Claims
- 1. A filtering apparatus comprising:
- a housing defining a filter chamber;
- a rigid partition extending through said chamber and subdividing same into an upstream compartment and a downstream compartment communicating with said upstream compartment via throughgoing openings formed in said partition;
- a support fabric overlying said partition and permeable to a fluid, said support fabric lying along a side of said partition turned toward said upstream compartment;
- means including a closable inlet opening communicating with said upstream compartment and a closable outlet opening communicating with said downstream compartment for passing through said chamber from said upstream compartment to said downstream compartment a carrier medium entraining a particulate filter-aid layer onto said fabric in said upstream compartment;
- means including a closable inlet opening communicating with said upstream compartment and a closable outlet opening communicating with said downstream compartment for passing a filterable medium through said chamber from said upstream compartment to said downstream compartment whereby said filterable medium traverses said layer and said fabric;
- washing means including a closable inlet opening connectable with said chamber on the downstream side of said fabric and a closable outlet opening communicating with said upstream compartment at an upstream side of said fabric for passing a washing medium through said chamber from said inlet to said outlet opening and thereby backwashing said layer from said fabric and entraining material of said layer out of said chamber through said outlet opening;
- means to close each of said inlet and outlet openings; and
- displacement means for downstream removing media residues completely from each of said compartments.
- 2. The filter apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said means for passing said carrier medium through said chamber and said means for passing said filterable medium through said chamber each include a closable inlet opening communicating with said upstream compartment at least when said carrier medium is different from said filterable medium.
- 3. The filter apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said means for passing said carrier medium through said chamber and said means for passing said filterable medium through said chamber each include a closable outlet opening communicating with said downstream chamber when said carrier medium is different from the pure filtrate.
- 4. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein the washing means includes two closable inlet openings, each communicating with the respective side of said fabric, the inlet opening of said washing means communicating with said upstream side of said fabric being arranged at one side and the outlet opening of said washing means at an opposite side of said upstream compartment.
- 5. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 4 wherein said washing medium is a mixture of water and air with the water being introduced from said inlet opening on the downstream side of said fabric and air being introduced through said inlet opening at the upstream side of said fabric.
- 6. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 4 wherein said inlet opening and said outlet opening each communicating with said upstream compartment and forming part of said washing means are each provided with a respective sealing lip adapted to be urged by fluid pressure into flow-blocking relationship.
- 7. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 6 further comprising fluid controlled means for selectively blocking said openings.
- 8. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 4 wherein said inlet opening communicating with said downstream compartment is formed as a plurality of slits or channels in said partition below said fabric.
- 9. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said inlet opening for said washing means communicating with said downstream side of said fabric opens into said downstream compartment.
- 10. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said rigid partition is of planar configuration.
- 11. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said means for removing media residues from said chamber includes a respective movable wall flanking each side of said partition and respectively defining said upstream and downstream compartments, said wall defining said downstream compartment being sealably engageable with said partition to block the throughgoing opening therein.
- 12. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 11 wherein said partition is formed with at least one grate and said wall of said downstream compartment includes rises aligned with said throughgoing openings and receivable therein to completely fill said throughgoing openings.
- 13. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 12 wherein said rises are formed on a displacement plate carried by said wall of said downstream compartment.
- 14. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 12 wherein said rises and said throughgoing openings converge toward said upstream compartment.
- 15. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 11 wherein said partition is formed by a fixed central bar and a respective bar of grates replaceably engaging each side of said fixed central bar, said support fabric overlying said bars of grates only.
- 16. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 15 wherein said central bar is formed with at least some of said openings for the means for passing said media through said chamber substantially at the center of said bar.
- 17. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 16 wherein said bar is provided with tubes communicating with said openings and each tube at a central region of each bar is sealingly connected therewith at the respective opening.
- 18. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 16 wherein said openings at the central region of said bar are juxtaposed with sealing surfaces of said movable walls and are closable thereby.
- 19. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 18 wherein each of the openings on said bar is juxtaposed with a displacement body carried by the respective movable wall.
- 20. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 16 wherein said inlet openings for the means for passing said carrier and filterable media through said chamber open at the upstream side of said fixed central bar.
- 21. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 16 wherein said inlet opening for the washing means communicating with said downstream side of said fabric and said outlet opening for said filterable medium communicating with said downstream compartment open at the downstream side of said fixed central bar.
- 22. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 11 wherein said movable wall defining said upstream compartment is provided with respective inlet openings forming part of the means for passing said carrier medium through said chamber.
- 23. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 22 wherein said inlet openings of said movable wall defining said upstream compartment are disposed generally at a central region thereof.
- 24. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 11 wherein an outlet opening forming part of the means for passing said filterable medium through said chamber is provided in said wall defining said downstream compartment.
- 25. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 24 wherein said outlet opening in said wall of said downstream chamber is disposed at a location thereof sealingly engageable by said partition upon advance of said walls toward said partition.
- 26. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 25 wherein said partition is formed with a bar engageable with said wall of said downstream chamber to block said outlet opening therein.
- 27. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 11, further comprising means for moving said movable walls are adapted to be urged by fluid pressure.
- 28. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said compartments are rectangular.
- 29. A filtering apparatus comprising:
- a housing defining a filter chamber;
- a rigid partition extending through said chamber and subdividing same into an upstream compartment and a downstream compartment communicating with said upstream compartment via throughgoing openings formed in said partition;
- a support fabric overlying said partition and permeable to a fluid, said support fabric lying along a side of said partition turned toward said upstream compartment;
- means for passing through said chamber from said upstream compartment to said downstream compartment a carrier medium entraining a particulate filter-aid layer onto said fabric in said upstream compartment;
- means for passing a filterable medium through said chamber from said upstream compartment to said downstream compartment whereby said filterable medium traverses said layer and said fabric;
- washing means including an inlet opening connectable with said chamber on the downstream side of said fabric and an outlet opening communicating with said upstream compartment at an upstream side of said fabric for passing a washing medium through said chamber from said inlet to said outlet opening and thereby backwashing said layer out of said fabric and entraining material of said layer out of said chamber through said outlet opening, the washing means including two closable inlet openings and means to close each of said inlet openings, each of said inlet openings communicating with a respective one of said compartments at one lateral edge thereof, said outlet opening communicating with said upstream compartment at a location spaced from said lateral edge of across a width of the fabric, said means for passing said carrier medium through said chamber and said means for passing said filterable medium through said chamber each including a closable outlet opening communicating with said downstream chamber; and
- a respective movable wall flanking each side of said partition and defining the respective compartment with said fabric, the side of said partiion facing the wall defining said downstream compartment being free from a support fabric and said wall defining said downstream compartment being sealably engageable with said partition to block the throughgoing opening therein.
- 30. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 29 wherein said partition is formed with at least one grate and said wall defining said downstream compartment includes rises aligned with said throughgoing openings and receivable therein to completely fill said throughgoing openings.
- 31. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 30 wherein said rises are formed on a displacement plate carried by said wall defining said downstream compartment.
- 32. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 30 wherein said rises and said throughgoing openings converge toward said upstream compartment.
- 33. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 30 wherein said partition is formed by a fixed central bar and a bar of grates replaceably engaging said fixed central bar.
- 34. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 33 wherein said central bar is formed with at least some of said openings for the means for passing said carrier and filterable media through said compartment substantially at the center of said bar.
- 35. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 34 wherein said bar is provided with tubes communicating with said openings and each tube at a central region of each bar is sealingly connected therewith at the respective opening.
- 36. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 34 wherein said openings at the central region of said bar are juxtaposed with sealing surfaces of said movable walls and are closable thereby.
- 37. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 36 wherein each of the openings on said bar is juxtaposed with a displacement body carried by the respective movable wall.
- 38. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 31 wherein said washing medium is a mixture of water and air with the air being introduced from an inlet opening on the downstream side of said fabric and water being introduced through an inlet opening at the upstream side of said fabric.
- 39. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 29 wherein said inlet opening and said outlet opening are each provided with a respective sealing lip adapted to be urged by fluid pressure into the flow-blocking relationship.
- 40. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 39 further comprising fluid controlled means for selectively blocking said openings.
- 41. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 29 wherein said movable wall defining said upstream compartment is provided with respective inlet openings forming part of the means for passing said filterable medium through said chamber and the means for passing said carrier medium through said chamber.
- 42. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 41 wherein said inlet openings of said movable wall defining said upstream compartment are disposed generally at a central region thereof.
- 43. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 29 wherein an outlet opening forming part of the means for passing said filterable medium through said chamber is provided in said wall defining said downstream compartment.
- 44. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 43 wherein said outlet opening in said wall defining said downstream chamber is disposed at a location thereof sealingly engageable by said partition.
- 45. The filtering apparatus defined in claim 44 wherein said partition is formed with a bar engageable with said wall defining said downstream chamber to block said outlet opening therein.
