Claims
- 1. A power tool comprising:a motor having an output shaft; a transmission having a first portion with a first gear ratio and a second portion having an output gear ratio, the first portion including a planetary gear assembly with a ring gear, a sun gear and a planet gear assembly, the ring gear not being shared with the second portion of the transmission, the planet gear assembly having a planet carrier and a plurality of planet gears, the planet carrier having a plurality of pins for rotatably supporting the plurality of planet gears and an output sun gear, the plurality of planet gears meshingly engaged with the sun gear and the ring gear, the sun gear coupled to the output shaft and receiving a torque input from the motor, the output sun gear meshingly engaged with the second portion and outputting an intermediate torque output, the second portion receiving the intermediate torque output and producing an output torque; and a clutch assembly for limiting a torque output of the power tool, the clutch assembly having an annular rotatable clutch member and an engagement assembly, the clutch member coupled to the ring gear, the clutch member having a predetermined clutch profile and the engagement assembly having a follower member, the follower member abutting the clutch member and cooperating with the clutch profile to inhibit rotation of the clutch member relative to the follower member only when the magnitude of the intermediate torque output is less than a predetermined maximum torque.
- 2. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the annular clutch member and the ring gear are unitarily formed.
- 3. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the follower member includes a spherical tip portion for contacting the clutch profile.
- 4. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the clutch profile is sinusoidally shaped.
- 5. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the clutch profile includes a plurality of tapered ramps.
- 6. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the follower member is movable along an axis parallel the longitudinal centerline of the ring gear.
- 7. The power tool of claim 1, wherein an impact absorbing structure is disposed between the ring gear and the annular clutch member.
- 8. The power tool of claim 7, wherein at least one of the annular clutch member and the impact absorbing structure includes a locking element for engaging a mating locking element formed on the ring gear, the locking element engaging the mating locking element to prevent relative rotation between the ring gear and the at least one of the annular clutch member and the impact absorbing structure.
- 9. The power tool of claim 1, wherein the engagement assembly includes a spring member to bias the follower member against the clutch member to inhibit relative rotation between the clutch member and the follower member when the magnitude of the intermediate torque output is less than a predetermined maximum torque.
- 10. The power tool of claim 9, further comprising an adjustment mechanism for selectively adjusting a force exerted by the spring member onto the follower member.
- 11. A power tool comprising:a motor having an output shaft; a pinion coupled for rotation with the output shaft of the motor; a three-stage, three-speed planetary transmission having a first planetary portion that is not associated with an output stage of the three-stage, three-speed planetary transmission, the first planetary portion including a plurality of planet gears and a ring gear, the planet gears being in meshing engagement with the pinion and the ring gear, the ring gear not being shared by any other stage of the three-stage, three-speed planetary transmission; and a clutch assembly for limiting a torsional output of the three-stage, three-speed planetary transmission, the clutch assembly having an annular clutch member and an engagement assembly, the clutch member being coupled to the ring gear and having a predetermined clutch profile, the engagement assembly having a follower member and an adjustment mechanism, the adjustment mechanism being configured to produce a biasing force of a predetermined magnitude to bias the follower member into abutment with the clutch member, the follower member cooperating with the clutch profile to inhibit relative rotation between the clutch member and the follower member when the torsional output of the first planetary portion is less than a predetermined maximum torque.
- 12. A power tool comprising:a housing; a motor disposed in the housing; an output spindle; a transmission having a transmission sleeve, a first portion and a second portion, the transmission sleeve including a central bore in which the first and second portions of the transmission are at least partially received, the first portion of the transmission being associated with the motor and receiving a torque input therefrom, the second portion of the transmission being associated with the output spindle, the first portion of the transmission having at least one stage, the at least one stage including a first stage with a ring gear, the ring gear not being shared by any other portion of the transmission, the first portion of the transmission outputting an intermediate torque to the second portion of the transmission, the second portion of the transmission receiving the intermediate torque and responsively producing an output torque that is uninterruptingly transmitted to the output spindle; and a clutch assembly associated with the transmission, the clutch assembly including an annular rotatable clutch member and an engagement assembly, the annular clutch member being coupled to the ring gear and having a predetermined clutch profile, the engagement assembly having a follower member that is housed in the transmission sleeve and abutted against the clutch member, the follower member cooperating with the clutch profile to inhibit rotation of the clutch member relative to the follower member only when a magnitude of the intermediate torque is less than a predetermined maximum torque.
- 13. A power tool comprising:a motor; an output spindle; a transmission having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion of the transmission being associated with the output spindle, the first portion having at least one stage, the at least one stage including a planetary gear assembly with plurality of gears including a ring gear, the ring gear not being shared by the second portion of the transmission, the first portion being associated with the motor and receiving a torque input therefrom, the first portion outputting an intermediate torque to the second portion of the transmission, the second portion of the transmission receiving the intermediate torque and responsively producing an output torque that is uninterruptingly transmitted to the output spindle; and a clutch assembly associated with the transmission, the clutch assembly including an annular rotatable clutch member and an engagement assembly, the annular clutch member being coupled to the ring gear and having a predetermined clutch profile, the engagement assembly having a follower member that is abutted against the clutch member, the follower member cooperating with the clutch profile to inhibit rotation of the clutch member relative to the follower member only when a magnitude of the intermediate torque is less than a predetermined maximum torque.
- 14. The power tool of claim 13, wherein the annular clutch member and the ring gear are unitarily formed.
- 15. The power tool of claim 13, wherein the clutch profile is sinusoidally shaped.
- 16. The power tool of claim 13, wherein the clutch profile includes a plurality of tapered ramps.
- 17. The power tool of claim 13, wherein the follower member is movable along an axis that is parallel to the longitudinal centerline of the ring gear.
- 18. The power tool of claim 13, wherein an impact absorbing structure is disposed between the ring gear and the annular clutch member.
- 19. The power tool of claim 18, wherein at least one of the annular clutch member and the impact absorbing structure includes a locking element for engaging a mating locking element formed on the ring gear, the locking element engaging the mating locking element to prevent relative rotation between the ring gear and the at least one of the annular clutch member and the impact absorbing structure.
- 20. The power tool of claim 13, wherein the engagement assembly includes a spring member to bias the follower member against the clutch member to inhibit relative rotation between the clutch member and the follower member when a magnitude of the intermediate torque is less than the predetermined maximum torque.
- 21. The power tool of claim 20, further comprising an adjustment mechanism for selectively adjusting a force exerted by the spring member onto the follower member.
- 22. The power tool of claim 13, wherein the follower member includes a spherical end section for contacting the clutch profile.
- 23. The power tool of claim 22, wherein the follower member has a length that is greater than a radius that defines a size of the spherical end section.
- 24. The power tool of claim 13, wherein the first portion of the transmission is a two-stage planetary gear assembly.
- 25. The power tool of claim 24, wherein the ring gear is associated with a first stage of the two-stage planetary gear assembly.
