Claims
- 1. A fibrous-reinforced sheet comprising:
- (A) about 5 to about 25 wt. % fibers;
- (B) at least about 50 wt. % calcium carbonate filler;
- (C) about 2 to about 30 wt. % of resin binder; and
- (D) about 0.01 to about 0.5 wt. % of a cationic polymeric flocculant having a charge-density of about 2 to about 5.2 equivalents of cationic nitrogen per kilogram of polymer.
- 2. A sheet according to claim 1 effective for use as backing for vinyl floor covering comprising: (A) about 5 to about 15 wt. % of fibers; (B) at least about 70 wt. % of calcium carbonate; (C) about 5 to about 15 wt. % of binder; (D) about 0.1 to about 2 wt. % of a coagulant; and (E) about 0.01 to about 0.1 wt. % of said cationic flocculant.
- 3. A sheet according to claim 2 comprising about 75 to about 85 wt. % of calcium carbonate.
- 4. A sheet according to claim 3 including about 80 wt. % of calcium carbonate.
- 5. A sheet according to claim 1 wherein the charge-density is at least about 3.5 equivalents.
- 6. A sheet according to claim 1 wherein the flocculant is a cationic polymer prepared by polymerizing a quaternary ammonium salt of 2-(meth)acryloyloxyethyl-N, N-dimethylamine with acrylamide.
- 7. A sheet according to claim 2 in which said fibers include cellulosic fibers and glass fibers.
- 8. A fibrous reinforced sheet comprising:
- (A) about 5 to about 25 wt. % fibers;
- (B) at least about 50 wt. % ground limestone rock filler;
- (C) about 2 to about 30 wt. % of resin binder; and
- (D) about 0.01 to about 0.5 wt. % of a cationic polymeric flocculant having a charge-density of about 2 to about 5.2 equivalents of cationic nitrogen per kilogram of polymer.
- 9. A white sheet according to claim 1 including a sufficient amount of carbon black to impart opacity to the white sheet and to retain the white appearance of the sheet.
- 10. A sheet according to claim 8 including about 0.0001 to about 0.05 wt. % of carbon black.
- 11. A sheet according to claim 8 including about 0.001 to about 0.01 wt. % of carbon black.
- 12. A white sheet according to claim 8 including a sufficient amount of carbon black to impart opacity to the white sheet and to retain the white appearance of the sheet.
- 13. A sheet according to claim 12 including about 0.0001 to about 0.05 wt. % of carbon black.
- 14. A sheet according to claim 12 including about 0.001 to about 0.01 wt. % of carbon black.
- 15. A sheet according to claim 8 in which said fibers include cellulosic fibers and glass fibers.
- 16. A sheet according to claim 1 wherein said binder comprises an anionic polymer binder.
- 17. A sheet according to claim 2 wherein said binder comprises an anionic polymer binder.
- 18. A sheet according to claim 8 wherein said binder comprises an anionic polymer binder.
- 19. A sheet according to claim 16 wherein said anionic binder comprises a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex.
- 20. A sheet according to claim 18 wherein said anionic binder comprises a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex.
