Claims
- 1. A fifth wheel hitch operable between a fully locked condition and a fully released condition, comprising:
- a top hitch plate defining a tapered mouth and throat for receiving a kingpin;
- a pivotal lock jaw at said throat;
- a locking plunger shiftable between an extended locking position engaging said jaw and a retracted position for releasing said jaw, and being biased toward said extended locking position to provide a primary lock;
- a release lever pivotally mounted to said hitch plate and engaging said plunger to move said plunger therewith when actuated, for releasing said primary lock;
- a hitch release rod subassembly having an outer pull handle and an inner pivotal connection to said release lever for actuating said release lever;
- said hitch having a fixed member defining an abutment surface;
- said release rod subassembly having a secondary stop aligned with said abutment surface in the fully locked condition to serve as a secondary lock, and shiftable out of alignment with said abutment surface to release said secondary lock;
- said release rod subassembly having a limited play connection between its ends, enabling said subassembly to be lengthened a limited amount from an unlengthened condition to a lengthened condition, and biased toward said unlengthened condition; and
- said release rod subassembly having an indicator which provides a change in appearance between said unlengthened condition and said lengthened condition;
- wherein said limited play connection is coupled to and located between the outer pull handle and the inner pivotal connection.
- 2. A fifth wheel hitch operable between a fully locked condition and a fully released condition, comprising:
- a top hitch plate defining a tapered mouth and throat for receiving a kingpin;
- a pivotal lock jaw at said throat;
- a locking plunger shiftable between an extended locking position engaging said jaw and a retracted position for releasing said jaw, and being biased toward said extended locking position to provide a primary lock;
- a release lever pivotally mounted to said hitch plate and engaging said plunger to move said plunger therewith when actuated, for releasing said primary lock;
- a hitch release rod subassembly having an outer pull handle and an inner pivotal connection to said release lever for actuating said release lever;
- said hitch having a fixed member defining an abutment surface;
- said release rod subassembly having a secondary stop aligned with said abutment surface in the fully locked condition to serve as a secondary lock, and shiftable out of alignment with said abutment surface to release said secondary lock;
- said release rod subassembly having a limited play connection between its ends, enabling said subassembly to be lengthened a limited amount from an unlengthened condition to a lengthened condition, and biased toward said unlengthened condition; and
- said release rod subassembly having an indicator which provides a change in appearance between said unlengthened condition and said lengthened condition;
- wherein said indicator comprises a portion of said release rod subassembly which is visible in one of said conditions and not visible in the other of said conditions; and
- wherein the portion is visible or not visible as seen from above the top hitch plate.
- 3. A fifth wheel hitch operable between a fully locked condition and a fully released condition, comprising:
- a top hitch plate defining a tapered mouth and throat for receiving a kingpin;
- a pivotal lock jaw at said throat;
- a locking plunger shiftable between an extended locking position engaging said jaw and a retracted position for releasing said jaw, and being biased toward said extended locking position to provide a primary lock;
- a release lever pivotally mounted to said hitch plate and engaging said plunger to move said plunger therewith when actuated, for releasing said primary lock;
- a hitch release rod subassembly having an outer pull handle and an inner pivotal connection to said release lever for actuating said release lever;
- said hitch having a fixed member defining an abutment surface;
- said release rod subassembly having a secondary stop aligned with said abutment surface in the fully locked condition to serve as a secondary lock, and shiftable out of alignment with said abutment surface to release said secondary lock;
- said release rod subassembly having a limited play connection between its ends, enabling said subassembly to be lengthened a limited amount from an unlengthened condition to a lengthened condition, and biased toward said unlengthened condition; and
- said release rod subassembly having an indicator which provides a change in appearance between said unlengthened condition and said lengthened condition;
- wherein said indicator includes a first portion that moves relative to a second portion, said second portion obscures the visibility of said first portion when said release rod subassembly is in a first one of said lengthened and unlengthened conditions and said second portion does not obscure the visibility of said first portion when in a second one of said lengthened and unlengthened positions.
- 4. A fifth wheel hitch operable between a fully locked condition and a fully released condition, comprising:
- a top hitch plate defining a tapered mouth and throat for receiving a kingpin;
- a pivotal lock jaw at said throat;
- a locking plunger shiftable between an extended locking position engaging said jaw, and a retracted position for releasing said jaw, and being biased toward said extended locking position to provide a primary lock;
- a release lever pivotally mounted to said hitch plate and engaging said plunger to move said plunger therewith when actuated, for releasing said primary lock;
- a hitch release rod subassembly having an outer pull handle and an inner pivotal connection to said release lever for actuating said release lever;
- said hitch having a fixed member defining an abutment surface;
- said release rod subassembly having a secondary stop aligned with said abutment surface in the fully locked condition to serve as a secondary lock, and shiftable out of alignment with said abutment surface to release said secondary lock;
- said release rod subassembly having a limited play connection between its ends, enabling said subassembly to be lengthened a limited amount from its normal length condition to a lengthened condition, and biased toward said normal length condition; and
- said release rod subassembly having an indicator which provides a change in appearance between said normal length condition and said lengthened condition;
- wherein said fixed member of said hitch has a window and said release rod subassembly extends through said window, said release rod subassembly has first, second and third segments in an offset relationship such that segments one and two and segments two and three are in overlapping condition to each other, said window has a limited width accommodating only two of said three segments at a time, said secondary stop being on said first segment, said handle being on said third segment, and said limited play connection being between said second and third segments.
- 5. The fifth wheel hitch in claim 4 wherein said second and third segments extend through said window when said hitch is fully locked, and said first and second segments extend through said window when said hitch is fully released.
