Claims
- 1. A filter for use in a disk drive system, comprising:
- a base layer comprising a multi-layer structure including a support layer, an efficiency membrane covering the support layer, and an adsorptive material holding layer covering the efficiency membrane, wherein the adsorptive material holding layer includes an adsorptive material receiving surface constructed for receiving and holding an adsorptive material;
- an adsorptive layer comprising an adsorptive material deposited by screen printing on the adsorptive material receiving surface of the adsorptive material holding layer in a discrete pattern to form an active-filtering and adsorbing media area, wherein the adsorptive layer does not include a binder or latex for holding the adsorptive material together; and
- a cover layer comprising a permeable fabric welded to the adsorptive material holding layer and enclosing the adsorptive material, wherein the filter has a Frazier permeability of at least 0.3 cubic feet per minute per square foot at one-half inch water pressure drop.
- 2. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the adsorptive material comprises activated carbon.
- 3. A filter according to claim 2, wherein the activated carbon is impregnated with a solution selected from the group of water soluble carbonate, bisulfite, sulfate and hydroxide salts.
- 4. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the adsorptive material comprises an acid removal agent selected from the group of low molecular weight amines and polymeric amines.
- 5. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the adsorptive material further comprises organic or inorganic halides.
- 6. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the adsorptive material further comprises sulfate salts.
- 7. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the adsorptive material is impregnated with 2,4 dinitrophenylhydrazine.
- 8. A filter according to claim 1, wherein one of the base layer and the cover layer comprises a protective nonwoven layer and a HEPA membrane.
- 9. A filter according to claim 2, wherein the adsorptive material retains an adsorptive surface area capacity of at least 80% of the activated carbon material.
- 10. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the support layer comprises a polymeric open screen.
- 11. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the support layer comprises a woven material.
- 12. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the efficiency membrane is a HEPA membrane.
- 13. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the efficiency membrane is a ULPA membrane.
- 14. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the adsorptive material holding layer comprises a permeable fabric.
- 15. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the adsorptive material comprises an adsorptive material selected from the group of activated carbon, activated alumina, molecular sieves, ion exchange resins, functional resins and polymers, diatomaceous earths, silica, and clays.
- 16. A filter according to claim 1, further comprising an annular adhesive layer covering the cover layer.
- 17. A filter according to claim 15, wherein the adsorptive material comprises a catalytic material selected from the group of copper, nickel, oxides of manganese, oxides of copper, and oxides of nickel.
- 18. A filter for use in a disk drive system, comprising:
- a base layer comprising a multi-layer structure including a support layer, an efficiency membrane covering the support layer, and an adsorptive material holding layer covering the efficiency membrane, wherein the adsorptive material holding layer includes an adsorptive material receiving surface constructed for receiving and holding an adsorptive material;
- an adsorptive layer comprising an adsorptive material deposited by screen printing on the adsorptive material receiving surface of the adsorptive material holding layer in a discrete pattern to form an active-filtering and adsorbing media area, wherein the adsorptive layer does not include a binder or latex for holding the adsorptive material together; and
- a cover layer comprising a permeable fabric welded to the adsorptive material holding layer and enclosing the adsorptive material, wherein the filter has a Frazier permeability of at least 0.3 cubic feet per minute per square foot at one-half inch water pressure drop, and wherein the filter being manufactured by a process comprising steps of:
- (a) positioning the base layer proximate a screen member;
- (b) depositing the adsorptive material through the screen member onto the adsorptive material receiving surface of the adsorptive material holding layer;
- (c) applying an adhesive onto the base layer;
- (d) applying the cover layer over the adsorptive material; and
- (e) welding the cover layer to the adsorptive material holding layer.
- 19. A according to claim 18, further comprising an annular adhesive layer covering the cover layer.
- 20. A filter according to claim 18, wherein the base layer comprises a protective nonwoven layer and a HEPA membrane.
- 21. A filter according to claim 18, wherein the adsorptive material comprises activated carbon.
- 22. A filter according to claim 18, wherein the adsorptive material is deposited in the form of a wetted slurry.
- 23. A filter according to claim 18, wherein the adsorptive material deposited through the screen member consists essentially of activated carbon and water.
