Claims
- 1. A head of an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- a metal superstructure having plural port bores; and
- port liners extending the entire length of each port bore, the port liners each comprising a tube-shaped structure having at least one layer of fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite (FRCMC) material comprising a polymer-derived ceramic resin in its ceramic form and fibers.
- 2. The head of claim 1, wherein the tube-shaped structure has one FRCMC layer forming a sole, solid wall of the structure.
- 3. The head of claim 1, wherein the tube-shaped structure comprises two FRCMC layers forming inner and outer walls of the structure, respectively, said inner and outer walls being separated by an intervening space.
- 4. The head of claim 3, wherein the intervening space is filled with a thermally insulating material.
- 5. The head of claim 3, wherein the intervening space is evacuated and exhibits substantially a vacuum pressure.
- 6. The head of claim 3, wherein the intervening space is filled with a gas.
