Claims
- 1. A process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of a foodstuff or chewing gum comprising the step of adding to a foodstuff base or chewing gum base from 0.01 parts per million up to about 100 parts per million based on total composition of a composition of matter containing a major proportion of at least one compound defined according to the structure: ##STR366## wherein the dashed line represents a carbon-carbon single bond or a carbon-carbon double bond; wherein each of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 represents hydrogen or methyl with the proviso that one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 is methyl and each of the other of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 is hydrogen; and with the further proviso that R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are not both methyl; and wherein R.sub.5 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl produced by the process of reacting at least one methyl cyclopentadiene defined according to the structure: ##STR367## with an alkyl acrylate derivative defined according to the structure: ##STR368## in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst at a temperature in the range of 0.degree.-50.degree. C. or in the absence of a catalyst at a temperature in the range of 170.degree.-250.degree. C., and Lewis acid catalyst being an alkyl aluminum dihalide or a dialkyl aluminum halide having the formula: R.sub.m ' AlCl.sub.n wherein R' is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl and the sum, m+n, equals 3; with m being one or two and n being one to two.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the resultant reaction product is further reacted with hydrogen at a pressure of from about 20 psig up to about 2000 psig in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of Raney nickel, palladium supported on carbon, palladium supported on calcium carbonate, palladium supported on barium sulfate and platinum and the dashed line is a carbon-carbon single bond.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the dashed line is a carbon-carbon double bond and R.sub.5 is methyl.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the dashed line is a carbon-carbon double bond and R.sub.5 is ethyl.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the dashed line is a carbon-carbon double bond and R.sub.1 is hydrogen and R.sub.2 is methyl or R.sub.2 is methyl and R.sub.1 is hydrogen and R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are each hydrogen and R.sub.5 is ethyl.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein dashed line is a carbon-carbon double bond and R.sub.5 is n butyl.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the dashed line is a carbon-carbon single bond and R.sub.5 is ethyl.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the dashed line is a carbon-carbon double bond and R.sub.5 is isopropyl.
