Claims
- 1. A filter defining an upstream side and a downstream side thereof, the filter comprising:
- a stack of cooperating filter units defining an axial interior volume and a plurality of pairs of cooperating surfaces, each filter unit having a generally disc-like configuration, each pair of cooperating surfaces comprising first and second cooperating surfaces, at least the first cooperating surface of at least some of the pairs of cooperating surfaces being a fingered surface having defined thereupon a plurality of fingers arranged in registration with the corresponding second cooperation surface,
- wherein the exterior of the fingers is in fluid communication with an individual one of the upstream or downstream side of the filter and the interior of the fingers is in fluid communication with the other one of the upstream or downstream side of the filter,
- wherein at least one of the fingered surfaces has formed thereupon first and second spaced protruding line portions defined generally along the sides of at least some of the fingers, the first and second protruding line portions protruding relative to a generally planar portion of the filter unit defined interiorly of a corresponding finger, the first and second protruding line portions along both sides of each finger being connected adjacent the top of the finger, the space between the first and second protruding line portions along both sides of each finger defining an interior of the finger, at least some pairs of adjacent fingers being generally separate apart from the first and second protruding line portions of the adjacent finger which are connected adjacent the bases of the adjacent fingers, the interface of each pair of first and second protruding line portions with the second surface defining a chamber associated with the interior of the finger,
- the plurality of pairs of protruding line portions defined along the sides of the plurality of fingers together defining a generally continuous protruding line portion for separating the upstream side from the downstream side,
- wherein at least some of the interface between at least some of the pairs of cooperating surfaces is configured so as to define a plurality of passages for preventing passage of particles of at least a predetermined size from the upstream side to the downstream side and for allowing flow of fluid from the upstream side to the downstream side.
- 2. A filter according to claim 1 wherein at least some of the interface between at least some of the pairs of cooperating surfaces is configured so as to define first and second interspersed pluralities of elongate elements, the first plurality of elongate elements lying generally along a first, relatively elevated plane and the second plurality of elongate elements lying generally along a second, relatively depressed plane, the first and second interspersed pluralities of elongate elements defining the plurality of passages.
- 3. A filter according to claim 2 wherein at least some of the interface between at least some of the pairs of cooperating surfaces is configured so as to define a plurality of grooves, the plurality of grooves defining the first and second interspersed pluralities of elongate elements.
- 4. A filter according to claim 3 wherein the second cooperating surface of at least some of the pairs of cooperating surfaces has formed thereupon a generally continuous protruding line portion.
- 5. A filter according to claim 4 wherein first and second interspersed pluralities of elongate elements are defined in associate with both generally continuous protruding line portions formed upon both members of at least some of the pairs of cooperating filter units.
- 6. A filter according to claim 3 wherein the first and the second cooperating surfaces of at least some of the pairs of cooperating surfaces are each a fingered surface having defined thereupon a plurality of fingers, each plurality of fingers having a plurality of pairs of protruding line portions defined along the sides of the fingers, the plurality of pairs of protruding lines portions defining a generally continuous protruding line portion for separating the upstream side from the downstream side,
- the generally continuous protruding line portion of the first cooperating surface being aligned relative to the generally continuous protruding line portion of the second cooperating surface.
- 7. A filter according to claim 6 wherein grooves are defined on both generally continuous protruding line portions formed upon both members of at least some of the pairs of cooperating filter units, the grooves on the generally continuous protruding line portion of the first cooperating surface being skewed relative to the grooves on the generally continuous protruding line portion of the second cooperating surface.
- 8. A filter according to claim 3 wherein first and second interspersed pluralities of elongate elements are defined in association with both members of at least some of the pairs of cooperating filter units.
- 9. A filter according to claim 1 and also comprising means for providing a fluid jet through the stack of cooperating filter units which is disposed interiorly of the axial interior volume and comprising a fluid discharge device including at least one fluid outlet such as a nozzle.
- 10. A filter according to claim 9 wherein the fluid discharge is arranged for axial movement within the axial interior volume.
- 11. A filter according to claim 9 and also comprising fluid driven means for providing rotation of the fluid jet about the axis of the stack.
- 12. A filter according to claim 9 wherein the fluid discharge device is arranged relative to the chambers so as to allow the fluid jet to penetrate the chambers, thereby to detach the particles form the filter stack.
- 13. A filter according to claim 9 wherein the means for providing a fluid jet comprises an elongate hollow element fixedly associated with the fluid discharge device for supplying backflushing fluid thereto and for transmitting axial movement imparted to the elongate hollow element to the fluid discharge device.
- 14. A filter according to claim 1 wherein the stack of cooperating filter units is supported by a plurality of connecting elements disposed generally parallel to the axis of the filter stack.
- 15. A filter according to claim 14 wherein the stack of cooperating filter units is supported by a plurality of connecting elements disposed generally parallel to the axis of the filter stack for arranging each first cooperating surface in closely adjacent registration with the corresponding second cooperating surface in order to tighten the filter stack, and also connected to a rigid disk in each end of the stack.
- 16. A filter according to claim 14 wherein each filter unit is generally annular, thereby defining cylindrical interior volume of the stack of filter units and also comprising a plurality of axial connecting elements which traverse said stack of filter units at locations intermediate the diameter of the stack and the diameter of the cylindrical interior volume.
- 17. A filter according to claim to claim 1 and also comprising particle detaching means for detaching particles from the stack of cooperating filter units which is disposed interiorly of the axial interior volume and which is arranged for axial and rotational motion relative to the axis of the filter stack.
- 18. A filter according to claim 17 and also comprising stabilizing means for stabilizing the particle detaching means, the stabilizing means being disposed interiorly of the axial interior volume and being configured so as to derive support from the portion of the filter stack facing the axial interior volume.
- 19. A filter according to claim 17 and also comprising a fluid discharge device for supplying backflushing fluid, provided with at least one tangetial fluid outlet such as a nozzle so as to rotate the fluid jet impinging to the filter stack from the downstream side to the upstream side.
- 20. A filter according to claim 17 and also comprising a fluid discharge device for supplying backflushing fluid provided with at least one tangential fluid outlet such as a nozzle and at least one radial fluid outlet such as a nozzle.
- 21. A filter according to claim 1 and also comprising a housing defining a filter surrounding volume disposed interiorly of the housing and surrounding the filter, the housing having an inlet communicating with the upstream side and an outlet communicating with the downstream side, the axial interior volume communicating with one of the upstream and downstream sides and the filter surrounding volume communicating with the other one of the upstream and downstream sides.
- 22. A filter according to claim 21 and also comprising a manifold defining an inlet and outlet in communication with the bottom of said housing, said manifold provides the non-filtered fluid inlet, drain and filtered fluid outlet through a single aperture in said housing.
- 23. A filter according to claim 1 wherein the exteriors of the fingers communicate with the upstream side and the interiors of the fingers communicate with the downstream side.
- 24. A filter according to claim 1 wherein the exteriors of the fingers communicate with the downstream side and the interiors of the fingers communicate with the upstream side.
- 25. A filter unit comprising:
- first and second surfaces defining a plurality of fingers, spaces being defined in association with said fingers defined by said first and second surfaces such that when a plurality of filter units are disposed in registration, said spaces define upstream channels for accumulating particles or filter cake and for facilitating disengagement of the particles or filter cake from the upstream surface of the filter,
- wherein each of the first and second surfaces has formed thereupon a plurality of pairs of first and second spaced protruding line portions defined generally along the sides of at least some of the fingers, the first and second protruding line portions protruding relative to a generally planar portion of the filter unit defined interiorly of a corresponding finger, the first and second protruding line portions along both sides of each finger being connected adjacent the top of the finger, the space between the first and second protruding line portions along both sides of each finger defining an interior of the finger, the first and second protruding line portions of the adjacent fingers being connected adjacent the bases of the adjacent fingers,
- the plurality of pairs of protruding line portions defined along the sides of the plurality of fingers together defining a generally continuous protruding line portion.
- 26. A filter unit according to claim 25 wherein a plurality of grooves is defined on at least a portion of the generally continuous protruding line portion on the first surface.
- 27. A filter unit according to claim 26 wherein a plurality of grooves is defined on at least a portion of the generally continuous protruding line portion on the second surface.
- 28. A filter according to claim 1 wherein the bases of the fingers within each plurality of fingers are connected by an annular generally planar member, the bases of the fingers protruding relative to the plane of the annular generally planar member, the bases of the fingers protruding relative to the plane of the annular generally planar member, each annular generally planar member defining a hollow interior, the hollow interiors of the annular generally planar members together defining the axial interior volume of the stack of cooperating filter units.
- 29. A filter according to claim 28 wherein a plurality of generally radially defined protruding line segments are defined on the annular generally planar member, the protruding line segments being disposed between adjacent fingers and being a continuation of the protruding line portion and being operative to focus a pressurized stream of fluid toward a corresponding chamber.
- 30. A filter according to claim 1 wherein a planar divider is provided interiorly of each finger, such that when a plurality of filter units are disposed in registration, said line portions and said planar dividers define a multiplicity of chambers.
- 31. A filter according to claim 1 wherein each chamber is operative to allow filtered fluid to enter the axial interior volume and to allow pressurized stream of back-flushing fluid to detach particles from the stack of cooperating filter units.
- 32. A filter according to claim 1 wherein each chamber is configured so as to allow particles to be sucked from the stack of cooperating filter units.
- 33. A filter according to claim 1 wherein an opening of each chamber is defined adjacent the base of a corresponding finger and the opening faces the axial interior volume.
- 34. A filter according to claim 1 wherein an opening of each chamber is defined adjacent the base of a corresponding finger and the opening faces exterior of the stack.
- 35. A filter according to claim 1 and also comprising means for detaching particles from the stack of cooperating filter units which is disposed interiorly of the axial interior volume and which comprises means for sucking in the particles.
- 36. A filter according to claim 1 and wherein said plurality of fingers narrow as they extend outwardly.
- 37. A filter disk unit having on its outer perimeter a plurality of finger like configuration
- wherein at least one of the fingered surfaces has formed thereupon first and second spaced protruding line portions defined generally along the sides of at least some of the fingers, the first and second protruding line portions protruding relative to a generally planar portion of the filter unit defined interiorly of a corresponding finger, the first and second protruding line portions along both sides of each finger being connected adjacent the top of the finger, the space between the first and second protruding line portions along both sides of each finger defining an interior of the finger, at least some pairs of adjacent fingers being generally separate apart from the first and second protruding line portions of the adjacent fingers which are connected adjacent the bases of the adjacent fingers,
- the plurality of pairs of protruding line portions defined along the sides of the plurality of fingers together defining a generally continuous protruding line portion for separating the upstream side from the downstream side,
- wherein a plurality of spaced grooves is defined on the surface of at least one side of the disk,
- wherein the bases of said fingers are connected to a supporting ring recessed with respect of said protruding line portion.
