Claims
- 1. A fibrous-filtration-face-mask that comprises:
- a composite structure that is formed to fit over the nose and mouth of a person and that comprises a filter layer that includes corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber having a solidity of 0.1 or less, the composite structure also comprising a means for retaining the corrugated shape of the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric micro fiber, the shape-retaining means being secured to the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber at valleys of the corrugations such that the shape-retaining means is not coextensive with the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber between two adjacent valleys.
- 2. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber provides the face mask with an effective surface area of at least 1.3 times an effective surface area of a face mask that has a non-corrugated filter and is of substantially the same size.
- 3. The face mask of claim 2, wherein the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber provides the face mask with an effective surface area of at least 1.6 times an effective surface area of a face mask that has a non-corrugated filter and is of substantially the same size.
- 4. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the composite structure has 1 to 4 corrugations per centimeter of composite structure.
- 5. The face mask of claim 1, wherein there is 8 to 20 millimeters of corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric micro fiber between two adjacent valleys.
- 6. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the composite structure has a corrugation ratio of greater than 1.5:1.
- 7. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the shape-retaining means is a nonwoven fabric that is secured to the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber by intermittent bonds spaced at a distance of 0.5 to 5 centimeters along each valley.
- 8. The face mask of claim 7, wherein intermittent bonds on a first valley are offset from intermittent bonds on an adjacent second valley.
- 9. The face mask of claim 7, wherein the intermittent bonds occupy less than 5 percent of the corrugated surface area of the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber.
- 10. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the composite structure comprises a plurality of corrugated nonwoven webs of polymeric microfiber, which plurality of corrugated nonwoven webs are coextensive with each other and are secured to the shape-retaining means.
- 11. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric micro fiber comprises at least 90 weight percent microfiber based on the weight of the fibrous material, and wherein the microfiber comprises polypropylene and is electrically charged.
- 12. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the composite structure is juxtaposed against a cup-shaped shaping layer.
- 13. The face mask of claim 1, wherein the corrugated nonwoven web of polymeric microfiber follows a sinusoidal-type curve when viewed from the side elevation and wherein adjacent sides of adjacent corrugations do not make substantial contact with each other.
