Claims
- 1. A flame-retardant, anti-dripping polyamide composition comprising a high temperature polyphthalamide, a halogen-containing organic compound, and an anti-drip effective amount of an anti-drip component comprising a polymer formed from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one carboxylic acid containing monomer.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 further comprising from about 10 to about 60 wt. %, based on total composition, glass fiber.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamide is a copolymer comprising at least about 40 mole % recurring aliphatic diamine terephthalamide units.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamide is a copolymer comprising recurring aliphatic diamine terephthalamide units and recurring aliphatic diamine aliphatic diamide units.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein said copolymer comprises from about 50 to 95 mole % said recurring aliphatic diamine terephthalamide units.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamide is a copolymer comprising recurring aliphatic diamine terephthalamide units having the structure
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamide is a copolymer comprising at least about 40 mole % recurring aliphatic diamine terephthalamide units having the structure:
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamide is a copolymer comprising recurring units selected from the group consisting of units having the structure:
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein said polyamide comprises recurring units A and C in a ratio A:C of 50-95:50-5.
- 10. The composition of claim 8 wherein said polyamide comprises recurring units A, B and C in a ratio A:B:C of about 50-70:25-0:45-5.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein said halogen-containing organic compound is a bromine-containing organic compound and is selected from the group consisting of brominated polystyrene and polydibromostyrene.
- 12. A composition comprising a high temperature polyphthalamide and a flame retardant amount of a bromine-containing organic compound and up to about 5 weight percent, based on the weight of the composition of an anti-drip polymer comprising a polymer formed from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one carboxylic acid containing monomer.
- 13. The composition of claim 12 wherein the anti-drip polymer is present in an amount of up to 1.5 weight percent based on the weight of the composition.
- 14. The composition of claim 12 wherein the anti-drip polymer is present in an amount of less than 1 weight percent based on the weight of the composition.
- 15. A composition comprising 100 pbw partially aromatic polyamide and from about 0.5 to about 150 pbw of a bromine-containing organic compound and less than about 1 weight percent based on the total weight of the composition of an anti-drip polymer additive comprising a polymer formed from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one carboxylic acid containing monomer.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 wherein said polyamide formulation further comprises from about 10 to about 60 wt. % glass fiber, based on total weight of the formulation.
- 17. The composition of claim 15 wherein said polyamide is a copolymer comprising at least about 40 mole % recurring aliphatic diamine terephthalamide units having the structure
- 18. The composition of claim 15 wherein said polyamide is a copolymer comprising at least about 40 mole % recurring aliphatic diamine terephthalamide units having the structure
- 19. An injection-molded article comprising the composition of claim 1.
- 20. An extruded article comprising the composition of claim 1.
- 21. The composition of claim 1 wherein the anti-drip polymer has a melt flow index below 50.
- 22. The composition of claim 1 wherein the carboxylic acid comprising monomers in the anti-drip polymer is about 0.1 to about 25 weight percent based on the total weight of the anti-drip polymer.
- 23. The composition of claim 1 wherein the anti-drip polymer is prepared by a copolymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one carboxylic acid containing monomer.
- 24. A method for improving the anti-drip properties of a polyamide composition comprising adding to the polyamide composition an anti-drip effective amount of an anti-drip polymer additive comprising a polymer formed from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one carboxylic acid containing monomer.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein the polyamide composition contains a halogen-containing organic flame retardant compound.
