Claims
- 1. A respiratory or ventilator filter device, comprising:
- a filter housing having a proximal end and a distal end, said filter housing containing a first filter chamber and a second filter chamber, the first filter chamber not being in fluid communication with the second filter chamber;
- filter means in said first and second filter chambers;
- a proximal inner conduit and a proximal outer conduit at said proximal end of said filter housing, said proximal outer conduit surrounding said proximal inner conduit to form a proximal expiratory or inspiratory inner fluid path within the interior of said proximal inner conduit and a proximal outer expiratory or inspiratory fluid path in the region between the exterior of said proximal inner conduit and the interior of said proximal outer conduit;
- a distal inner conduit and a distal outer conduit at said distal end of said filter housing, said distal outer conduit surrounding said distal inner conduit to form a distal expiratory or inspiratory inner fluid path within the interior of said distal inner conduit and a distal outer expiratory or inspiratory fluid path in the region between the exterior of said distal inner conduit and the interior of said distal outer conduit;
- said first filter chamber being in fluid communication with said proximal inner fluid path and said distal inner fluid path; and
- said second filter chamber being in fluid communication with said proximal outer fluid path and said distal outer fluid path.
- 2. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said proximal outer conduit and said proximal inner conduit form a proximal connector for a unilimb breathing apparatus.
- 3. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said distal outer conduit and said distal inner conduit form a distal connector for a unilimb breathing apparatus.
- 4. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said proximal inner fluid path is operably connected to a source of inspiratory gas and said distal outer fluid path is operably connected to an expiratory port.
- 5. The filter device of claim 4, wherein said distal inner and outer conduits are operably connected to a mammal whereby inspiratory gas from said source of inspiratory gas passes through said proximal inner fluid path, said filter means in said first filter chamber, and said distal inner fluid path to be delivered to said mammal, and expiratory gas from said mammal passes through said distal outer fluid path, said filter means in said second filter chamber, and said proximal outer fluid path to said expiratory port.
- 6. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said distal outer and inner conduits are coaxial, and said proximal outer and inner conduits are coaxial.
- 7. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said filter means comprises a first filter element in said first filter chamber and a second filter element in said second filter chamber.
- 8. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said filter means comprises a single filter element extending across said first and second filter chambers.
- 9. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said first filter chamber has a distal cross-sectional area in the region of said distal inner fluid path, a filter region cross-sectional area in the region of said filter means, and a proximal cross-sectional area in the region of said proximal inner fluid path; said filter region cross-sectional area being greater than said distal cross-sectional area and said proximal cross-sectional area.
- 10. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said second filter chamber has a distal cross-sectional area in the region of said distal outer fluid path, a filter region cross-sectional area in the region of said filter means, and a proximal cross-sectional area in the region of said proximal outer fluid path; said filter region cross-sectional area being greater than said distal cross-sectional area and said proximal cross-sectional area.
- 11. The filter device of claim 1, wherein said filter housing includes an exterior wall and at least one interior wall preventing said first filter chamber from being in fluid communuication with said second filter chamber.
- 12. The filter device of claim 1, wherein the distal end of said distal outer conduit and the proximal end of said proximal outer conduit include an outer fastening means.
- 13. The filter device of claim 12, wherein the distal end of said distal inner conduit and the proximal end of said proximal inner conduit include an inner fastening means.
