Claims
- 1. An improved single piece earth boring bit for use in drilling a borehole in an earthen formation, the improvement comprising:
- a body including a solid bit face on one end;
- a plurality of spaced compacts, at least one of the spaced compacts being formed with a hard metal jacket and an integrally formed, diamond filled core and being mounted as a wear resistant insert on the solid bit face, said at least one spaced compact so formed being further characterized as having a top surface comprised of exposed diamond surrounded by a ring of jacket material and wherein at least 75% of the top surface of the compact is exposed diamond.
- 2. An improved single piece earth boring bit of the type having a body including a solid bit face on one end, the bit increasing in external diameter between a nose and a gage region, the improvement comprising wear resistant inserts located in the gage region of the bit face, at least one of the inserts comprising a hard metal jacket and an integrally formed, diamond filled core, said at least one insert so formed being further characterized as having a top surface comprised of exposed diamond surrounded by a ring of jacket material and wherein at least 75% of the top surface of the compact is exposed diamond.
- 3. An improved single piece earth boring bit of the type having a body including a solid bit face on one end, the bit face including a circumferential heel row of wear resistant inserts which remove earth at the bottom corner of a borehole, the improvement comprising at least one wear resistant insert located in the heel row comprising a hard metal jacket and an integrally formed, diamond filled core, said at least one insert so formed being further characterized as having a top surface comprised of exposed diamond surrounded by a ring of jacket material and wherein at least 75% of the top surface of the compact is exposed diamond.
- 4. The improved earth boring bit of claim 2, wherein said at least one improved wear resistant insert so formed is in the shape of a cylindrical diamond core having a radius surrounded by a jacket having cylindrical sidewalls of a generally uniform thickness, the jacket thickness being no greater than one half the radius of the cylindrical diamond core.
- 5. The improved earth boring bit of claim 4, wherein the hard metal jackets are formed of a sintered metal carbide.
- 6. The improved earth boring bit of claim 5, wherein at least 10% by volume of said improved insert is sintered diamond.
- 7. An improved single piece earth boring bit for use in drilling a borehole in an earthen formation, the improvement comprising:
- a body including a solid bit face on one end;
- a plurality of spaced compacts, at least one of the spaced compacts being formed with a hard metal jacket and an integrally formed, diamond filled core and being mounted as a wear resistant insert on the solid bit face, said at least one spaced compact so formed being further characterized as having a composition wherein sintered diamond is the majority by volume of the compact.
- 8. The improved earth boring bit of claim 7, wherein the hard metal jacket is formed of a sintered metal carbide.
- 9. The improved earth boring bit of claim 7, wherein the insert is further characterized as having a top surface comprised of exposed diamond surrounded by a ring of jacket material and wherein at least 75% of the top surface of the compact is exposed diamond.
- 10. The improved earth boring bit of claim 7, wherein the insert so formed is in the shape of a cylindrical diamond core having a radius surrounded by a jacket having cylindrical sidewalls of generally uniform thickness being no greater than one half the radius of the cylindrical diamond core.
- 11. An improved single piece earth boring bit of the type having a body including a solid bit face on one end, the bit increasing in external diameter between a nose and a gage region, the improvement comprising wear resistant inserts located in the gage region of the bit face, at least one of the inserts comprising a hard metal jacket and an integrally formed, diamond filled core, said at least one insert so formed being further characterized as having a composition wherein sintered diamond is at least the majority by volume of the compact.
- 12. The improved earth boring bit of claim 11, wherein the hard metal jacket is formed of a sintered metal carbide.
- 13. The improved earth boring bit of claim 11, wherein the insert is further characterized as having a top surface comprised of exposed diamond surrounded by a ring of jacket material and wherein at least 75% of the top surface of the compact is exposed diamond.
- 14. The improved earth boring bit of claim 11, wherein the insert so formed is in the shape of a cylindrical diamond core having a radius surrounded by a jacket having cylindrical sidewalls of generally uniform thickness being no greater than one half the radius of the cylindrical diamond core.
- 15. An improved single piece earth boring bit of the type having a body including a solid bit face on one end, the bit face including a circumferential heel row of wear resistant inserts which remove earth at the bottom corner of a borehole, the improvement comprising at least one wear resistant insert located in the heel row comprising a hard metal jacket and an integrally formed, diamond filled core, said at least one insert so formed being further characterized as having a composition wherein sintered diamond is at least the majority by volume of the compact.
- 16. The improved earth boring bit of claim 15, wherein the hard metal jacket is formed of a sintered metal carbide.
- 17. The improved earth boring bit of claim 15, wherein the insert is further characterized as having a top surface comprised of exposed diamond surrounded by a ring of jacket material and wherein at least 75% of the top surface of the compact is exposed diamond.
- 18. The improved earth boring bit of claim 15, wherein the insert so formed is in the shape of a cylindrical diamond core having a radius surrounded by a jacket having cylindrical sidewalls of generally uniform thickness being no greater than one half the radius of the cylindrical diamond core.
