Claims
- 1. A fire retarded and thermal insulating layered wrap for protecting wires and cables, comprising:
a) a support layer and b) an intumescent coating applied to said support layer whereby said wrap provides means for low cost, high performance and combustion safe constructions.
- 2. The invention of claim 1 wherein said support layer is selected from the group consisting of woven fiberglass fabrics or plastic films or papers.
- 3. The invention of claim 1 wherein the intumescent coating is comprised of a thermosetting resin binder system of from about 5 parts to about 100 parts by weight of said intumescent material per 100 parts of said thermosetting resin.
- 4. The intumescent material of claim 1 is Maxichar Activated Phosphate blend or Fyrol MP Melamine Phosphate or AC-2 Melamine Pyrophosphate alone or admixed with about an equal quantity of melamine resin.
- 5. The intumescent coating of claim 1 wherein the coating is of sufficient thickness to provide the protection to wires and cables.
- 6. The intumescent coating of claim 1 wherein the coating is about 1.0-10 mils.
- 7. The invention defined in claim 1 further comprising a third layer of ceramic material bonded to said support layer.
- 8. The invention of claim 7 wherein said ceramic layer is mica.
- 9. A fire retarded and thermally insulated wire comprising:
a) a copper wire b) an insulating layer of a foamed polyolefin resin and c) a solid skin coating of said polyolefin and d) a helically applied wrap of claim 1 or claim 7 surrounding said foamed and skin coating with the intumescent layer on the outside.
- 10. The insulated wire of claim 9 wherein said polyolefin resin is selected from a medium or high density polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 11. An electrical cable for use in buildings, said cable comprising: a plurality of conductors, each individually enclosed by a polyolefin insulation material, said plurality of conductors being configured as a plurality of twisted pairs arranged in a conductor core, said conductor core or plurality of conductor core surrounded by a helically wound wrap of claim 1 or 7 having the intumescent coating facing out whereby providing low cost improved performance and safety.
- 12. The electrical cable of claim 11, wherein said electrical cable is surrounded by a non-halogen flame retardant polyolefin jacket material.
- 13. The electrical cable according to claim 11, further comprising an air gap defined between said conductor core and said outer jacket as means providing for expansion of intumescent coating.
- 14. An electrical cable for use as NM-B wiring, said cable comprising: three copper wires, two of said wires are enclosed by a polyolefin insulation material, the third is bare wire optionally covered with paper of about 4 mils thickness, the three wire bundle being configured as a core surrounded with a wrap of claim 1; a non-halogen flame retardant polyolefin outer jacket surrounding said wrapped core.
- 15. The cable of claim 14, wherein the wrap of claim 1 support substrate is paper.
- 16. The cable of claim 14, further comprising an air gap defined between said wrapped conductor core and said outer jacket as means for providing expansion of the intumescent coating.
- 17. The cable of claim 14, wherein the polyolefin insulation material is selected from a polyethylene, density 0.88-0.96, or a polypropylene resin.
