Claims
- 1. A structural fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite member consisting essentially of
- a plurality of oxidation-stable reinforcing fibers;
- a ceramic matrix comprising ceramic particles selected from the group consisting of alumina, zirconia, yttria, silica, hafnia and mixtures thereof and a silicate ceramic bonding phase, the ceramic matrix being interspersed about the reinforcing fibers so as to directly contact the reinforcing fibers;
- the ceramic bonding phase being in intimate contact with the ceramic particles and the reinforcing fibers so as to directly bond together the ceramic particles and the reinforcing fibers; and
- controlled porosity distributed throughout the ceramic matrix so as to control the strength of the bond between the ceramic bonding phase and the reinforcing fibers;
- wherein the ceramic matrix is formed by the ceramic particles and a slurry of a silicon-containing polymer substance selected from the group consisting of polycarbosilanes, vinylic polysilanes, dimethyl siloxane and silicone resins and combinations thereof, the slurry being interspersed about the reinforcing fibers and heated at a sufficient temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere so that the silicon-containing polymer substance is transformed to yield the ceramic bonding phase; and
- wherein the fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite member is characterized by an ultimate tensile strength of greater than about 15 ksi and a percent elongation at failure of greater than about 0.2%.
- 2. The member of claim 1 in which, by volume, the reinforcing fibers comprise from about 10 percent to about 50 percent of the member.
- 3. The member of claim 1 in which, by volume, said controlled porosity comprises from about 10 percent to about 40 percent of the matrix.
- 4. The member of claim 1 in which the reinforcing fibers are ceramic, thereby defining a ceramic matrix, ceramic fiber reinforced, composite member.
- 5. The member of claim 1 which includes in the ceramic matrix a filler of an inorganic material having a lathy crystal shape.
- 6. The member of claim 1 in which a filler of an inorganic material having a lathy crystal shape is included in the range of about 7 percent to about 50 percent by total weight of ceramic particles, ceramic bonding phase and filler.
- 7. A fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite member consisting essentially of
- a plurality of plies molded at a first elevated temperature and pressure, each ply further consisting essentially of:
- a plurality of oxidation stable reinforcing fibers in the form of a fabric;
- a ceramic matrix comprising ceramic particles selected from the group consisting of alumina, zirconia, yttria, silica, hafnia and mixtures thereof, and a silicate ceramic bonding phase, the ceramic matrix being interspersed about the reinforcing fibers so as to directly contact the reinforcing fibers;
- the ceramic bonding phase being in intimate contact with the ceramic particles and the reinforcing fibers so as to directly bond together the ceramic particles and the reinforcing fibers; and
- controlled porosity distributed throughout the ceramic matrix so as to control the strength of the bond between the ceramic bonding phase and the reinforcing fibers;
- wherein the ceramic matrix is formed by a slurry of the ceramic particles and a polymer substance selected from the group consisting of polycarbosilanes, vinylic polysilanes, dimethyl siloxane and silicone resins and combinations thereof, the slurry being interspersed about the reinforcing fibers and heated in an oxidizing atmosphere to a second elevated temperature above the first temperature so that the polymer substance is transformed to yield the ceramic bonding phase; and
- wherein the fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composite member is characterized by an ultimate tensile strength of greater than about 15 ksi and a percent elongation at failure of greater than about 0.2%.
- 8. The member of claim 7 in which said plurality of oxidation stable reinforcing fibers is present from about 10 percent to about 50 percent by volume of the member.
- 9. The member of claim 7 in which the reinforcing fibers in fabric form are ceramic, thereby defining a, ceramic matrix, ceramic fiber reinforced composite member.
- 10. The member of claim 7 which includes in the ceramic matrix a filler of an inorganic material having a lathy crystal shape.
- 11. The member of claim 7 further including a filler of an inorganic material having a lathy-type crystal shape in the range of about 7 percent to about 50 percent by total weight ceramic particles, ceramic bonding phase and filler.
- 12. A polymer matrix composite member consisting essentially of
- a matrix of a polymer substance selected from the group consisting of polycarbosilanes, vinylic polysilanes, dimethyl siloxane and silicone resins and combinations thereof which transforms upon heating in an oxidizing atmosphere to yield a silicate ceramic phase;
- a plurality of oxidation stable reinforcing fibers distributed within the matrix such that the polymer substance of the matrix intimately and directly contacts the reinforcing fibers;
- ceramic particles selected from the group consisting of alumina, zirconia, yttria, silica, hafnia and mixtures thereof uniformly distributed throughout the matrix; and
- wherein, after transforming upon heating in an oxidizing environment, the member is characterized by an ultimate tensile strength of greater than about 15 ksi and a percent elongation at failure of greater than about 0.2%.
