Claims
- 1. A fuel filter comprising:
- a casing having a cylindrical peripheral wall and first and second fuel ports to define a fuel flow path through said filter unit,
- a filter medium extending in a loop within said casing and separating a central fuel chamber from a peripheral fuel chamber, said peripheral fuel chamber disposed directly between said filter medium and said casing, said filter medium disposed intermediate said first and second fuel ports in said fuel flow path,
- a peripheral contaminant outlet,
- a plurality of ribs forming contaminant channels in fluid communication with said contaminant outlet and operable to allow contaminants to directly exit from said peripheral fuel chamber,
- an end cap disposed below said filter medium, said contaminant channels extending inwardly below said end cap, and
- an annular threaded portion distinct from and disposed below said end cap and having said ribs thereon and operable to engage mating threads of a contaminant collection bowl.
- 2. The filter of claim 1 wherein said ribs and said annular threaded portion are integral parts of a connector ring disposed below said end cap.
- 3. The filter of claim 2 wherein said ribs extend outwardly from said annular threaded portion into engagement with said casing.
- 4. The filter of claim 2 wherein said connector ring further comprises an integral annular ring between said annular threaded portion and said ribs, said annular ring being supported on the turned-in lower end of said casing and forming a lower surface defining said contaminant channels.
- 5. The filter of claim 4 wherein said contaminant channels are further defined by adjacent ones of said ribs and said lower end cap.
- 6. The filter of claim 5 wherein said ribs are radially disposed and form radial contaminant channels.
- 7. The filter of claim 6 wherein said ribs extend outwardly into engagement with said casing and form a plurality of peripheral contaminant outlets operable to allow contaminants to directly exit from said peripheral fuel chamber by way of said corresponding plurality of contaminant channels.
- 8. The filter of claim 7 further comprising axial projections at the outer ends of said ribs forming a radial spacer for said filter medium, said ribs forming axial spacing means.
- 9. The filter of claim 2 further comprising a contaminant collection bowl removably attached to said filter unit, said collection bowl comprising a bottom wall and cylindrical side wall, said side wall having threads thereon adapted for engagement with said annular threaded portion of said fuel filter, and means providing a fluid tight seal between said collection bowl and said fuel filter.
- 10. The filter of claim 9 wherein said fluid seal between said collection bowl and said filter is resealable so that said collection bowl may be removed and attached to said fuel filter in fluid tight engagement.
- 11. The filter of claim 10 wherein said fluid seal is disposed outside of said threads on said side wall of said collection bowl.
- 12. The filter of claim 11 wherein said fluid seal is an annular ring seal in engagement with said filter casing.
- 13. The filter of claim 12 wherein said collection bowl further comprises a peripheral flange having an annular groove therein, said fluid seal being disposed in said groove and in engagement with said turned-in end of said casing.
