Claims
- 1. A fine tape head positioning system in a tape cartridge drive back-up system for positioning a magnetic tape head, said system comprising:
- an elongated rotating lead screw providing rotational bi-directional movement,
- a follower nut threadingly engaging said elongated rotating lead screw,
- an elongated lever arm, said elongated lever arm having a first end engaging said follower nut to cause said follower nut to move upwardly or downwardly along said elongated rotating lead screw depending upon the direction said elongated rotating lead screw rotates and whereby said first end of said elongated lever arm moves upwardly and downwardly as said follower nut moves upwardly and downwardly,
- means connected to said elongated lever arm for pivoting said elongated lever arm at a first predetermined distance from said first end,
- a head mounting assembly, said head mounting assembly comprising:
- (a) said magnetic tape head being mounted to a first portion of said head mounting assembly, and
- the second end of said elongated lever arm engaging a second portion of said head mounting assembly at a second predetermined distance from said pivoting means,
- means oriented in the same direction as and parallel to said elongated rotating lead screw and engaging said head mounting assembly for slidably engaging said mounting assembly, so that as said elongated rotating lead screw rotates to move said first end of said elongated lever arm upwardly said second end of said elongated lever arm moves said mounting assembly downwardly along said engaging means, and so that as said elongated rotating lead screw rotates to move said first end of said elongated lever arm downwardly said second end of said elongated lever arm moves said mounting assembly upwardly along said engaging means and said engaging means and said pivoting means operating on said elongated lever arm so as to maintain said follower nut in a fixed relationship to said elongated lever arm, and
- means abutting said head mounting assembly for biasing said head assembly in a direction which causes said first end of said elongated lever arm to firmly engage said follower nut so that as said follower nut moves upwardly and downwardly along said lead screw, said elongated lever arm pivots about said pivoting means to correspondingly move downwardly and upwardly along said engaging means.
- 2. The tape head positioning system of claim 1 wherein said first end of said elongated lever arm and said second end of said elongated lever arm are both oriented on a straight line through said connection of said elongated lever arm to said pivoting means.
- 3. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
- a stepper motor having an extending rotational shaft, and
- said elongated rotating lead screw connected to said shaft of said stepper motor.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein said slideably engaging means is a single pin.
- 5. The system of claim 1 wherein said elongated lever arm is substantially rectangular in shape.
- 6. A fine tape head positioning system mounted in a chassis of a tape cartridge drive back-up system for positioning a magnetic tape head, said system comprising:
- a stepper motor mounted to said chassis,
- an elongated rotating lead screw extending from said stepper motor into said chassis providing rotational bi-directional movement,
- a follower nut threadingly engaging said elongated rotating lead screw,
- a single lever arm, said single lever arm having a first end engaging said follower nut to cause said follower nut to move upwardly or downwardly along said elongated rotating lead screw depending upon the direction said elongated rotating lead screw rotates and whereby said first end of said single lever arm moves upwardly and downwardly as said follower nut moves upwardly and downwardly,
- a pivot mount in said chassis,
- means connected to said pivot mount and connected through said single lever arm for pivoting said single lever arm at a first predetermined distance from said first end,
- a head mounting assembly, said head mounting assembly comprising:
- (a) said magnetic tape head being mounted to a first portion of said head mounting assembly, and
- the second end of said single lever arm engaging a second portion of said head mounting assembly at a second predetermined distance from said pivoting means,
- said tape head being mounted to said mounting assembly,
- means oriented in the same direction as and parallel to said elongated rotating lead screw and engaging said head mounting assembly for slidably engaging said mounting assembly, so that as said elongated rotating lead screw rotates to move said first end of said single lever arm upwardly said second end of said single lever arm moves said mounting assembly downwardly along said engaging means, and so that as said elongated rotating lead screw rotates to move said first end of said elongated lever arm downwardly said second end of said single lever arm moves said mounting assembly upwardly along said engaging means and said engaging means and said pivoting means operating on said single lever arm so as to maintain said follower nut in a fixed relationship to said single lever arm, and
- means abutting said head mounting assembly for biasing said head assembly in a direction which causes a portion of said first end of said single lever arm to firmly engage a surface of said follower nut so that as said follower nut moves upwardly and downwardly along said elongated rotating lead screw, said single lever arm pivots about said pivoting means to correspondingly move downwardly and upwardly along said engaging means.
- 7. The fine tape head positioning system of claim 6 wherein said elongated rotating lead screw is mounted over said shaft of said stepper motor.
- 8. The fine tape head positioning system of claim 6 wherein said pivot mount comprises two supports on opposing sides of said single lever arm and said pivoting means comprises a pin disposed through a formed hole in said single lever arm with the opposing ends of said pin connected to said two supports.
- 9. The fine tape head positioning system of claim 8 wherein said pin and said formed hole lie in a plane perpendicular to the direction of said elongated rotating lead screw.
- 10. The tape head positioning system of claim 6 wherein said first end of said elongated lever arm and said second end of said elongated lever arm are both oriented on a straight line through said connection of said elongated lever arm to said pivoting means.
- 11. The system of claim 6 wherein said elongated lever arm is substantially rectangular in shape.
- 12. The fine tape head positioning system of claim 6 wherein when said biasing means is released from said head mounting assembly said portion of said first end of said single lever releases from said surface of said follower nut.
- 13. A fine tape head positioning system mounted in a chassis of a tape cartridge drive back-up system for positioning a magnetic tape head, said system comprising:
- a stepper motor mounted to said chassis,
- an elongated rotating lead screw extending from said stepper motor into said chassis,
- a follower nut threadingly engaging said elongated rotating lead screw;
- a single lever arm, said single lever arm having a first end engaging said follower nut to cause said follower nut to move upwardly or downwardly along said elongated rotating lead screw depending upon the direction said elongated rotating lead screw rotates and whereby said first end of said single lever arm moves upwardly and downwardly as said follower nut moves upwardly and downwardly,
- a pivot mount in said chassis, said pivot mount further comprising two supports located on opposing sides of said single lever arm,
- a pin connected to said two supports and connected through a formed hole in said single lever arm for pivoting said single lever arm at a first predetermined distance from said first end,
- a head mounting assembly engaging the second end of said single lever arm at a second predetermined distance from said second end, said second end opposing said first end,
- said magnetic tape head being mounted to said mounting assembly,
- means oriented in the same direction as and parallel to said elongated rotating lead screw and engaging said head mounting assembly for slidably engaging said mounting assembly, so that as said elongated rotating lead screw rotates to move said first end of said lever upwardly said second end of said single lever arm moves said mounting assembly downwardly along said engaging means, and so that as said elongated rotating lead screw rotates to move said first end of said single lever arm downwardly said second end of said single lever arm moves said mounting assembly upwardly along said engaging means, and said engaging means and said pivoting means operating on said single lever arm so as to maintain said follower nut in a fixed relationship to said single lever arm, and
- means abutting said head mounting assembly for biasing said head assembly in a direction which causes a portion of said first end of said single lever arm to firmly engage a surface of said follower nut so that as said follower nut moves upwardly and downwardly along said lead screw, said lever pivots about said pivoting means to correspondingly move downwardly and upwardly along said engaging means, when said biasing means is released from said head mounting assembly said portion of said first end of said single lever releases from said surface of said follower nut.
- 14. The tape head positioning system of claim 13 wherein said first end of said elongated lever arm and said second end of said elongated lever arm are both oriented on a straight line through said connection of said elongated lever arm to said pivoting means.
- 15. The system of claim 13 wherein said elongated lever arm si substantially rectangular in shape.
- 16. The fine tape head positioning system of claim 13 wherein said elongated rotating lead screw is mounted over said shaft of said stepper motor.
