Claims
- 1. A display device comprising a luminescent screen and means for selectively energizing predetermined areas of said screen, said means comprising at least one electron transport duct having a plurality of exit apertures, means for promoting propagation of electrons within the at least one transport duct, selection means for selectively extracting electrons from the exit apertures, and apertured spacer means disposed between the selection means and the luminescent screen for passing the extracted electrons to said screen under the influence of an accelerating potential, said spacer means including means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient between said selection means and said screen.
- 2. A display device as in claim 1 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer means and the selection means and having a resistance which is much larger than the contacting selection means material.
- 3. A display device as in claim 2 where the intermediate material has a resistance which is much smaller than the resistance of the apertured spacer means material.
- 4. A display device as in claim 1, 2 or 3 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer means and the screen and which has a resistance that is much smaller than the resistance of the intermediate material disposed between the spacer means and the selection means.
- 5. A display device as in claim 3 where the intermediate material comprises a layer disposed on the spacer means.
- 6. A display device as in claim 2 where the intermediate material comprises insulating material.
- 7. A display device as in claim 6 where the intermediate material substantially fills a volume between facing surfaces of the spacer means and the selection means.
- 8. A display device as in claim 6 where the intermediate material comprises polyimide.
- 9. A display device as in claim 1 where the selection means includes a surface bearing electrodes arranged in a predefined pattern and where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient comprises a conductive layer disposed on a surface of the spacer means in substantially the same pattern for electrical contact with said electrodes.
- 10. A display device as in claim 1 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer means and the screen and having a resistance which is much smaller than resistance of the spacer means material.
- 11. A display device comprising a luminescent screen and means for selectively energizing predetermined areas of said screen, said means comprising:
- a. an arrangement of electron transport ducts, each having a plurality of exit apertures;
- b. means for promoting propagation of electrons within the ducts by recurrent electron interactions with secondary emission material;
- c. selection means for selectively extracting electrons from the exit apertures and including an apertured selection plate of insulating material bearing electrodes arranged in a predefined pattern on a side of the plate facing the screen;
- d. spacer means disposed between the apertured plate and the screen and including apertures in communication with respective ones of the apertures in the selection plate and means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient between said conductive pattern of electrodes and said screen.
- 12. A display device as in claim 11 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer means and the electrodes and having a resistance which is much larger than the contacting electrode material.
- 13. A display device as in claim 12 where the intermediate material has a resistance which is much smaller than the resistance of the apertured selection plate material.
- 14. A display device as in claim 11, 12 or 13 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer means and the screen and which has a resistance that is much smaller than the resistance of the intermediate material disposed between the spacer means and the selection means.
- 15. A display device as in claim 13 where the intermediate material comprises a layer disposed on the spacer means.
- 16. A display device as in claim 12 where the intermediate material comprises insulating material.
- 17. A display device as in claim 16 where the intermediate material substantially fills a volume between facing surfaces of the spacer means and the selection means.
- 18. A display device as in claim 16 where the intermediate material comprises polyimide.
- 19. A display device as in claim 11 where the selection means includes a surface bearing electrodes arranged in a predefined pattern and where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient comprises a conductive layer disposed on a surface of the spacer means in substantially said predefined pattern for electrical contact with said electrodes.
- 20. A display device as in claim 11 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer means and the screen and having a resistance which is much smaller than the spacer means material.
- 21. A display device comprising a vacuum-tight enclosure including a face plate supporting a luminescent screen, a plurality of juxtaposed electron propagation ducts, each having a wall with exit apertures extending substantially parallel to the face plate, an addressing system for selectively extracting electrons from the exit apertures, and a spacer plate having apertures communicating with the exit apertures, said spacer plate comprising an insulating material and including means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient between the addressing system and the screen upon the application of different voltages to said addressing system and said screen.
- 22. A display device as in claim 21 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer plate and the addressing system and having a resistance which is much larger than the contacting addressing system material.
- 23. A display device as in claim 22 where the intermediate material has a resistance which is much smaller than the resistance of the spacer plate material.
- 24. A display device as in claim 21, 22 or 23 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer plate and the screen and which has a resistance that is much smaller than the resistance of the intermediate material disposed between the spacer plate and the addressing system.
- 25. A display device as in claim 23 where the intermediate material comprises a layer disposed on the spacer plate.
- 26. A display device as in claim 22 where the intermediate material comprises insulating material.
- 27. A display device as in claim 26 where the intermediate material substantially fills a volume between facing surfaces of the spacer plate and the addressing system.
- 28. A display device as in claim 26 where the intermediate material comprises polyimide.
- 29. A display device as in claim 21 where the addressing system includes a surface bearing electrodes arranged in a predefined pattern and where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient comprises a conductive layer disposed on a surface of the spacer plate in substantially the same pattern for electrical contact with said electrodes.
- 30. A display device as in claim 21 where the means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient includes an intermediate material disposed between and in contact with the spacer plate and the screen and having a resistance which is much smaller than the resistance of the spacer plate material.
- 31. A flat panel display device comprising:
- a. a face plate bearing a luminescent screen;
- b. a back plate;
- c. means connecting the back plate to the face plate to form a sealed enclosure;
- d. means for producing electrons;
- e. a selection structure including a plurality of apertured plates situated within the enclosure between the back plate and the face plate and having means for establishing a predetermined potential gradient for effecting propagation of the electrons through selected ones of the apertures and toward the screen, one of said apertured plates comprising a spacer plate having a first plurality of surface areas disposed adjacent a corresponding second plurality of surface areas of a second plate, one of said first and second pluralities of surface areas being coated with a material for ensuring contact with the other of said pluralities of surface areas to maintain said predetermined potential gradient despite incomplete abutment of the adjacent surface areas.
