Claims
- 1. A process for forming spacers between first and second components having respective first and second surfaces, the components for use in a flat panel display device, the process comprising the steps of:defining a plurality of attachment sites on the first surface of the first component; forming a bundle of glass fibers having substantially parallel axes and a face substantially perpendicular to the axes of the fibers; placing the bundle of fibers on the first surface with the face of the bundle against the first surface; and attaching the glass fibers to at least some of the plurality of spacer attachment sites.
- 2. The process of claim 1, further comprising removing glass fibers that do not adhere to the first surface, placing the second surface of the second component against the fibers so that the fibers extend from the first surface to the second surface, and hermetically sealing the first and second components together.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein the second component is a conductive electrode with a voltage provided thereto.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein one of the first and second components is an anode and the other of the first and second components is a cathode, the anode and the cathode extending in parallel to each other and being sealed together with a vacuum therebetween.
- 5. A process of claim 4, wherein the display device is a field emission display and the cathode includes a plurality of conical electron emitters and a conductive layer serving as a gate and disposed around the emitters.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein the anode is a faceplate of a field emission display and includes a transparent substrate, a transparent conductive layer over the substrate, and phosphors over the conductive layer.
- 7. The process of claim 5, wherein the first or second surface is the surface of the gate.
- 8. The process of claim 5, wherein the anode is a faceplate of a field emission display and includes pixel regions and matrix material between the pixel regions, wherein the bundle has a diameter smaller than a width of the matrix material, and wherein the attachment sites include adhesive formed on the matrix material.
- 9. A process of claim 8, wherein the cathode includes a plurality of conical electron emitters and a conductive layer serving as a gate and disposed around the emitters, the pixel regions include electroluminescent material that provides light when electrons are emitted from the emitters.
- 10. The process of claim 9, wherein the anode and the cathode extend in parallel to each other and are sealed together with a vacuum there between.
- 11. The process of claim 8, wherein the placing is done with a pick and place machine.
- 12. A process for forming spacers for use in a flat panel display device having a cathode with a plurality of electron emitters and an anode having pixel regions and opaque material between the pixel regions, the process comprising:defining a plurality of attachment sites on the opaque material; having substantially parallel axes and a face substantially perpendicular to the axes of the spacers, the bundle having a diameter less than a width of the opaque material; placing a bundle of spacers having substantially parallel axes and a face substantially perpendicular to the axes of the spaces on the opaque material; and attaching the spacers to at least some of the plurality of attachment sites.
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein the placing is performed with a pick and place machine.
- 14. A process for forming spacers on a first component of a display device, the process comprising:defining a plurality of attachment sites on a surface of the first component; providing a plurality of glass spacers against the surface so that a first group of spacers contacts the defined attachment sites and a second group does not contact the attachment sites, the spacers extending away from the surface; attaching the first group of spacers to the attachment sites; and removing the second group of spacers.
- 15. The process of claim 14, wherein the spacers extend to a first and second component, wherein one of the first and second components is an anode and the other is a cathode, the process including positioning the anode and the cathode parallel to each other and sealing the anode and cathode together with a vacuum therebetween.
- 16. A process of claim 15, wherein the cathode is for a field emission display and includes a plurality of conical electron emitters and a conductive layer serving as a gate and disposed around the emitters.
- 17. The process of claim 15, wherein the anode is a faceplate of a field emission display and includes a transparent substrate, a transparent conductive layer over the substrate, and phosphors over the conductive layer.
- 18. The process of claim 14, wherein providing a plurality includes providing a bundle of parallel glass fibers against the surface.
