Claims
- 1. A tube fitting for a tube end, comprising:
a female threaded coupling member and a male threaded coupling member that are threadably joined together to assemble the fitting onto a tube end; said female threaded coupling member having a tube gripping device attached thereto; said tube gripping device separating from said female threaded member during assembly of the fitting to a pulled-up condition.
- 2. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said tube gripping device functions as a single ferrule after separation from said female threaded member.
- 3. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said male threaded member comprises an angled camming surface that engages a front end of said tube gripping device during pull-up to cause said device to separate from said female threaded member.
- 4. The tube fitting of claim 3 wherein said tube gripping device is attached to said female threaded member by a thin web.
- 5. The tube fitting of claim 4 wherein said thin web is annular.
- 6. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said female coupling member and tube gripping device are hardened to a hardness ratio that is at least about 3.3 times the hardness of the material of the tube end on the Vickers scale.
- 7. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said tube gripping device is machined integral with said female threaded member.
- 8. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said male threaded member comprises an angled camming surface that contacts a front end of said tube gripping element during pull-up; said camming surface forming an included angle of about 35° to about 60° relative to a longitudinal axis of the fitting.
- 9. The tube fitting of claim 8 wherein said female and male threaded components are metal; and wherein said tube gripping device comprises a generally narrow line contact metal to metal seal against said camming surface upon complete pull-up of the fitting.
- 10. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said tube gripping device separates from said female threaded member along a surface that avoids interference with said female threaded member during further pull-up of the fitting.
- 11. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said separated tube gripping element functions as a single ferrule during final pull-up of the fitting; said ferrule having a front end that bites into an outer surface of the tube end.
- 12. The tube fitting of claim 11 wherein said separated ferrule hinges radially inward during final pull-up so that a central portion of the ferrule is radially compressed against the tube end to collet the tube end at a location that is axially from said front end tube bite.
- 13. The tube fitting of claim 12 wherein said tube gripping device comprises an interior cylindrical bore and a circumferential radial recess formed therein at a location that is axially spaced from said front end.
- 14. A tube fitting for a tube end, comprising:
a female threaded coupling member and a male threaded coupling member that are threadably joined together to assemble the fitting onto a tube end; said female threaded coupling member having a tube gripping device attached thereto; said male threaded coupling member having a tube end receiving bore and a camming surface at an end of said bore and facing said tube gripping device during assembly; said tube gripping device engaging said camming surface during pull-up and separating from said female threaded member.
- 15. The tube fitting of claim 14 wherein said camming surface has a camming angle of about 35° to about 60° relative to a longitudinal axis of the fitting; said tube gripping device forming a primary seal against said camming surface.
- 16. The tube fitting of claim 15 wherein at least a portion of said tube gripping device has a hardness ratio that is at least about 3.3 time the hardness of the materiel of the tube end on the Vickers scale.
- 17. The tube fitting of claim 16 wherein the tube end is made of stainless steel.
- 18. The tube fitting of claim 15 wherein said tube gripping device functions as a single ferrule upon separation from said female threaded member.
- 19. The tube fitting of claim 15 wherein said camming angle is about 45°.
- 20. The tube fitting of claim 15 wherein said tube gripping device forms a generally narrow line contact metal to metal primary seal against said camming surface.
- 21. The tube fitting of claim 14 wherein said tube gripping device is attached to said female threaded member by a thin web.
- 22. The tube fitting of claim 21 wherein said thin web comprises a stress concentrating notch.
- 23. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said tube gripping device has a driven surface that contacts a drive surface of said female coupling member with a difference angle therebetween during pull-up of the fitting.
- 24. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said tube gripping device comprises a substantially continuous interior cylindrical bore.
- 25. The tube fitting of claim 24 wherein said bore comprises a counterbore at a back end of said tube gripping device.
- 26. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein said tube gripping device comprises a generally cylindrical interior bore with a circumferential radial recess formed therein.
- 27. The tube fitting of claim 1 wherein during separation of said tube gripping device from said female coupling member, a rearward portion of said tube gripping device is plastically deformed with a contour.
- 28. The tube fitting of claim 27 wherein said contour comprises a convex shape.
- 29. The tube fitting of claim 27 wherein said contour is generally located radially spaced from the tube end.
- 30. A tube fitting for a tube end, comprising:
a female coupling member and a male coupling member that are joined together to assemble the fitting onto a tube end; said female coupling member having a tube gripping device attached thereto; said tube gripping device separating from said female member during assembly of the fitting to a pulled-up condition.
