Claims
- 1. An improved filament trimmer of the type having a trimmer head, a spool carried inside the head for retaining a coiled supply of filament line with a free end of the line extending radially outwardly from the spool through an exit aperture in the head to form a cutting length of line located exteriorly of the head, the spool and head being selectively rotatable relative to one another to feed out additional line from the coiled supply thereof through the exit aperture to replenish the cutting length of line, and drive means for rotating the trimmer head about an axis to cause the cutting length of line to be spun in a cutting plane to sever vegetation, wherein the improvement relates to the trimmer head and comprises:
- (a) two parts which are secured to one another to form the trimmer head, the parts when joined forming a cavity in which the spool is carried;
- (b) means for disconnecting the two parts from one another to open up the cavity to allow the spool to be installed in the trimmer head;
- (c) an elongated slot forming the exit aperture for the line with the slot being contained in one of the two parts, the slot having one end that is open when the parts are disconnected from one another with the open end of the slot being closed off by a portion of the other one of the two parts when the two parts are secured to one another, whereby the open end of the slot is accessible when the parts are disconnected from one another to allow the filament line carried on the spool to be laid into the slot through the open end thereof with the open end of the slot being thereafter closed by the other part when the parts are connected to one another to enclose the filament line in the slot, wherein the slot has a length when the parts are disconnected from one another which is substantially longer than a predetermined thickness of the filament line; and
- (d) means telescopically protruding into the slot when the parts are connected to one another for decreasing the length of the slot to shorten the distance the line can move back and forth within the slot during operation of the trimmer.
- 2. An improved filament trimmer as recited in claim 1, wherein the protruding means is carried on the other part and is located thereon to be received in the slot whenever the two parts are connected together.
- 3. An improved filament trimmer as recited in claim 2, wherein the protruding means comprises a tab integrally affixed to the other part.
- 4. An improved filament trimmer as recited in claim 3, wherein the slot has curved sides to form curved bearing surfaces for the filament line, and wherein the tab includes curved side surfaces adjacent the sides of the slot with the curves in the tab side surfaces conforming to the shape of the curves in the sides of the slot to help prevent the filament line from wedging between the tab and the sides of the slot.
- 5. An improved filament trimmer as recited in claim 1, wherein the length of the slot when the parts are disconnected from one another is approximately 7 to 9 times longer than the thickness of the filament line.
- 6. An improved filament trimmer as recited in claim 5, wherein the length of the slot when the parts are connected to one another and the telescopically protruding means is received within the slot is approximately 3 to 4 times longer than the thickness of the filament line.
- 7. An improved filament trimmer of the type having a trimmer head, a spool carried inside the head for retaining a coiled supply of filament line with a free end of the line extending radially outwardly from the spool through an exit aperture located in a peripheral sidewall of the head to form a cutting length of line located exteriorly of the head, the spool and head being selectively rotatable relative to one another to feed out additional line from the coiled supply thereof through the exit aperture to replenish the cutting length of line, and drive means for rotating the trimmer head about an axis to cause the cutting length of line to be spun in a cutting plane to sever vegetation, wherein the improvement relates to the exit aperture and comprises:
- (a) a slot located in the sidewall of the head with the slot extending between an open end located at an exterior edge of the sidewall and a closed end located interiorly of the exterior edge, wherein the filament line is capable of being placed into the slot simply by laying the line into the slot through the open end thereof from the exterior edge of the sidewall; and
- (b) means for closing the open end of the slot after the line is laid into the slot to complete the exit aperture and form a generally enclosed exit aperture around the line, the closing means, having a portion extending inwardly from the exterior edge of the sidewall and telescopically protruding into the slot towards the closed end of the slot to position the line generally adjacent the closed end of the slot and away from the exterior edge of the sidewall during operation of the trimmer.
- 8. An improved filament trimmer as recited in claim 7, wherein the head comprises a generally cup-shaped housing having a generally cylindrical sidewall that forms the peripheral sidewall of the head with the housing sidewall terminating in an annular open end that forms the exterior edge of the sidewall, the slot being located in the housing sidewall and extending from the annular open end thereof into an interior portion of the housing sidewall, and wherein the closing means comprises a generally circular cap secured to the housing and covering the annular open end of the housing sidewall.
- 9. An improved filament trimmer as recited in claim 8, wherein the protruding portion comprises a tab integrally fixed to the cap and located to extend into the open-ended slot when the cap is secured to the housing.
