Claims
- 1. A fluid-permeable filter comprising an aggregate of particulate forms of at least one normally-solid, microporous, oriented olefin polymer having pendent, reactive or polar, side-groups along the polymer molecules, said side-groups being substantially reactable with a fluid reagent at a temperature below that at which thermal stress-relaxation of the oriented molecules is substantially encountered,
- said filter being positionable for passage of a fluid therethrough.
- 2. The filter of claim 1 in the form of a layer on a fluid-permeable support.
- 3. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises a composite of at least one fibrous form of the said microporous polymer(s) covering the exterior surface of a hollow, permeable, filter core.
- 4. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises a composite of at least one fibrous form of the said microporous polymer(s) covering the exterior surface of a hollow, permeable, filter core,
- said core being removeably positioned in a cannister which houses the polymer-covered filter core during passage of fluid therethrough.
- 5. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises a composite of at least one fibrous form of the said microporous polymer(s) covering the exterior surface of a hollow, permeable, filter core,
- said filter core being removeably positioned in a cannister which houses the polymer-covered filter core during passage of fluid therethrough,
- said cannister comprising a compartment into which the polymer-covered filter core is operably postioned as the filter component, with means for closing said cannister, means for ingress of fluid into the cannister for passage through the filter, and means for egress of fluid from the cannister after passage through the filter.
- 6. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises a composite of at least one fibrous form of the said microporous polymer(s) supported by a fluid-permeable substrate.
- 7. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises at least one fibrous form of the said microporous polymer(s) in woven form.
- 8. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises at least one fibrous form of the said microporous polymer(s) in non-woven form.
- 9. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises at least one form of the said microporous polymer(s) as an integral, bonded form.
- 10. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises particles of the said microporous polymer(s) in contiguous aggregrate form.
- 11. The filter of claim 1 wherein the reactive side-groups comprise at least one selected from the group comprising carboxylic acid groups, amide groups, nitrile groups, ester groups, phosphonate groups, thioester groups, carboxyl groups, sodium carboxylate, potassium carboxylate, lithium carboxylate, or ammonium carboxylate.
- 12. The filter of claim 1 wherein the olefin polymer is one wherein the polymer backbone is comprised predominantly of polymerized ethylene units and the reactive side-groups contain --COO.sup.- moieties.
- 13. The filter of claim 1 wherein the olefin polymer is one wherein the polymer backbone is comprised predominantly of polymerized ethylene units and the reactive side-groups contain the --COOH moieties of at least one alpha-beta ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having from 3-10 carbon atoms in the molecule.
- 14. The filter of claim 1 wherein the olefin polymer is one wherein the polymer backbone is comprised predominantly of polymerized ethylene units and the reactive side-groups contain the --COOH moieties of at least one acid selected from the groups comprising acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, itaconic acid, fumaric acid, 1-pentenoic acid, chloroacrylic acid.
- 15. The filter of claim 1 wherein the fluid reagent is at least one compound comprising fluid forms of an alkaline material which has cation moieties and anion moieties and which reacts with reactive side-groups whereby at least a portion of said side-groups are esterified or saponified, thereby splitting off cation moieties from said side-groups and replacing them with cation moieties from said reagent.
- 16. The filter of claim 1 wherein the said side-groups are --COOH groups and the reagent is MOH, where M is a metal or NH.sub.4.
- 17. The filter of claim 1 wherein the said side-groups are ester groups and the reagent is a hydrolyzing agent.
- 18. The filter of claim 1 comprising aggregate configurations composed essentially of particles, fibers, strands, filaments, wafers, hollow fibers, ribbons, mats, or sheets of said polymer(s) or combinations of these.
- 19. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise fibers, filaments, strands, or ribbons.
- 20. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise hollow fibers wherein the microporosity is substantially throughout the walls of the fibers.
- 21. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise small wafers having microporosity.
- 22. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise fine denier fibers or filaments.
- 23. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise staple fibers.
- 24. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise bundles of fibers or multi-filaments.
- 25. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise wafers each having a central opening and having microporosity in the remainder of the wafer.
- 26. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise yarns.
- 27. The filter of claim 18 wherein the configurations comprise fibers, filaments, yarns, staple fibers, multi-filaments, or monofilaments which are fashioned into woven composites, braided composites, non-woven composites, knitted composites, sintered composites, or bonded composites.
- 28. The filter of claim 18 wherein the olefin polymer having reactive side-groups comprises an ethylene polymer having pendant carboxylic groups as the acid form, metal salt form, or ester form.
- 29. A fluid-permeable filter material comprising composited particles, threads, yarns, ribbons, fibers or filaments of a polymer,
- said polymer comprising an olefin polymer having pendant reactive or polar side-groups, and having microporosity.
- 30. The filter of claim 29 wherein the polymer comprises an ethylene polymer having pendant carboxylic groups as the acid form, metal salt form, or ester form.
- 31. The filter of claim 29 wherein the polymer comprises an ethylene polymer having pendant carboxylic groups which are in acid form when in contact with an acid and which are in salt form when in contact with an alkaline material.
