Claims
- 1. A fuel system component comprising a body portion and a flange member,
said body portion having an internal passageway, said flange member attached to an end of said body portion, said flange member having a width adapted to permit securing said fuel system component to another fuel system component by bonding, said flange member having a closed wall, said wall having an internal surface, said internal surface of said wall defining an internal aperture, said wall having an external surface, said wall having first and second ends, said first end of said wall fixed to said body portion, wherein said internal aperture and said internal passageway are in registry, and wherein said wall is made from material selected from the group of:
(a) multi-layer polymeric thermo-formable materials including at least one outer layer adjacent said external surface, at least one inner layer adjacent said internal surface and at least one layer of EVOH located between said outer and inner layers, and (b) pellet blends of nylon copolymers with adhesives.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the distance between said first and second ends is less than the minimum width of the flange member.
- 3. The flange member of claim 2, wherein said flange member is made from a pellet blend of nylon co-polymer and adhesive.
- 4. The fuel system component of claim 2, said wall having at least a first polymeric layer, a second polymeric layer and a barrier layer located between said first and second polymeric layers,
and wherein said barrier layer surrounds said internal aperture and extends from said first end to said second end, and wherein said barrier layer is adapted to substantially inhibit passage of hydrocarbon vapour from hydrocarbon fuel through said wall from said internal surface to said external surface.
- 5. A process for making a fuel system component having a body portion and a flange member having a barrier layer for inhibiting hydrocarbon vapour flow through comprising:
forming said body portion, said body portion having an internal passageway, forming a multi-layer parison, said parison comprising at least a first polymeric layer, a second polymeric layer and said barrier layer wherein said barrier layer is between said first and second layers, expanding said parison to form a tube, having an axis, a width and a wall, said first and second polymeric layers, and said barrier layer extending axially of said tube, said wall defining an internal aperture extending axially along said tube and cutting said tube generally transversely to said axis to form a flange member wherein said flange member has first and second ends and the distance between said first and second ends is less than the width of said tube and attaching one end of said flange member to said body portion with said internal aperture in registry with said internal passageway.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein said parison is expanded by applying a vacuum pressure to the external surface of said parison.
- 7. A process for making a fuel system component having a body portion and a flange member having a barrier for inhibiting hydrocarbon vapour flow-through comprising, forming said body portion,
said body portion having an internal passageway, forming a parison, said parison comprising a barrier for inhibiting hydrocarbon vapour flow-through, expanding said parison to form a tube having an axis, a width and a wall, said wall defining an internal aperture extending axially along said tube, and cutting said tube transversely to said axis to form a flange member, wherein said flange member has first and second ends and the distance between said first and second ends is less than the width of said tube and, attaching one end of said flange member to said body portion with said internal aperture in registry with said internal passageway.
