Claims
- 1. In an electrolytic cell having
- (a) an anolyte compartment fabricated of a material resistant to concentrated, chlorinated, alkali metal chloride brines;
- (b) an anode in said anolyte compartment;
- (c) a catholyte compartment fabricated of a material resistant to concentrated, alkali metal hydroxide solutions;
- (d) cathode means comprising porous particles having areas of HO.sub.2.sup.- disproportionation catalyst;
- (e) means for feeding an oxidant to said catholyte compartment; and
- (f) an ion permeable barrier interposed between said anode and said cathode means;
- the improvement wherein said HO.sub.2.sup.- disproportionation catalyst is LaCoO.sub.3.
- 2. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the porous particles comprise a porous, carbonaceous substrate having LaCoO.sub.3 thereon.
- 3. The electrolytic cell of claim 2 wherein the carbonaceous substrate is activated carbon having a surface area of about 100 to about 500 square meters per gram.
- 4. The electrolytic cell of claim 2 wherein said porous carbonaceous particles comprise a hydrophobic material.
- 5. The electrolytic cell of claim 4 wherein said porous hydrophobic material is a polyfluorocarbon.
