Claims
- 1. A method of making battery separators for planar batteries comprising:
- disposing a hot melt plastic grid on a movable, porous conveyor screen, said grid having a plurality of generally rectangular openings thereon;
- depositing a fluid-borne stream of textile-length fibers thereon;
- causing more than 80 percent of the fibers in said stream to locate within said openings in a manner that only fibers lying directly adjacent said grid are oriented substantially parallel with the axis of said grid while the remaining fibers therein are disposed in random orientation therein;
- simultaneously causing a minority of fibers in said stream to locate on said grid, said minority of fibers being oriented in a direction substantially normal to the axis of said grid;
- heating said grid with the thusly disposed fibers thereon, so as to anchor said fibers to said grid; and,
- cutting said grid into individual battery separator units for subsequent usage.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said fluid-borne stream of fibers comprise a blend of thermoplastic and non-thermoplastic fibers, said thermoplastic fibers comprising at least 10% of the total fibers in said stream.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said fluid-borne stream of fibers consists of a 50%--50% blend of fibers of a polymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride and acrylic fibers.
