- 2. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the annular clutch member and the ring gear are unitarily formed.
- 3. The power tool of claim 1, wherein an impact absorbing structure is disposed between the ring gear and the annular clutch member.
- 4. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the engagement assembly includes a spring member to bias the follower member against the clutch member to inhibit relative rotation between the clutch member and the follower member when the magnitude of the output torque is less than the predetermined maximum torque.
- 5. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the follower member includes a spherical tip portion for contacting the clutch profile.
- 6. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the clutch profile includes a plurality of tapered ramps.
- 7. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the transmission includes a first portion and a second portion, the first portion including the planetary gearset and being disposed between the motor and the second portion, the first portion receiving an input torque from the motor and generating an intermediate torque output in response thereto, the second portion receiving the intermediate torque output, the ring gear only being associated with the first portion of the transmission so that the clutch assembly limits the torque output of the power tool by limiting torque transmission between the first and second portions of the transmission.
- 8. The power tool of claim 7, wherein the first portion comprises at least two transmission stages.
- 9. The power tool of claim 8, wherein the ring gear is only associated with one of the transmission stages that make up the first portion of the transmission.
- 10. The power tool of claim 9, wherein the ring gear is associated with a transmission stage that is in closest proximity to the motor.
- 11. A power tool comprising:
a housing; a motor disposed in the housing; an output spindle; a transmission assembly having a transmission sleeve and a transmission, the transmission sleeve including a central bore in which the transmission is at least partially received, the transmission having a plurality of transmission stages that cooperate to provide a transmission input, which is associated with the motor, and a transmission output, which is associated with the output spindle, one of the transmission stages being a planetary gearset with a ring gear, the ring gear having opposite axial ends; and a clutch assembly associated with the transmission and operable for limiting an output torque of the power tool, the clutch assembly including an annular rotatable clutch member and an engagement assembly, the annular clutch member being coupled to the ring gear and having a clutch face with a predetermined clutch profile, the engagement assembly having a follower member that is housed in the transmission sleeve and abutted against the clutch member, the follower member cooperating with the clutch profile to inhibit rotation of the clutch member relative to the follower member only when a magnitude of the output torque is less than a predetermined maximum torque; wherein the clutch face is positioned between the opposite axial ends of the ring gear.
- 12. The power tool of claim 11, wherein the ring gear is not shared with any of the other transmission stages.
- 13. The power tool of claim 12, wherein activation of the clutch assembly permits the ring gear to rotate relative to the transmission sleeve to limit the transmission of torque to another of the transmission stages.
- 14. The power tool of claim 11, wherein activation of the clutch assembly permits the ring gear to rotate relative to the transmission sleeve to limit the transmission of torque to another of the transmission stages.
- 15. The power tool of claim 11, wherein the follower member is disposed in a follower bore that is formed in the transmission sleeve, the follower bore being generally parallel to the central bore.
- 16. The power tool of claim 11, wherein the annular clutch member and the ring gear are unitarily formed.
- 17. The power tool of claim 11, wherein an impact absorbing structure is disposed between the ring gear and the annular clutch member.
- 18. A power tool comprising:
a motor; an output spindle; a transmission having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion of the transmission being associated with the output spindle, the first portion having at least one stage, the at least one stage including a planetary gear assembly with plurality of gears including a ring gear, the ring gear not being shared by the second portion of the transmission, the first portion being associated with the motor and receiving a torque input therefrom, the first portion outputting an intermediate torque to the second portion of the transmission, the second portion of the transmission receiving the intermediate torque and responsively producing an output torque that is uninterruptingly transmitted to the output spindle, the ring gear including opposite end faces; and a clutch assembly associated with the transmission, the clutch assembly including an annular rotatable clutch member and an engagement assembly, the annular clutch member being coupled to the ring gear and having a clutch face with a predetermined clutch profile, the engagement assembly having a follower member that is abutted against the clutch member, the follower member cooperating with the clutch profile to inhibit rotation of the clutch member relative to the follower member only when a magnitude of the intermediate torque is less than a predetermined maximum torque; wherein the clutch face is located between the opposite end faces of the ring gear.
- 19. The power tool of claim 18, wherein the annular clutch member and the ring gear are unitarily formed.
- 20. The power tool of claim 18, wherein an impact absorbing structure is disposed between the ring gear and the annular clutch member.
