Claims
- 1. A winder for thread comprising:
- a friction drive member rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said member to a winding position adjacent said member to receive and wind a thread from said member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position; and
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said member to a winding position adjacent said member to receive and wind a thread from said member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position;
- each said chuck being adapted to receive and releasably support at least one respective bobbin in use;
- said paths being so disposed that at least one chuck moving towards said winding position thereof intercepts a length of thread extending from said member to the package on the other chuck moving away from said winding position thereof with the thread extending in a plane tangential to said member and the package whereby the intercepted length of thread forms a wrap angle on the intercepting chuck or on a bobbin carried thereby sufficient to enable catching of the intercepted thread by the chuck or the bobbin.
- 2. A winder for thread comprising:
- a friction drive member rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to rotate with said member to receive and wind a thread from said member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position, said chuck having a first thread catching means thereon; and
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said member to a winding position adjacent said member to receive and wind a thread from said member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position; said chuck having a second thread catching means thereon whereby;
- said thread catching means on at least one chuck moving towards said winding position thereof is positioned to intercept a length of thread extending from said member to the package on the other chuck moving away from said winding position thereof within a plane tangential to said member and the package.
- 3. A winder as set forth in claim 2 wherein each said path is curvilinear.
- 4. A winder as set forth in claim 2 wherein each said path is rectilinear.
- 5. A winder as set forth in claim 2 wherein the winding position, in which the chucks first receive and wind thread, is the same for each chuck.
- 6. A winder as set forth in claim 2 wherein each said rest position is disposed on an opposite side of a plane passing through said longitudinal axis of said friction drive member.
- 7. A winder as set forth in claim 2 which further comprises a first controllable moving means connected to said first chuck for moving said first chuck along said first path.
- 8. A winder as set forth in claim 7 which further comprises means connected to said moving means for compensating the weight effect of a thread package building on said first chuck.
- 9. A winder as set forth in claim 7 wherein said moving means is a piston and a cylinder unit.
- 10. A winder as set forth in claim 9 which further comprises means connected to said unit for compensating the weight effect of a thread package building on said first chuck, said latter means including an adjustable pressure valve connected to said piston of said unit for supplying a pressure fluid to said piston, a fixed cam member and a cam follower for moving along said cam member and connected to said valve for adjusting said valve in response to the position of said cam follower on said cam member.
- 11. A winder as set forth in claim 2 which further comprises an auxiliary guide member movably mounted for movement into a position between said friction drive member and the other chuck to deform a thread extending between said friction drive member and a package on said one chuck into a position for catching on said catching means on said other chuck.
- 12. A method of winding thread into a series of bobbins, said method comprising the steps of:
- moving a first rotatable chuck along a first path from a first rest position to a winding position to be driven by a friction drive member to receive and wind a thread thereabout from the drive member;
- forming a package of thread about the chuck while returning the first chuck towards said first rest position along said first path;
- thereafter moving the chuck with the package of thread thereon along said first path towards said first rest position while extending a free length of thread from the drive member to the package in a plane tangential to the member and the package;
- moving a second rotatable chuck along a second path from a second rest position to a winding position to intercept the length of the thread in said plane extending to the first rotatable chuck; and
- thereafter forming a package of thread about the second chuck.
- 13. A winder for thread comprising:
- a friction drive member rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread;
- a first rotatable chuck;
- first means for moving said chuck along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to be driven by said drive member to receive and wind a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position;
- a second rotatable chuck; and
- second means for moving said second chuck along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to receive and wind a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position;
- the first and second paths being disposed on opposite sides of a plane passing through said axis and so disposed that at least one chuck moving towards said winding position thereof is positioned to intercept a length of thread extending from said friction drive member to the package on the other chuck moving away from said winding position thereof with the thread extending in a plane tangential to said friction drive member and the package.
- 14. A winder as set forth in claim 13 wherein said paths are curvilinear and which further comprises a first pivotably mounted swing arm carrying said first chuck and a second pivotably mounted swing arm carrying said second chuck.
- 15. A winder as set forth in claim 14 wherein said first means is connected to said first swing arm to pivot said first swing arm and said second means is connected to said second swing arm to pivot said second swing arm.
- 16. A method of winding thread onto a series of bobbins, said method comprising the steps of:
- moving a first rotatable chuck along a first path from a first rest position to a winding position to be driven by a friction drive member to receive and wind a thread thereabout;
- forming a package of thread about the chuck while returning the first chuck towards said first rest position along said first path;
- thereabout moving the chuck with the package of thread thereon along said first path towards said first rest position while extending a free length of thread directly from the friction drive member to the package in a plane tangential to the friction drive member and the package;
- moving a second rotatable chuck along a second path from a second rest position to a winding position to intercept the free length of the thread extending in said plane to the first rotatable chuck; and
- thereafter forming a package of thread about the second chuck.
- 17. A winder for thread comprising:
- a friction drive member rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent from said drive member to be driven by said drive member to receive and wind a thread from said friction drive member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position; and
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to receive and wind a thread from said friction drive member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position;
- the first and second paths being so disposed that a part on at least one chuck moving towards said winding position thereof is positioned to intercept a length of thread extending from said friction drive member to the package on the other chuck moving away from said winding position thereof.
- 18. A winder as set forth in claim 17 wherein each said path is curvilinear and each chuck is reciprocal in a respective path.
- 19. A winder as set forth in claim 17 wherein each said path is rectilinear.
- 20. A winder for thread comprising:
- a friction drive member rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to be driven by said drive member to receive and wind a thread from said drive member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position; and
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to receive and wind a thread from said drive member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position;
- each said chuck being adapted to receive and releasably support at least one respective bobbin in use;
- said paths being so disposed that at least one chuck moving towards said winding position thereof intercepts a length of thread extending from said friction drive member to the package on the other chuck moving away from said winding position thereof whereby the intercepted length of thread forms a wrap angle on the intercepting chuck or on a bobbin carried thereby sufficient to enable catching of the intercepted thread by the chuck or the bobbin.
- 21. A winder for thread comprising:
- a friction drive member rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to be driven by said drive member to receive and wind a thread from said drive member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position; said chuck having a first thread catching means thereon; and
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to receive and wind a thread from said drive member into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position; said chuck having a second thread catching means thereon whereby;
- said thread catching means on at least on chuck moving towards said winding position thereof is positioned to intercept a length of thread extending from said friction drive member to the package on the other chuck moving away from said winding position thereof.
- 22. A winder for thread comprising:
- a friction drive member rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread;
- a first rotatable chuck;
- first means for moving said chuck along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to be driven thereby to receive and wind a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position;
- a second rotatable chuck; and
- second means for moving said second chuck along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said friction drive member to a winding position adjacent said drive member to receive and wind a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position;
- the first and second paths being disposed on opposite sides of a plane passing through said axis and so disposed that at least one chuck moving towards said winding position thereof is positioned to intercept a length of thread extending from said friction drive member to the package on the other chuck moving away from said winding position thereof.
- 23. A method of winding thread onto a series of bobbins, said method comprising the steps of:
- moving a first rotatable chuck along a first path from a first rest position to a winding position to be driven by a friction drive member to receive and wind a thread thereabout;
- forming a package of thread about the chuck while returning the first chuck towards said first rest position along said first path;
- thereafter moving the chuck with the package of thread thereon along said first path towards said first rest position while extending a length of thread from the friction drive member to the package;
- moving a second rotatable chuck along a second path from a second rest position to a winding position to intercept the length of the thread extending to the first rotatable chuck; and
- thereafter forming a package of thread about the second chuck.
- 24. A method of winding thread onto a series of bobbins, said method comprising the steps of:
- moving a first rotatable chuck along a first path from a first rest position to a winding position to be driven by a friction drive member to receive and wind a thread thereabout;
- forming a package of thread about the chuck while returning the first chuck towards said first rest position along said first path;
- thereafter moving the chuck with the package of thread thereon along said first path towards said first rest position while extending a free length of thread directly from the roller to the package;
- moving a second rotatable chuck along a second path from a second rest position to a winding position to intercept the free length of the thread extending to the first rotatable chuck; and
- thereafter forming a packing of thread about the second chuck.
- 25. A winder for thread comprising:
- a roller rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread and having a zone of limited extent for delivering the thread therefrom;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position while the thread package contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path convergent with said first path towards said zone from a second rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said rest position while the thread package on said second chuck contacts said roller during winding of said package; and
- said first and second rest positions being disposed on opposite sides of a plane passing through said axis and said zone on said roller and said winding positions being disposed inwardly of said rest positions relative to said plane.
- 26. A winder as set forth in claim 25 wherein said plane is horizontal.
- 27. A winder as set forth in claim 26 wherein each chuck has a longitudinal axis disposed in or near said horizontal plane in said winding position thereof.
- 28. A winder as set forth in claim 25 wherein said roller receives a travelling thread over a wrap angle of from 150.degree. to 211.degree..
- 29. A winder as set forth in claim 25 wherein said roller receives a travelling thread over a minimum wrap angle of 150.degree. during winding of a thread on a respective chuck.
- 30. A winder as set forth in claim 25 wherein at least one chuck has a thread catcher means positioned to intercept a length of thread extending from said roller to a thread package on the other chuck moving from said winding position thereof.
- 31. A winder as set forth in claim 25 wherein each chuck is adapted to releasably support at least one bobbin and wherein each bobbin has a part positioned to intercept a length of thread extending from said roller to a thread package on a chuck moving from said winding position thereof.
- 32. A winder as set forth in claim 25 wherein said roller is a friction drive member for driving said respective chucks.
- 33. A winder for thread comprising:
- a roller rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread over a minimum wrap angle of 150.degree. during winding and having a zone for delivering the thread therefrom;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position while the thread package contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position while the thread package on said second chuck contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- said first and second rest positions being disposed on opposite sides of a plane passing through said axis and said zone on said roller whereby said paths converge towards said zone;
- guide means mounted for movement into a position between said roller and said first chuck to limit an increase in said wrap angle caused during movement of said first chuck with a package thereon away from said roller and towards said first rest position; and
- means to limit a reduction in said wrap angle caused during movement of said second chuck with a package thereon away from said roller and towards said second rest position.
- 34. A winder for thread comprising:
- a roller rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof for receiving a travelling thread and having a zone for delivering the thread therefrom;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position while the thread package contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said second path to return to said second rest position while the thread package on said second chuck contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- said first and second rest positions being disposed on opposite sides of a plane passing through said axis and said zone on said roller whereby said paths converge towards said zone; and
- means for compensating an increasing contact pressure of a package on said roller produced by winding of a thread package on said first chuck to maintain a predetermined contact pressure on said roller.
- 35. A winder for thread comprising:
- a roller for receiving a travelling thread and having a zone for delivering the thread therefrom;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position while the thread package contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said path to return to said rest position while the thread package on said second chuck contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- said first and second rest positions being disposed on opposite sides of a plane passing through said axis and said zone on said roller whereby said paths converge towards said zone;
- a first swing arm having said first chuck mounted thereon for movement in a curvilinear path and being pivotal about a first pivot axis disposed on an opposite side of said roller from said one chuck; and
- a second swing arm having said second chuck mounted thereon for movement in a curvilinear path and being pivotal about a second pivot axis disposed on an opposite side of said roller from said second chuck.
- 36. A winder as set forth in claim 35 wherein said first pivot axis is above said roller and said second pivot axis is below said roller.
- 37. A winder for thread comprising:
- a roller for receiving a travelling thread and having a zone for delivering the thread therefrom;
- a first rotatable chuck movable along a first path from a first rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said first path to return to said rest position while the thread package contacts said roller during winding of said package;
- a second rotatable chuck movable along a second path from a second rest position spaced from said roller to a winding position adjacent said roller to receive and wind a thread from said zone of said roller into a thread package thereabout and movable along said path to return to said rest position while the thread package on said second chuck contacts said roller during winding of said package; and
- said first and second rest positions being disposed on opposite sides of a plane passing through said axis and said zone on said roller with said paths converging towards said zone and wherein the thread package on said first chuck contacts said roller at a first point which moves away from an initial point of contact toward an outer limit of said zone and the thread package on said second chuck contacts said roller at a second point which moves opposite to the movement of said first point.
