Claims
- 1. A personal protection device comprising:(a) a flat, substantially elliptical, central panel which does not have the shape of a regular ellipse; (b) a flat first panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the first panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; and (c) a flat second panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the second panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; at least one of the center, first and second panels comprising filter media; wherein the device can be folded flat for storage with the first and second panels in at least partial face-to-face contact with a common surface of the central panel and, during use, is capable of forming, over the nose and mouth of the wearer, a cup-shaped air chamber having a face-contacting periphery.
- 2. A personal protection device as claimed in claim 1, in which the device can be folded flat for storage by turning the first and second panels inwards along the respective fold-line seam, weld or bond joining each panel with the central panel, whereby the inward- facing surfaces of the first and second panels are in at least partial face-to-face contact with an inward-facing surface of the central panel.
- 3. The personal protection device of claim 1 wherein the central panel is about 160 to 220 mm wide and about 30 to 110 mm high.
- 4. The personal protection device of claim 1 wherein the first panel is substantially elliptical in shape.
- 5. The personal protection device of claim 4 wherein the first panel is about 160 to 220 mm wide and about 30 to 110 mm high.
- 6. The personal protection device of claim 4 wherein the second panel is substantially elliptical in shape.
- 7. The personal protection device of claim 6 wherein the second panel is about 160 to 220 mm wide and about 30 to 110 mm high.
- 8. The personal protection device of claim 1 wherein the device has a multilayer construction.
- 9. The personal protection device of claim 8 wherein at least one layer comprises melt blown microfibers.
- 10. The personal protection device of claim 9 wherein the melt blown microfibers are electrically charged.
- 11. The personal protection device of claim 9 wherein the melt blown microfiber layer is covered by an outer cover spunbond layer.
- 12. The personal protection device of claim 9 wherein the melt blown microfiber layer is covered by an inner cover spunbond layer.
- 13. The personal protection device of claim 8 wherein at least the central panel has a stiffening layer.
- 14. The personal protection device of claim 9 further comprising a nose clip in the first panel.
- 15. The personal protection device of claim 1 further comprising a headband attachment.
- 16. The personal protection device of claim 1 further comprising a headband.
- 17. The personal protection device of claim 16 wherein the headband comprises a stretch activated, elastomeric composite material.
- 18. A personal protection device comprising:(a) a flat, substantially elliptical, central panel which does not have the shape of a regular ellipse; (b) a flat first panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld, or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the first panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; and (c) a flat second panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the second panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; at least one of the center, first and second panels comprising filter media; wherein the device can be folded flat for storage with the first and second panels in at least partial face-to-face contact with a common surface of the central panel and, during use, is capable of forming, over the nose and mouth of the wearer, a cup-shaped air chamber having a face-contacting periphery.
- 19. A personal protection device comprising:(a) a flat, substantially elliptical, central panel; (b) a flat first panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam weld, or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the first panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; (c) a flat second panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the second panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; at least one of the center, first and second panels comprising filter media; and (d) an exhalation valve wherein the device can be folded for storage with the first and second panels in at least partial face-to-face contact with a common surface of the central panel and, during use, is capable of forming, over the nose and mouth of the wearer, a cup-shaped air chamber having a face-contacting periphery.
- 20. The personal protection device of claim 19 wherein the exhalation valve is located in the central panel.
- 21. A personal protection device comprising:(a) a flat, substantially elliptical, central panel; (b) a flat first panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the first panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel: (c) a flat second panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the second panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; at least one of the center, first and second panels comprising filter media; and (d) a face shield; wherein the device can be folded flat for storage with the first and second panels in at least partial face-to-face contact with a common surface of the central panel and, during use, is capable of forming, over the nose and mouth of the wearer, a cup-shaped air chamber having a face-contacting periphery.
- 22. A personal protection device comprising:(a) a flat, substantially elliptical, central panel; (b) a flat first panel joined to the central panel though a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the first panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; (c) a flat second panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the second panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; at least one of the center, first and second panels comprising filter media; and (d) a face seal; wherein the device can be folded flat for storage with the first and second panels in at least partial face-to-face contact with a common surface of the central panel and, during use, is capable of forming, over the nose and mouth of the wearer, a cup-shaped air chamber having a face-contacting periphery.
- 23. A personal protection device comprising:(a) a flat, substantially elliptical, central panel; (b) a flat first panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the first panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; (c) a flat second panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam weld, or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the second panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; at least one of the center, first and second panels comprising filter media; and (d) a neck cover; wherein the device can be folded flat for storage with the first and second panels in at least partial face-to-face contact with a common surface of the central panel and, during use, is capable of forming, over the nose and mouth of the wearer, a cup-shaped air chamber having a face-contacting periphery.
- 24. A process for preparing personal respiratory protection devices comprising forming a first elliptical sheet of filter media having two edges, forming a second sheet of filter media having two edges, at least one side of each sheet having a common shape, bonding the common shaped edges, folding the unbonded edge of said second sheet toward the bonded edge, forming a third sheet of filter media having two edges, at least one edge of which has a common shape with the unbonded edge of said first sheet, placing said third sheet on said second sheet and bonding the common shaped edges of said first and third sheet.
- 25. A personal respiratory protection device comprising:(a) a flat, non-rectangular central panel; (b) a flat first panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the first panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; and (c) a flat second panel joined to the central panel through a fold-line, seam, weld or bond, the fold-line, seam, weld or bond of the second panel being substantially coextensive with an edge of the central panel; at least one of the center, first and second panels comprising filter media; wherein at least one or the central, first and second panels comprises filter media, the device can be folded flat for storage with the first and second panels in at least partial face-to-face contact with a common surface of the central panel, and when the device is unfolded for use the central, first and second panels form over the nose and mouth of a wearer a cup-shaped air filtration chamber having a face-contacting periphery.
- 26. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 25, wherein the device can be folded flat for storage by turning the first and second panels inwards along the respective fold-line seam, weld or bond joining each panel with the central panel, whereby the inward- facing surfaces of the first and second panels are in at least partial face-to-face contact with an inward-facing surface of the central panel.
- 27. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 25, wherein, during use, unjoined edges of the central, first, and second panels contact the nose, cheeks and chin of the wearer.
- 28. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 25 wherein at least one of the central, first and second panels has a multilayer construction.
- 29. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 28 wherein at least one layer comprises melt blown microfiber filter media.
- 30. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 29 wherein the melt blown microfiber filter media is electrically charged.
- 31. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 29 wherein the layer comprising melt blown microfiber filter media is covered by an outer cover spunbond layer.
- 32. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 29 wherein the layer comprising melt blown microfiber filter media is covered by an inner cover spunbond layer.
- 33. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 29 wherein at least the central panel has a multilayer construction and comprises a stiffening layer.
- 34. The personal respiratory protection device of claim 25 further comprising an exhalation valve in the central panel and a nose clip in the first panel.
