Claims
- 1. A system for detecting and suppressing fires at a heating device having a hood, wherein the heating device has at least one heat source energized by a source of gas or electric current comprising:
- a sensor for detecting the occurrence of a fire at the heating device;
- a control circuit connected to the sensor for emitting a signal indicating the occurrence of a fire;
- a fire extinguisher including an outlet for directing fire extinguishing material toward the heat source of the heating device and including a fire extinguisher operating valve which, when opened, releases the fire extinguishing material to flow through at least one nozzle toward the heat source; the fire extinguisher operating value being activated by the control circuit for opening the fire extinguisher operating valve upon the occurrence of a fire;
- a magnetic mount for mounting both the sensor and the nozzle, the magnetic mount being comprised of a housing having a permanent magnet and a hole therein, wherein the nozzle is attached to a fitting having a stud extending therefrom which is secured in the hole in the housing, whereby when the fitting and nozzle is secured in the housing, both the nozzle and the heat sensor are mounted to the hood by magnetic force of the magnet;
- shut-off means disposed between the heat source and the source of gas or electric current; and
- an operator operating upon the occurrence of a fire, the operator being connected to the shut-off means to activate the shut-off means for interrupting flow of gas or electric current from the source thereof to the heat source upon the occurrence of a fire.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the nozzle, heat sensor and housing are attached to the hood of the heating device by magnetic attraction of the permanent magnet to the hood.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the heating device is a residential cook stove or a fryer.
- 4. The system of claim 2, wherein the heating device is a commercial cook stove or a fryer.
- 5. A system for detecting and suppressing fires on residential and commercial cook stoves and fryers having cooking areas energized by a source of gas or electric current, the system comprising:
- at least two heat sensors for detecting increased temperature;
- a fire extinguisher operating valve;
- a shut-off disposed between the source of gas or electric current and the cooking areas;
- a shut-off operator for operating the shut-off upon one of the heat sensors detecting an increase in temperature indicative of a fire at a cooking area;
- an audible and visual alarm for generating acoustic and visual signals upon the occurrence of a fire at a cooking area, and
- an operating circuit interconnecting the heat sensors, fire extinguisher, operating valve, shut-off operator audible alarm and visual alarm, the operating circuit including circuit monitoring circuitry for sounding the audible alarm and illuminating the visual alarm if a component of the circuit fails and for still operating the fire extinguisher operating valve and shut-off valve even if one temperature sensor fails.
- 6. The system of claim 5 further including a battery connected to the operating circuit for providing a source of current for the operating circuit, the monitoring circuitry being connected to the battery to monitor current provided by the battery and to energize the alarms upon the current dropping below a selected level.
- 7. The system of claim 6 wherein the shut-off operator includes an acoustically sensitive device tuned to operate upon detection of the acoustic signal from the audible alarm to interrupt flow of gas or electric current from the source thereof to the cooking areas.
- 8. The system of claim 7 wherein the shut-off includes a separate battery with a low battery alarm for powering the shut-off when the cooking areas are energized by a source of gas.
- 9. The system of claim 5 wherein the shut-off operator includes an acoustically sensitive device tuned to operate upon detection of the acoustic signal from the audible alarm to interrupt flow of gas or electric current from the source thereof to the cooking areas.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the shut-off includes a separate battery with a low battery alarm for powering the shut-off when the cooking areas are energized by a source of gas.
