Claims
- 1. A filter construction comprising:
- (a) a first, most upstream, region of depth media having a percent solidity of no greater than about 2% and being constructed and arranged to remove at least about 60% by weight of particulates within the size range of about 1 microns to about 10 microns, carried by an airstream which passes into said filter construction during use;
- (b) a second region of depth media positioned downstream from said first region of depth media; said second region of depth media being constructed and arranged to entrap at least 60%, by weight, of any particulates within a size range of about 1 micron to about 10 micron, which pass through the first region of depth media during use; and,
- (c) an oiled pleated paper filter positioned downstream of said second region of depth media.
- 2. A filter construction according to claim 1 including a third region of depth media; said third region of depth media being positioned downstream from said oiled pleated paper filter.
- 3. A filter construction according to claim 1 wherein said first region of depth media occupies less than 70% of a total volume of depth media within said construction which is located upstream from said surface loading media construction.
- 4. A filter construction according to claim 1 wherein said second region of depth media has a percent solidity greater than a percent solidity of said first region of depth media.
- 5. A filter construction according to claim 1 wherein:
- (a) said first region of depth media comprises material having an average fiber size within a range of about 16 to 22 microns; and,
- (b) said second region of depth media comprises material having an average fiber size of less than about 18 microns.
- 6. A filter construction comprising:
- (a) first and second, opposite, end caps;
- (i) said first end cap having a central bore extending therethrough;
- (ii) said second end cap comprising a closed covering;
- (b) a cylindrical, porous, outer liner embedded in, and extending between, said first and second end caps;
- (c) a cylindrical, porous, inner liner embedded in, and extending between, said first and second end caps;
- (d) a region of pleated media positioned in extension between said first and second end caps and oriented between said inner and outer liners;
- (e) a plurality of filter stages positioned between said region of pleated media and said outer liner; said plurality of filter stages being positioned to extend between said first and second end caps; said plurality of filter stages including:
- (i) a first, outermost, region of fibrous depth media having a first average fiber diameter; said first, outermost, region of depth media being positioned adjacent said outer liner;
- (ii) a second region of fibrous depth media positioned immediately adjacent to said first region of fibrous media on an opposite side thereof from said outer liner; said second region of fibrous depth media having a smaller average fiber diameter than said first region of fibrous depth media;
- (iii) a third region of fibrous depth media positioned immediately adjacent to said second region of fibrous depth media, along an opposite side thereof from said outermost region of fibrous depth media; said third region of fibrous media having a smaller average fiber diameter than said first region of fibrous media.
- 7. A filter construction according to claim 6 wherein:
- (a) said region of pleated media comprises a cylindrical pleated paper construction having a pleat depth of at least 1/4 inch.
- 8. A filter construction according to claim 7 wherein:
- (a) said region of pleated media comprises pleated paper having synthetic fibers applied to a surface thereof; the applied synthetic fibers having an average fiber diameter of less than about 5 microns.
- 9. A filter construction according to claim 7 wherein:
- (a) said first, outermost, region of fibrous depth media comprises fibers having an average fiber diameter of at least 16 microns.
- 10. A filter construction according to claim 7 wherein:
- (a) said first, outermost, region of fibrous depth media comprises fibers having an average fiber diameter of at least 27 microns.
- 11. A filter construction according to claim 7 wherein:
- (a) said first outermost region of fibrous depth media comprises no more than about 50% of the depth media volume in said plurality of filter stages positioned between said pleated region and said outer liner.
- 12. A filter construction according to claim 7 wherein:
- (a) said first outermost region comprises fibrous depth media having an average percent solidity, within the construction, of no more than about 2%.
- 13. A filter construction according to claim 12 wherein:
- (a) said second region of depth media has an average percent solidity, within the construction, which is higher than the average percent solidity, within the construction, of the outermost region of fibrous depth media.
- 14. A filter construction according to claim 12 wherein:
- (a) said second region of depth media comprises no more than 50% of the volume of depth media in said plurality of filter stages positioned between said pleated region and said outer liner.
- 15. A filter construction according to claim 14 wherein:
- (a) said third region of depth media comprises no more than 50% of the volume of depth media in said plurality of filter stages positioned between said pleated region and said outer liner.
- 16. A filter construction according to claim 15 wherein:
- (a) said third region of depth media has an average percent solidity, within the construction, of greater than the average percent solidity, within the construction, of the outermost region of fibrous depth media.
- 17. A filter construction according to claim 16 wherein:
- (a) said third region of depth media has an average percent solidity, within the construction, of greater than the average percent solidity, within the construction, of the second region of fibrous depth media.
- 18. A filter construction according to claim 17 wherein:
- (a) said third region of fibrous depth media has an average fiber diameter of less than about 18 microns.
- 19. A filter construction according to claim 18 wherein:
- (a) said third region of fibrous depth media has an average fiber diameter of less than about 16 microns.
- 20. A filter construction according to claim 18 including:
- (a) an inner region of fibrous media positioned adjacent to said region of pleated media on an opposite side thereof from said plurality of filter stages.
- 21. A filter construction according to claim 20 wherein:
- (a) said inner region of fibrous depth media is positioned immediately adjacent to said inner liner.
- 22. A filter construction according to claim 16 wherein:
- (a) said first, outermost, region of fibrous depth media is constructed and arranged for collection therein of at least 60% by wt. of retained solids within the filter construction.
- 23. A filter construction comprising:
- (a) first and second, opposite, end caps;
- (i) said first end cap having a central bore extending therethrough;
- (ii) said second end cap comprising a closed covering;
- (b) a cylindrical, porous, metal, outer liner embedded in, and extending between, said first and second end caps;
- (c) a cylindrical, porous, metal, inner liner embedded in, and extending between, said first and second end caps;
- (d) a region of pleated media positioned in extension between said first and second end caps and oriented between said inner and outer liners;
- (i) said region of pleated media comprising a cylindrical pleated paper construction having a pleat depth of at least 1/4 inch;
- (e) a plurality of filter stages positioned between said region of pleated media and said outer liner; said plurality of filter stages further being positioned to extend between said first and second end caps; said plurality of stages including:
- (i) a first, outermost, region of fibrous depth media comprising polyester fibers having a first average fiber diameter;
- (A) said outermost region of depth media being positioned adjacent said outer liner;
- (B) said outermost region comprising fibrous depth media having an average percent solidity, within the construction, of no more than about 2%; and,
- (C) said outermost region of fibrous depth media comprising no more than about 50% of the depth media volume in said plurality of filter stages positioned between said pleated region and said outer liner;
- (ii) a second region of fibrous depth media positioned immediately adjacent to said first region of fibrous media and on an opposite side thereof from said outer liner; said second region of fibrous depth media comprising polyester fibers and having a smaller average fiber diameter than said first region of fibrous depth media;
- (A) said second region of depth media having an average percent solidity, within the construction, of less than about 3% but also greater than a percent solidity of the outermost region of fibrous depth media; and,
- (B) said second region of fibrous depth media comprising no more than 50% of the volume of depth media in said plurality of filter stages positioned between said pleated region and said outer liner; and,
- (iii) a third region of fibrous depth media positioned immediately adjacent to said second region of fibrous depth media, along an opposite side thereof from said outermost region of fibrous depth media;
- (A) said third region of fibrous media comprising polyester fibers;
- (B) said third region of fibrous media having an average fiber diameter of less than an average fiber diameter of said first, outermost, region;
- (C) said third region of depth media having an average percent solidity, within the construction, of greater than the average percent solidity of the outermost region of fibrous depth media; and,
- (D) said third region of fibrous depth media comprising no more than 50% of the volume of depth media in said plurality of filter stages positioned between said pleated region and said outer liner.
- 24. A filter construction according to claim 23 including:
- (a) an inner region of fibrous media positioned adjacent to said region of pleated media along an opposite side thereof from said plurality of filter stages;
- (i) said inner region of fibrous depth media being positioned immediately adjacent to said inner liner.
- 25. A filter construction according to claim 24 wherein:
- (a) said region as pleated media comprises pleated paper having synthetic fibers applied to a surface thereof; said applied synthetic fibers having an average fiber diameter of less than about 5 microns.
