Claims
- 1. As a new composition of matter a soluble coffee material having added thereto a minor, but flavor modifying amount of a compound selected from the group of compounds having the general formula: ##SPC3##
- wherein R is hydrogen or methyl or ethyl, at least one of the R's being methyl or ethyl.
- 2. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is alpha-methyl-naphthalene.
- 3. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is beta-methyl-naphthalene.
- 4. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is beta-ethyl-naphthalene.
- 5. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 1,2-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 6. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 1,3-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 7. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 1,4-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 8. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 1,5-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 9. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 1,6-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 10. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 2,3-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 11. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 2,6-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 12. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 1,3,7-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 13. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound of 2,3,5-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 14. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 2,3,6-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 15. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is alpha-ethyl-naphthalene.
- 16. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 1,7-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 17. The soluble coffee of claim 1 wherein the added compound is 2,7-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 18. A process for the alteration of the natural flavor of soluble coffee material which comprises adding thereto a minor, but flavor-modifying amount of a compound selected from the group of compounds having the general formula: ##SPC4##
- wherein R is hydrogen or methyl or ethyl, at least one of the R's being methyl or ethyl.
- 19. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is alpha-methyl-naphthalene.
- 20. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is beta-methyl-naphthalene.
- 21. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is beta-ethyl-naphthalene.
- 22. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 1,2-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 23. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 1,3-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 24. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 1,4-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 25. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 1,5-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 26. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 1,6-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 27. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 2,3-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 28. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 2,6-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 29. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 1,3,7-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 30. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 2,3,5-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 31. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 2,3,6-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 32. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is alpha-ethyl-naphthalene.
- 33. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 1,7-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 34. The process of claim 18 wherein the added compound is 2,7-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 35. A composition selected from the group consisting of foodstuffs and beverages to which has been added an effective flavor-modifying amount of a compound selected from the group of compounds having the general formula: ##SPC5##
- wherein R is hydrogen or methyl or ethyl, at least one of the R's being methyl or ethyl.
- 36. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is alpha-methyl-naphthalene.
- 37. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is beta-methyl-naphthalene.
- 38. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is beta-ethyl-naphthalene.
- 39. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 1,2-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 40. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 1,3-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 41. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 1,4-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 42. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 1,5-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 43. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 1,6-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 44. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 2,3-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 45. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 2,6-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 46. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 1,3,7-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 47. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 2,3,5-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 48. The composition of clam 35 wherein the added compound is 2,3,6-trimethyl-naphthalene.
- 49. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is alpha-ethyl-naphthalene.
- 50. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 1,7-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 51. The composition of claim 35 wherein the added compound is 2,7-dimethyl-naphthalene.
- 52. A process for the modification of the flavor of a composition selected from the group consisting of foodstuffs and beverages which comprises adding thereto a minor, but flavor-modifying amount of a compound selected from those represented by the general formula: ##SPC6##
- wherein R is hydrogen or methyl or ethyl, at least one of the R's being methyl or ethyl.
- 53. The process of claim 52 wherein the added compound is alpha-methyl-naphthalene.
