of sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 5. A composition as defined in claim 4 wherein said derivative of a sulfoisophthalic acid is a metal salt of sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 6. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein said metal salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid comprises a metal salt including a metal selected from the group consisting of an alkaline metal and an alkaline earth metal.
- 7. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein said metal salt comprises a lithium salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 8. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein said metal salt comprises a sodium salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 9. A composition as defined in claim 3 wherein said sulfonated aromatic compound comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of 3-sulfobenzoic acid, a sodium salt of 3-sulfobenzoic acid, and a lithium salt of 3-sulfobenzoic acid.
- 10. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said fiber-forming polyamide comprises a polyamide selected from the group consisting of polyamide 6, polyamide 6,6, copolymers of polyamide 6 and polyamide 6,6, polyamide 6,12, polyamide 6,9, polyamide 11, polyamide 12, and mixtures thereof.
- 11. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said fiber-forming polyamide has a relative solution viscosity between about 2.0 and about 4.0.
- 12. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein said fiber-forming polyamide has an amine end group level of less than about 50 equivalents per 106 g.
- 13. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said fiber-forming polyamide has an amine end group level of less than about 30 equivalents per 106 g.
- 14. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic carrier resin comprises a condensation polymer.
- 15. The composition of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic carrier resin comprises a polyester selected from the group consisting of poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(trimethylene terephthalate), poly(butylene terephthalate), copolymers of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and cyclohexanedimethanol, poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-isophthalate), and mixtures thereof.
- 16. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic carrier resin comprises a polyamide selected from the group consisting of polyamide 6, polyamide 6,6, copolymers of polyamide 6 and polyamide 6,6, polyamide 6,12, terpolymers of polyamide 6,6,6 and 6,12, polyamide 6,9, polyamide 11, polyamide 12, poly(trimethylhexamethylene terephthalamide), poly(m-xylylene adipamide), and mixtures thereof.
- 17. A composition as defined in claim 1 further comprising an adjuvant.
- 18. A composition as defined in claim 17 wherein said adjuvant comprises an adjuvant selected from the group consisting of an antioxidant, a stabiliser, a colorant, a processing aid, a nucleating agent, an antimicrobial, an antistatic additive, an antiozonant, a lubricant, a stainproofing agent, a soilproofing agent, a melt viscosity enhancer, a flame retardant, and a mixture thereof.
- 19. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said concentrate includes from about 10 to about 65% by weight of said sulfonated reagent.
- 20. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said composition comprises between about 1000 ppm and about 3000 ppm sulfur.
- 21. A fiber formed from the composition of claim 1.
- 22. A carpet or floorcovering comprising the fiber of claim 21.
- 23. A textile article comprising the fiber of claim 21.
- 24. A method of producing a stain-resistant and soil-resistant polyamide yarn of composition of claim 1 comprising the steps of:
(a) melt compounding a sulfonated reagent with a thermoplastic carrier resin to form a concentrate; (b) adding said concentrate to a fiber-forming polyamide to form a fiber-forming polyamide composition; (c) melt extrusion spinning said fiber-forming polyamide composition to form a yarn; and (d) drawing said yarn.
- 25. A method as defined in claim 24 further comprising the step of texturing said yarn to produce a bulked continuous filament yarn (BCF yarn).
- 26. A method as defined in claim 24 further comprising the step of associating said sulfonated reagent with acid dye sites of said fiber-forming polyamide thereby substantially reducing the ability of said sites to interact or react with an acid dye stain.
- 27. A method as defined in claim 24 further comprising the step of providing said concentrate with a moisture level prior to melt extrusion spinning of less than about 700 ppm.
- 28. A method as defined in claim 24 further comprising the step of providing said concentrate with a moisture level prior to melt extrusion spinning of less than about 200 ppm.
- 29. A method as defined in claim 24 further comprising the step of providing said fiber-forming polyamide with a moisture level prior to melt extrusion spinning of less than about 1500 ppm.
- 30. A method as defined in claim 24 further comprising the step of providing said fiber-forming polyamide with a moisture level prior to melt extrusion spinning of less than about 1000 ppm.
