Claims
- 1. A process for forming a fiber from a melt processable polymeric blend which comprises:
- a) from about 50 to about 90 parts of a first polymer containing units of the structure ##STR33## and optionally units of the structure ##STR34## wherein R is H or --(--CH.sub.2).sub.m --CH.sub.3, where m is 0 to 7 and R.sub.1 is an alkyleneoxy group, and R.sub.3 is H or CH.sub.3 ;
- b. from about 10 to about 50 parts of a second polymer containing from about 5 to about 95 parts of units of the structure ##STR35## wherein n is 2, 3, 4, or 5, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 may be the same or different and are H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, or --C.sub.2 H.sub.4 --(O--C.sub.2 H.sub.4)-- in a cyclic form, and where R.sub.6 is a urea or cyclic ureido structure of the formula ##STR36## from about 94 to about 4 parts of units of the structure ##STR37## wherein R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; and from about 1 to about 10 parts of a copolymerizable unsaturated acid, anhydride or glycidyl-containing ester, the process comprising:
- (a) heating the blend to form a polymer melt;
- (b) forcing the blend through one or more dies to form one or more filaments;
- (c) stranding the filaments to form a fiber.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the melt is forced by an extruder through a multi-element die to form multiple filaments, and the multiple filaments are stranded to form a multi-stranded polymer.
