Claims
- 1. A method of providing telephone service, comprising:
providing a wireless device to provide telephone service to a POTS device by communicating through a wireless telephone system; and detecting whether an attempt to use the wireless device is occurring at a first location by analyzing switch records to determine base station information indicative of whether the wireless device is at the first location when in use.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising charging a first rate when the attempt to use occurs at the first location and otherwise charging a second rate.
- 3. A method of providing telephone service, comprising:
providing a wireless device to provide telephone service to a POTS device by communicating through a wireless telephone system; and detecting whether an attempt to use the wireless device is occurring at a first location by storing an indication of the first location in a memory, utilizing a geonavigational position system receiver to find an indication of the current location, and comparing the current location to the first location.
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising charging a first rate when the attempt to use occurs at the first location and otherwise charging a second rate.
- 5. A wireless device that communicates through a wireless telephone system, comprising:
a POTS connection to provide communication between the wireless telephone system and a POTS device; a memory storing an indication of a first location; a geonavigational position system receiver for producing an indication of a current location; a comparator that compares the indication of the first location to the indication of the current location to determine whether the wireless device is at the first location.
- 6. The wireless device of claim 5, further comprising and RJ-11 jack for connection to the POTS device.
- 7. The wireless device of claim 5, further comprising a housing that contains the memory, geonavigational position system receiver, and the comparator.
- 8. The wireless device of claim 5, further comprising circuitry to prevent use of the wireless device when the comparator indicates that the wireless device is not at the first location.
- 9. A method of providing telephone service, comprising:
providing a wireless device to provide telephone service to a POTS device by communicating through a wireless telephone system; and detecting whether an attempt to use the wireless device is occurring at a first location by transmitting a signal from the first location and attempting to receive the signal at the wireless device.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising charging a first rate when the attempt to use occurs at the first location and otherwise charging a second rate.
- 11. A system for providing telephone service to a POTS device interfaced to a wireless device that communicates through a wireless telephone network, comprising:
an emitter separate from the wireless device that produces a first signal; and a receiver at the wireless device that is configured to receive the first signal when in proximity to the emitter and provide an indication of receiving the first signal to indicate that the wireless device is in proximity to the emitter.
- 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the first signal has an encoded ID and wherein the receiver is configured to receive the first signal only when the encoded ID is present.
- 13. The system of claim 11, wherein the wireless device includes circuitry to prevent use of the wireless device when the receiver indicates that the wireless device is not in proximity to the emitter.
- 14. A wireless device for providing telephone service including data transmission, comprising:
a data transfer component for receiving digital data and producing a POTS signal that includes the digital data; a converter that provides a wireless signal that includes the digital data in response to receiving the POTS signal; and wireless components that transfer the wireless signal that includes the digital data through a wireless telephone system.
- 15. The wireless device of claim 14, wherein the data transfer component comprises a serial port input.
- 16. The wireless device of claim 14, wherein the data transfer component is a modem.
- 17. The wireless device of claim 14, further comprising a connection to a POTS device, wherein the converter also provides a wireless signal that includes information of a POTS signal in response to receiving a POTS signal from the POTS device and the wireless components transfer the wireless signal that includes the information of the POTS signal from the POTS device through the wireless telephone system.
