Claims
- 1. A fire resistant roofing asphalt composition capable of achieving an unrestricted UL Class A rating when applied to layers of fiberglass and polyester mats consisting essentially of:
- a thermoplastic elastomer modified bitumen;
- a filler; and
- no greater than about 10 percent by weight of a fire retardant consisting essentially of:
- a brominated diphenyl ether;
- antimony oxide; and
- zinc borate.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition comprises, in weight percent, about 30-90% modified bitumen, about 10-40% filler, up to about 10% brominated diphenyl ether, up to about 5% antimony oxide; and up to about 5% zinc borate.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic elastomer comprises a styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein said filler comprises a mineral dust.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein said brominated diphenyl ether comprises decabromodiphenyl ether.
- 6. The composition of claim 3 wherein said composition comprises, in weight percent, about 30-90% bitumen, about 4-16% styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer, about 10-40% filler, up to about 10% brominated diphenyl ether, up to about 5% antimony oxide; and up to about 5% zinc borate.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein said filler comprises a mineral dust.
- 8. The composition of claim 7 wherein said brominated diphenyl ether comprises decabromodiphenyl ether.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein said filler comprises limestone.
- 10. A fire resistant roofing asphalt composition capable of achieving an unrestricted UL Class A rating when applied to layers of fiberglass and polyester mats consisting essentially of:
- a thermoplastic elastomer modified bitumen;
- filler; and
- a fire retardant consisting essentially of, in weight percent of said composition:
- about 0.5-10% of a brominated diphenyl ether;
- about 0.5-5% of antimony oxide; and
- about 0.5-5% of zinc borate.
- 11. The composition of claim 10 wherein said brominated diphenyl ether comprises decabromodiphenyl ether.
- 12. The composition of claim 10 wherein said composition comprises, in weight percent, about 30-90% bitumen, about 10-40% filler, about 5% brominated diphenyl ether, about 2% antimony oxide; and about 2% zinc borate.
- 13. The composition of claim 10 wherein said filler comprises a mineral dust.
- 14. The composition of claim 10 wherein said thermoplastic elastomer comprises a styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer.
- 15. The composition of claim 14 wherein said brominated diphenyl ether comprises decabromodiphenyl ether.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 wherein said fire retardant is present in an amount no greater than about 10% by weight of said composition.
