Claims
- 1. A machine for forming a post reinforced panel out of portions of a flat preformed blank of a paperboard material, the blank having a first score line defining a junction between wall and flap areas of the material, the flap having a plurality of at least three portions defined by a plurality of at least two score lines parallel to the first score line, said machine comprising:
- a framework;
- shoe means mounted on said framework for supporting the wall area of a blank during forming of the flap area of the blank into a reinforcing post,
- said shoe means having an outer edge beyond which the flap area of a flat blank extends when the blank occupies a static indexed position relative to said shoe means;
- indexing means mounted on said framework for retaining a blank in said static indexed positon such that the first score line is in parallel registration with said outer edge of said shoe means;
- a mandrel means mounted on said framework that defines the post configuration into which the portions of the flap are to be formed, said mandrel means having a long axis disposed parallel to said outer edge of said shoe means,
- said mandrel defining a first edge in spaced parallel superposition adjacent to said outer edge of said shoe means such that the flap can be folded on the first score line about said first edge,
- said mandrel means defining an apex parallel to said first edge about which apex the flap can be folded on a second score line of the flap; and
- a flap folding means mounted on said framework in operative opposition to said shoe means and to said mandrel means to fold first and second portions of the flap around outside and inside faces of said mandrel means and to fold second and third portions of the flap reversely relative to one another and in opposition to said shoe means and mandrel means to place the third portion in laminar relation against the wall area of the end panel;
- said flap folding means having an elongate platen of a length substantially corresponding to the length of the flap and oriented parallel to said shoe means and mandrel means,
- said flap folding means having an axis of oscillation between retracted and extended positions of said platen that is parallel to said platen, said shoe means and mandrel means,
- said platen when in said retracted position being positioned sidewardly beyond said shoe means in confronting relationship to the flap of a blank occupying said static indexed position in said shoe means,
- said flap folding means including means to swing said platen out of said retracted position through the plane of a flat blank in said indexed position on said shoe means and into said extended position,
- said platen in said extended position coming into registration with said shoe means to place the third portion of the flap into laminar relation to the the wall area of the end panel.
- 2. The machine of claim 1 in which:
- said mandrel means comprises a rigidly supported cantilevered bar of triangular cross section.
- 3. The machine of claim 2 in which:
- said machine has a second cantilevered mandrel of triangular cross sectional configuration that is parallel to and laterally spaced apart from said first mentioned mandrel means;
- said flap folding means also including a means for sequentially folding fourth, fifth and sixth portions of the flap along fourth, fifth and sixth scorelines, respectively, of the flap such that the fourth and fifth portions engage opposite faces of said second mandrel while the third portion is pressed into laminar relation to the wall area of the blank to define a rib.
- 4. The machine of claim 3 in which said flap folding means comprises:
- a first frame mounted for oscillation inward and outward on an axis parallel to said mandrel means;
- second and third frames movably mounted on said first frame for oscillatory relative thereto and relative to each other;
- said third frame having a platen mounted on an inner end thereof, said pair of platens being disposed in parallel relation to one another; and
- motion change means between said first frame and each of said second and third frames to change oscillatory movement of said first frame into non-linear movement of said platens of said second and third frames.
- 5. The machine of claim 4 in which:
- said motion change means comprises a parallel linkage system that includes said first frame with each of said second and third frames;
- each of said linkage systems having a means to vary the length of a leg thereof in a phased relationship with oscillatory movement of said first frame and with the other linkage system.
- 6. The machine of claim 4 in which said means to vary the length of a leg of said linkage systems comprises a fluid powered cylinder having an axially reciprocable piston rod.
- 7. The machine of claim 1 in which:
- said mandrel means comprises a spaced coplanar pair of thin sheets of a stiff material.
- 8. The machine of claim 1 in which said flap folding means comprises:
- a first frame having an inner end mounted on said framework for movement of an outer end of said first frame inward and outward relative to said mandrel means about said axis paralle to said mandrel means; and
- motion change means acting between said platen and said frame to change movement of said first frame into non-linear movement of said platen.
- 9. The machine of claim 8 in which:
- said motion change means comprises a second frame movably mounted on said outer end of said first mentioned frame for oscillatory movement relative thereto;
- said platen being mounted on an inwardly projecting end of said second frame.
- 10. The machine of claim 9 in which:
- said platen is rigidly secured to said second frame.
- 11. The machine of claim 9 in which:
- said platen is yieldably biased and positioned on said second frame for contact with the third scoreline of the flap during a terminal phase of said inward movement of said first frame;
- said second frame having stop means to limit deflection of said platen relative to said second frame in response to contact of said platen with the third scoreline.
- 12. A mechanism for forming a corner post around an alongate fixed mandrel of a paperboard box forming machine comprising:
- a support for mounting said mechanism in the machine in spaced apart operative opposite to the mandrel;
- a trunnion having an inner end pivotally mounted on said support for reciprocation of an outer end of said trunnion on a first axis;
- a first powered means operatively interconnected between said support and said trunnion for reciprocating said outer end of said trunnion through an arc relative to said support;
- a platen support means having an inner end pivotally mounted on said outer end of said trunnion on a second axis substantially parallel to said first axis for reciprocation of an outer end of said platen support means relative to said trunnion;
- a platen mounted on said outer end of said platen support means having an axis in parallel spaced relation to said second axis and in parallel operative opposition to the mandrel; and
- a second powered means operatively interconnected between said trunnion and said platen support means for reciprocating said platen support means and said platen relative to said trunnion,
- said second powered means being actuatable independently of actuation of said first powered means whereby to effect movement of said platen relation to said trunnion and the mandrel independently of reciprocatory movement of said trunnion.
- 13. The mechanism of claim 12 in which:
- a pressure plate is rigidly secured to said trunnion substantially parallel to and in a position adjacent to said second axis; said platen comprising a flat face portion parallel to said pressure plate that comes into opposition to said pressure plate upon an actuation of said second powered means subsequent to an actuation of said first powered means in a mode to effect movement of said platen from a retracted position thereof to an extended position thereof.
- 14. The mechanism of claim 12 in which:
- said platen and said platen support means are interconnected by a means permitting limited relative displacement therebetween, said last mentioned means including means resiliently opposing such displacement.
- 15. The mechanism of claim 12 in which:
- said platen support means comprises a bell crank arm supporting said platen at a radially outer end of said arm;
- said second powered means comprising a rack and pinion mechanism.
- 16. The mechanism of claim 12 in which:
- said second powered means comprises a parallel linkage system that includes said trunnion as a link thereof, said linkage system having another link whose length is variable as a function of actuation of said second powered means whereby to effect said reciprocating of said platen support means.
- 17. In a machine for forming a paperboard box having a post reinforced end panel out of a flat blank of the paperboard material, the blank having a first scoreline between flat and end panel areas of the material, the flap having second and third scorelines parallel to the first scoreline to define three portions of the flap comprising first and second portions and a third laminator tab portion, the apparatus comprising:
- feed means in said machine oriented to be engageable with the end panel area of a blank for moving successive ones of the blanks through the machine along a straight line path in parallel alignment with the scorelines of the blank;
- an elongate mandrel means for defining the post configuration into which the first and second portions of the flap are to be formed, said mandrel means having an effective length which is substantially the same as the length of the scorelines of the blank;
- means for mounting said mandrel means in said machine in parallel alignment with said path of said feed means such that a lower edge of said mandrel means is supported in close parallel superposition to the first scoreline of a blank occupying a stationary indexed position relative to said mandrel means while maintaining an unobstructed passage for entry of a flat blank into an indexed position and exit of a formed blank out of the indexed position along said straight line path parallel to said mandrel means;
- indexing means to support a flat box blank in said stationary indexed position relative to said mandrel means such that the flap of a flat blank extends laterally outwardly beyond said feed means and said mandrel means while maintaining said close parallel superposition of said lower edge of said mandrel means to the first scoreline of the blank; and
- a flap folding means mounted in a location in said machine on that side of the plane of said feed means that is opposite to said mandrel means for folding the first and second portions of a flap of the flat box blank around outside and inside faces, respectively, of said mandrel means and folding the third portion into laminar relation to the panel area of the blank in reponse to an extension of said flap folding means,
- said flap folding means having an elongate platen of a length substantially corresponding to the length of the flap and oriented parallel to said shoe means and mandrel means,
- said flap folding means having an axis of oscillation between retracted and extended positions of said platen that is parallel to said platen and said mandrel means,
- said platen when in said retracted position being positioned sidewardly beyond said mandrel means on that side of the plane of said feed means that is opposite to said mandrel means and in confronting relationship to the flap of a flat blank occupying said stationary indexed position.
- 18. The machine of claim 17 in which:
- said mandrel means comprises an aligned pair of mandrel fingers.
- 19. The machine of claim 18 in which:
- said means for mounting said mandrel means has a means to suspend a downstream one of said pair of fingers in place during actuation of said flap folding mechanism that is operable to retract said downstream finger after the flap has been folded therearound.
- 20. The machine of claim 19 in which:
- said last mentioned means comprises a bracket means suspending said downstream finger for movement on two different axes, one of which axes effects initial movement of said downstream finger in a downstream direction, the other of which axes effects movement of said downstream finger out of interfering alignment with a flap previously formed therearound.
- 21. The machine of claim 20 in which:
- said bracket means is connected to a pair of fluid powered cylinders for effecting movement of said downstream finger on each of said axes.
- 22. The machine of claim 21 in which:
- said bracket means has means normally biasing said downstream finger in the upstream direction, one of said fluid powered cylinders being mounted on said bracket and being adapted to be unidirectionally operable in opposition to said biasing means for effecting movement of said downstream finger in the downstream direction;
- said bracket means also mounting the other of said fluid powered cylinders, said other cylinder being bi-directionally operable to effect retraction and return of said downstream finger on the other of said axes.
- 23. The machine of claim 22 in which:
- said pair of cylinders are under the control of a single valve having a normally open port and a normally closed port,
- said normally closed port being arranged in series with the active side of said uni-directionally acting cylinder, a time delay valve and one side of said bi-directionally operable cylinder being in communication with said normally open port.
- 24. The machine of claim 17 in which:
- said mandrel means comprises a cantilevered rigidly supported bar of triangular cross-section.
