Claims
- 1. A flame retarded gel composition comprising:
- (i) an organopolysiloxane gel comprising repeat units of the structure ##STR9## wherein each R group is independently phenyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or fluoroalkyl, at least 40% of the R groups being phenyl; and
- (ii) an additive package mixed with the organopolysiloxane, in an amount between about 10 and about 60 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of organopolysiloxane, the additive package being
- (a) zinc oxide or antimony oxide or combinations thereof; and
- (b) a brominated compound having a molecular weight of at least 450 and a bromine content of at least 40 weight %.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the organopolysiloxane comprises repeat units of the structure ##STR10##
- 3. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the organopolysiloxane gel comprises approximately equal amounts of repeat units of the structures ##STR11##
- 4. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the additive package is a combination of zinc oxide and a brominated compound selected from the group consisting of ##STR12##
- 5. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the additive package is a combination of antimony oxide and a brominated compound selected from the group consisting of ##STR13##
- 6. A composition according to claim 1, having a Voland hardness of between about 2.0 and about 20.0 grams and an elongation of at least 100%.
- 7. A method for preparing a flame retarded gel composition, comprising the steps of:
- (i) providing a curable organopolysiloxane comprising repeat units of the structure ##STR14## wherein each R group is independently phenyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or fluoroalkyl, at least 40% of the R groups being phenyl;
- (ii) mixing an additive package with the organopolysiloxane or a component thereof to form a mixture of organopolysiloxane and additive package, the additive package being in an amount between about 10 and about 60 parts by weight of organopolysiloxane, the additive package being
- (a) zinc oxide or antimony oxide or combinations thereof; and
- (b) a brominated compound having a molecular weight of at least 450 and a bromine content of at least 40 weight %; and
- (iii) curing the mixture of organopolysiloxane in the mixture to form a gel.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, wherein the organopolysiloxane comprises repeat units of the structure ##STR15##
- 9. A method according to claim 7, wherein the organopolysiloxane comprises approximately equal amounts of repeat units of the structures ##STR16##
- 10. A method according to claim 7, wherein the additive package is a combination of zinc oxide and a brominated compound selected from the group consisting of ##STR17##
- 11. A method according to claim 7, wherein the additive package is a combination of antimony oxide and a brominated compound selected from the group consisting of ##STR18##
- 12. A method according to claim 7, wherein the organopolysiloxane is cured to have a Voland hardness of between about 2.0 and about 20.0 grams and an elongation of at least 100%.
