Claims
- 1. A biregional carbonaceous fiber derived from a biregional precursor fiber, wherein said biregional fiber comprises an inner region of a thermoplastic polymeric composition and an outer region of a carbonaceous sheath, said biregional fiber having a coating of a water insoluble hydrophobic composition.
- 2. The fiber of claim 1, wherein said hydrophobic composition comprises a settable or curable composition selected from high molecular weight waxes, haloaliphatic resins, thermoset and thermoplastic resins, ionomers, silicone products, and polysiloxanes.
- 3. The fiber of claim 1, wherein said inner thermoplastic core region and said outer carbonaceous sheath region are continuous and do not present an intermediate boundary or discontinuity between the regions.
- 4. A fiber assembly comprising a multiplicity of biregional carbonaceous fibers in the form of a wool like fluff, batt, felt or web, wherein said biregional fibers are derived from biregional precursor fibers, each said biregional carbonaceous fiber comprising an inner region of a thermoplastic polymeric composition and an outer region of a carbonaceous sheath, said fiber assembly having a coating of a water insoluble hydrophobic composition.
- 5. The fiber assembly of claim 4, wherein said hydrophobic composition comprises a settable or curable composition selected from high molecular weight waxes, haloaliphatic resins, thermoset and thermoplastic resins, ionomers, silicone products, and polysiloxanes.
- 6. The fiber assembly of claim 4, wherein said hydrophobic composition comprises an organosilicone polymer derived from the hydrolyzed partial condensation product of a compound selected from the group consisting of R.sub.x Si(OR').sub.4-x and R.sub.x Si(OOR').sub.4-x, wherein R is an organic radical and R' is a lower alkyl or phenyl radical, and x is at least 1 and less than 4.
- 7. The fiber assembly of claim 4, wherein said organosilicone polymer is present in said assembly in an amount of from 0.5 to 90% by weight.
