Claims
- 1. A process for immobilizing a molecule having a fluorophore thereon on a hydrophilic polymer, said molecule comprising an ionophore having selectivity substantially limited to potassium ions, said ionophore selected from the group consisting of 2,2-bis[3,4-(15-crown-5)-2-nitrophenylcarboxymethyl]tetradecane, Val-inomycin, 18Crown-6, and derivatives thereof, and said fluorohore selected from the group consisting of Rhodamine-B, Rhodamine-110, Fluorescein, and 2,7'-dichlorofluoroscein, comprising forming a solution of said molecule in a monomer and initiating a polymerization reaction to form a gel comprising said hydrophilic polymer.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said molecule consists essentially of 2,2-bis[3,4-(15-crown-5)-2-nitrophenylcarbamoxymethyl]tetradecane.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said fluorophore group consists essentially of Rhodamine-B.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein said molecule has an aliphatic part having a free end and said fluorophore is located on said free end.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein said molecule consists essentially of 2,2-bis[3,4-(15-crown-5)-2-nitrophenylcarbamoxymethyl]tetradecane and said fluorophore group consists essentially of Rhodamine-B, located on the fourteenth carbon atom of the tetradecane chain and is first dissolved in isopropanol to form a first solution, said solution is then added to a second solution of acrylamide and N,N'-methylenediacrylamide in water, and peroxidisulfate is added thereto to initiate polymerization, which is allowed to proceed to form said gel.
