Claims
- 1. A composition suitable for extruding a fire-retardant product, comprising CPVC, PVC, and a fire retardant, with the quantities of the CPVC, PVC, and fire retardant being selected such that a product made from the composition will meet at least one of the ASTM E84-01 and UL 723 fire retardant standards.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 comprising CPVC in an amount of 50-100 PHR.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the CPVC is greater than 60 PHR.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 comprising PVC in an amount of 50-0 PHR.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein the PVC is less than 40 PHR.
- 6. The composition of claim 4 comprising a fire retardant in an amount sufficient such that the product made from the composition meets the fire-retardant standards.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein the fire retardant is Al Trihydrate.
- 8. The composition of claim 7 wherein the Al Trihydrate comprises 15-50 PHR of the composition.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the Al Trihydrate comprises at least 20 PHR.
- 10. The composition of claim 8 wherein the CPVC comprises substantially 80 PHR of the composition.
- 11. The composition of claim 10 wherein the PVC comprises substantially 20 PHR of the composition.
- 12. The composition of claim 11 wherein the Al Trihydrate comprises substantially 30 PHR of the composition.
- 13. The composition of claim 12 and further comprising at least one of the following ingredients:
2.7-3.3 PHR Zeolite, 0.36-0.44 PHR Blowing Agent, 9-11 PHR Process Aid, 2.475-2.525 PHR Tin Stabilizer, 0.9-1.1 PHR Exter Wax, 0.9-1.1 PHR OPE Wax, 2.7-3.3 PHR Impact Modifier, and 2.7-3.3 PHR TiO2.
- 14. A composition suitable for extruding a fire-retardant product, comprising:
50-100 PHR CPVC, 50-0 PHR PVC, and a fire retardant in sufficient amount such that the product made from the composition is fire retardant.
- 15. The composition of claim 14 comprising substantially 80 PHR CPVC.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 comprising substantially 20 PHR PVC.
- 17. The composition of claim 16 wherein the fire retardant is Al Trihydrate.
- 18. The composition of claim 17 wherein the Al Trihydrate comprises 20-50 PHR.
- 19. The composition of claim 18 comprising substantially 30 PHR Al Trihydrate.
- 20. The composition of claim 19 and further comprising at least one of the following ingredients:
2.7-3.3 PHR Zeolite, 0.36-0.44 PHR Blowing Agent, 9-11 PHR Process Aid, 2.475-2.525 PHR Tin Stabilizer, 0.9-1.1 PHR Exter Wax, 0.9-1.1 PHR OPE Wax, 2.7-3.3 PHR Impact Modifier, and 2.7-3.3 PHR TiO2.
- 21. The composition of claim 14 wherein the CPVC is at least 60 PHR.
- 22. The composition of claim 21 wherein the PVC is at less than 40 PHR.
- 23. A slotwall panel for use in a slotwall, comprising:
a body having a front and a rear face; at least two slots formed in the body and opening onto the front face and forming a slat; and the body being made from a composition such that the body meets at least one of the ASTM E84-01 and UL 723 fire retardant standards.
- 24. The slotwall panel of claim 23 wherein the composition comprising 50-100 PHR of CPVC.
- 25. The slotwall panel of claim 24 wherein the composition further comprises 50-0 PHR of PVC.
- 26. The slotwall panel of claim 25 wherein the composition comprises greater than 60 PHR of CPVC and less than 40 PHR of PVC.
- 26. The slotwall panel of claim 25 wherein the composition further comprises 20-50 PHR of Al Trihydrate.
- 28. The slotwall panel of claim 26 wherein the composition comprises substantially 80 PHR CPVC.
- 29. The slotwall panel of claim 28 wherein the composition comprises substantially 20 PHR PVC.
- 30. The slotwall panel of claim 29 wherein the composition comprises substantially 30 PHR Al Trihydrate.
- 31. The slotwall panel of claim 30 wherein the composition further comprises at least of the following ingredients:
2.7-3.3 PHR Zeolite, 0.36-0.44 PHR Blowing Agent, 9-11 PHR Process Aid, 2.475-2.525 PHR Tin Stabilizer, 0.9-1.1 PHR Exter Wax, 0.9-1.1 PHR OPE Wax, 2.7-3.3 PHR Impact Modifier, and 2.7-3.3 PHR TiO2.
- 32. A method for making a fire-retardant element of a predetermined configuration for use in a slotwall, comprising:
forming a composition by mixing 50-100 PHR of CPVC, 50-0 PHR of PVC, and a fire retardant in a sufficient amount such that the element made from the composition meets at least one of the ASTM E84-01 and UL 723 fire retardant standards; extruding the composition to form a blank; and finishing the blank to form the element with the predetermined configuration.
- 33. The method of claim 32 wherein the mixing comprises mixing the CPVC until a first temperature is reached, then cooling the mixture while the PVC is mixed.
- 34. The method of claim 32 wherein the forming of the composition comprises mixing 20-50 PHR Al Trihydrate as the fire retardant.
- 35. The method of claim 34 wherein the forming of the composition further comprises mixing at least one of the following ingredients with the CPVC, PVC, and the Al Trihydrate: 2.7-3.3 PHR Zeolite, 0.36-0.44 PHR Blowing Agent, 9-11 PHR Process Aid, 2.475-2.525 PHR Tin Stabilizer, 0.9-1.1 PHR Exter Wax, 0.9-1.1 PHR OPE Wax, 2.7-3.3 PHR Impact Modifier, and 2.7-3.3 PHR TiO2.
- 36. The method of claim 35 wherein the mixing further comprises first mixing the CPVC, Tin Stabilizer, and Zeolite until either the mixture temperature reaches a first predetermined temperature or for approximately 3 minutes.
- 37. The method of claim 36 wherein the first predetermined temperature is 175 F.
- 38. The method of claim 36 wherein the mixing further comprises mixing the Blowing Agent, Process Aid, Ester Wax, OPE Wax, Impact Modifier, TiO2 and the Al Trihydrate until either the mixture temperature reaches a second predetermined temperature, which is higher than the first predetermined temperature, or for approximately 3 minutes.
- 39. The method of claim 38 wherein the second predetermined temperature is 220 F.
- 40. The method of claim 38 wherein the mixing further comprises cooling the mixture to a third predetermined temperature, which is lower than the second predetermined temperature, and mixing the PVC to the mixture while the mixture is cooled.
- 41. The method of claim 40 wherein the third predetermined temperature is 130 F.
- 42. The method of claim 40 wherein the finishing step further comprises forming the blank into a shape having substantially the same cross section as the predetermined configuration.
- 43. The method of claim 42 wherein the forming step includes forming two or more slots in the blank to form one or more slats suitable for use in a slotwall.
- 44. The method of claim 42 wherein the finishing step further comprises sizing the extruded composition after it is formed into the predetermined configuration.
- 45. The method of claim 44 wherein the finishing step further comprises pulling the extruded composition after it is sized.
- 46. The method of claim 34 wherein the forming of the composition further comprises mixing 80 PHR of CPVC.
- 47. The method of claim 46 wherein the forming of the composition further comprises mixing 20 PHR of PVC.
- 48. The method of claim 47 wherein the forming of the composition further comprises mixing 30 PHR of Al Trihydrate.
- 49. The method of claim 48 wherein the forming of the composition further comprises mixing 3.0 PHR Zeolite, 0.4 PHR Blowing Agent, 10 PHR Process Aid, 2.5 PHR Tin Stabilizer, 1.0 PHR Ester Wax, 1.0 PHR OPE Wax, 3.0 PHR Impact Modifier, and 3.0 PHR TiO2.
