Claims
- 1. A flame retardant polyamide fiber, said fiber having incorporated therein about 0.01 to 2.9 weight percent zinc, about 0.002 to 0.58 weight percent molybdenum, and about 0.05 to 1.3 weight percent chlorine, said zinc, molybdenum and chlorine having been incorporated as compounds.
- 2. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the polyamide is nylon 6.
- 3. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the zinc and the molybdenum come from a compound selected from the group consisting of basic calcium zinc molybdate and a compound having the general formula
- yZnO.xMoO.sub.3
- where y is greater than x but not greater than 10x.
- 4. The fiber of claim 3 wherein from 0.2 to 5.0 weight percent of the compound is incorporated with the fiber.
- 5. The fiber of claim 4 wherein from 0.25 to 1 weight percent of the compound is incorporated therewith.
- 6. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the chlorine comes from incorporation of chlorinated polyethylene.
- 7. The fiber of claim 6 wherein the chlorinated polyethylene has a chlorine content of 20 to 45 weight percent, said chlorinated polyethylene being present in an amount of 0.2 to 5.0 weight percent in the fiber.
- 8. The fiber of claim 6 wherein the zinc and the molybdenum compounds are selected from the group consisting of basic calcium zinc molybdate and a compound having the general formula yZnO.xMoO.sub.3 where y is greater than x but not greater than 10x.
- 9. The fiber of claim 8 wherein the chlorinated polyethylene has a chlorine content of about 20 to 45 weight percent, said chlorinated polyethylene forming 0.2 to 5 weight percent on the weight of the fiber, and wherein said compound forms 0.2 to 5.0 weight percent of the fiber.
- 10. The fiber of claim 9 wherein the polyamide is nylon 6.
- 11. A flame-retardant pile carpet having a relatively pliable primary backing and a tufted surface, said surface being comprised of the fibers of claim 10.
- 12. A flame-retardant pile carpet having a relatively pliable primary backing and a tufted surface, said surface being comprised of the fibers of claim 1.
- 13. A polyamide composition, said composition comprising about 10 to 50 weight percent of a chlorinated polyethylene and a compound containing both zinc and molybdenum, the ratio of chlorinated polyethylene to the zinc and molybdenum-containing compound ranging from 0.5:1 to 3:1, and the remainder of said polyamide composition being a polyamide.
- 14. The composition of claim 13 wherein the ratio of chlorinated polyethylene to the zinc and molybdenum-containing compound ranges from 1.0:1 to 2.0:1.
- 15. The composition of claim 13 wherein the polyamide is nylon, and the zinc and molybdenum-containing compound has the general formula
- yZnO.xMoO.sub.3
- where y is greater than x but not greater than 10x.
- 16. The composition of claim 13 wherein the zinc and molybdenum-containing compound is basic calcium zinc molybdate.
- 17. The composition of claim 13 wherein the chlorinated polyethylene and the zinc and molybdenum-containing compound form 15 to 30 weight percent of the composition.
- 18. The composition of claim 13 wherein the polyamide is nylon 6.
