Claims
- 1. A method comprising:
- a) providing a body of ferrous material having at least one surface coated with aluminum;
- b) placing the body in a furnace;
- c) raising the temperature of the body in the furnace until the melting temperature of the aluminum is approached;
- d) maintaining the raised temperatures for a predetermined period of time; and
- e) providing a nitrogen atmosphere in the furnace during the performance of step d).
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said raised temperature is in the range of about 980.degree.-1125.degree. F.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein step 3) is performed by purging the furnace with nitrogen.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the purging is such as to reduce oxygen content in the furnace to less than 10 ppm.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein step 3) is performed such as to reduce oxygen content in the furnace to less than 10 ppm.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein step 3) is performed by backfilling the furnace with nitrogen.
