Claims
- 1. A flexible article comprising at least one layer of an elastomer and having a wearer contacting surface, wherein a botanical extract having a polysaccharide therein is incorporated into a layer of the elastomer of the article.
- 2. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the elastomer is suspended into an emulsion; and wherein the botanical extract is characterized by stabilizing the emulsion of the elastomer, by providing thixotropic properties that modify the rheology of the elastomer emulsion, by reducing surface tension, by lowering the modulus of the finished article, by balancing moisture homeostasis, by preventing unwanted oxidation during manufacturing, and by improving the shelf life of the finished article.
- 3. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the botanical extract contains therapeutic components having one or more of wound healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, analgesic, and anti-aging properties.
- 4. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract.
- 5. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the botanical extract is a Nopal extract.
- 6. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the botanical extract is a mixture of an Aloe vera extract and a Nopal extract.
- 7. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the botanical extract is selected from an extract of Aloe vera, Nopal, okra, kelp, tamarind, psyllium, carrageenan, chia, flax, carob, guar, xanthan, konjac, cassia, tara, karaya, ghatti, tragacanth, glucomannan, galactomannan, a laboratory produced polysaccharide, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the elastomer is an elastomer that can be suspended into an emulsion and wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble or miscible in the emulsion.
- 9. The article as defined in claim 8, wherein the elastomer is an elastomer selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, and an acrylate-based hydrogel, any other elastomer that can be suspended into an emulsion, and mixtures thereof.
- 10. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the elastomer is an elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible in a solution or a plastisol and wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble, and/or miscible in the same, and mixtures thereof.
- 11. The article as defined in claim 10, wherein the elastomer is selected from the group consisting of a polyvinyl chloride, a polyurethane, an acrylate-based hydrogel, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, any other elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible into the solution, or the plastisol, wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble or miscible in the solution or the plastisol, and mixtures thereof.
- 12. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is a glove.
- 13. The article as defined in claim 12, wherein the glove is a disposable glove or a reusable glove.
- 14. The article as defined in claim 12, wherein the glove includes an examination glove, a surgical glove, an industrial glove, a protective glove or a household glove.
- 15. The article as defined in claim 12, wherein the glove is a single layer glove, a bilaminar glove (two layer) or a multi-layer glove.
- 16. The article as defined in claim 15, wherein the glove is the single layer glove and the elastomer includes one or more of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, and an acrylate-based hydrogel, any other elastomer that can be suspended into an emulsion, and mixtures thereof; and wherein the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract or a Nopal extract, or both.
- 17. The article as defined in claim 15, wherein the glove is the bilaminar glove having a first layer having an outer surface, and a second layer having the wearer contacting surface, wherein the first layer and the second layer are of a similar or a different elastomer and wherein the botanical extract is incorporated into at least one layer of the glove; wherein for the layer of the glove into which the botanical extract is incorporated, the elastomer selected is any elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible into an emulsion, a solution or a plastisol, wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the same emulsion, solution or plastisol, and mixtures thereof.
- 18. The article as defined in claim 17, wherein the elastomer for the layer of the glove into which the botanical extract is incorporated is an elastomer selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, an acrylate-based hydrogel, a polyvinyl chloride, any elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible into an emulsion, a solution or a plastisol wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the same emulsion, solution or plastisol, and mixtures thereof; and wherein the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract or a Nopal extract or both.
- 19. The article as defined in claim 18, wherein the elastomer for the first layer is polyvinyl chloride and the elastomer for the second layer is polyurethane and/or silicone; and wherein the botanical extract is incorporated into the second layer of the glove.
- 20. The article as defined in claim 15, wherein the glove is the multi-layer glove having a first layer having an outer surface, a layer having the wearer contacting surface and one or more glove layers disposed between the first layer and the layer having the wearer contacting surface; wherein the botanical extract is incorporated in at least one layer of the glove.
- 21. The article as defined in claim 20, wherein the elastomer for the layer of the glove into which the botanical extract is incorporated is an elastomer selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, an acrylate-based hydrogel, a polyvinyl chloride, any elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible into an emulsion, a solution or a plastisol wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the same emulsion, solution or plastisol; and mixtures thereof, and wherein the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract or a Nopal extract or both.
- 22. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is a catheter or a stent or an incontinence device having a sheath or sheath type construction.
- 23. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is a condom or a cervical cap or a diaphragm.
- 24. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is a dental dam.
- 25. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is an elastomer sheet.
- 26. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is a balloon for use in a medical procedure.
- 27. The article as defined in claim 26, wherein the balloon is used with a balloon catheter, a urinary catheter, rectal catheter, an endotracheal tube, a feeding tube, or a cardiac catheter.
- 28. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is a sheath or a tube for use with a medical device.
- 29. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article is a finger cot.
- 30. The article as defined in claim 1, wherein the article further comprises a non-Aloe vera coating material applied to at least the wearer contacting surface, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material contains a non-Aloe vera botanical extract having a polysaccharide therein.
- 31. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material has moisture regulating properties and has lubricating and thixotropic properties of a liquid biopolymer and contains a therapeutic component; wherein the therapeutic component imparts one or more of wound healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, analgesic, and anti-aging properties.
- 32. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe vera botanical extract is selected from an extract of Nopal, okra, kelp, tamarind, psyllium, carrageenan, chia, flax, carob, guar, xanthan, konjac, cassia, tara, karaya, ghatti, tragacanth, glucomannan, galactomannan, a non-Aloe vera laboratory produced polysaccharide, and mixtures thereof.
- 33. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material also contains an additive including one or more of Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, jojoba, rose hips, tea tree oil, flax seed oil, palm oil, acetylsalicylic acid and mixtures, thereof.
- 34. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material contains a Nopal extract.
- 35. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material also contains Vitamin E.
- 36. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe vera extract is in a quantity sufficient to reduce rubber or plastic blocking and to provide adequate lubricity when the article is dry donned.
- 37. The article as defined in claim 30 wherein the article is a glove.
- 38. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the article is a condom having the wearer contacting surface and an outer distal surface with the one or more layers of elastomer therebetween the surfaces and wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material is applied to the wearer contacting surface or to the outer distal surface or to both surfaces of the article.
- 39. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the article is a catheter, or a stent, or an incontinence device having a sheath or sheath type construction, or a cervical cap, or a diaphragm, or an elastomer sheet, or a balloon used for a medical procedure, or a sheath for use with a medical device, or a finger cot, wherein each article has a wearer contacting surface and a distal surface disposed distal to the wearer contacting surface, with the one or more layers of elastomer therebetween the surfaces and wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material is applied to the wearer contacting surface or to the distal surface or to both surfaces of the article.
- 40. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe Vera botanical extract contains less free sugar than an Aloe vera extract.
- 41. The article as defined in claim 30, wherein the non-Aloe vera botanical extract has an adsorption isotherm with a minimum of 110% water weight gain at maximum relative humidity and at approximately 35° C.
- 42. A method of making a flexible article having one or more layers of an elastomer and having a botanical extract incorporated in at least one layer of elastomer comprising the steps of:
a. incorporating a botanical extract into an elastomer emulsion, solution, or plastisol, forming an emulsion, a solution, or a plastisol of an elastomer compounded with a botanical extract having a polysaccharide therein, wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble or miscible in the emulsion, the solution or the plastisol; wherein the botanical extract when added to the emulsion is characterized by the properties of stabilizing the emulsion of the elastomer used in forming the article, lowering a modulus of the elastomer, reducing surface tension of the elastomer, balancing moisture homeostasis, providing antioxidant protection to the finished article, and modifying the rheology of the flexible article by decreasing unwanted flow problems when forming the article; b. dipping article formers into, or filling a mold with, or extruding the emulsion or the solution or the plastisol of the elastomer compounded with the botanical extract, as appropriate for the article being made; c. vulcanizing, polymerizing, curing, evaporating solvent, and/or fusing the emulsion or the solution or the plastisol of the elastomer compounded with the botanical extract, as appropriate, to incorporate the botanical extract into an elastomer matrix, wherein the botanical extract is disposed in a layer of the article.
- 43. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein Step 42a includes selecting a botanical extract of Aloe vera, Nopal, okra, kelp, tamarind, psyllium, carrageenan, chia, flax, carob, guar, xanthan, konjac, cassia, tara, karaya, ghatti, tragacanth, galactomannan, glucomannan, a laboratory produced polysaccharide, and mixtures thereof.
- 44. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is a glove.
- 45. The method of making an article as defined in claim 44, wherein the glove is a single layer glove and the elastomer is selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, and an acrylate-based hydrogel, any other elastomer that can be suspended into an emulsion, and mixtures thereof
- 46. The method of making an article as defined in claim 44, wherein the glove is a bilaminar glove having a first layer having an outer distal surface and a second layer having the wearer contacting surface, wherein the first layer and the second layer are of a similar or a different elastomer, and wherein the botanical extract is incorporated into at least one layer of the glove; wherein the elastomer for the layer of the glove into which the botanical extract is incorporated is an elastomer selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, an acrylate-based hydrogel, a polyvinyl chloride, any elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible into an emulsion, a solution or a plastisol; wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the same emulsion, solution or plastisol, and mixtures thereof; and wherein the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract or a Nopal extract or both.
- 47. The method of making an article as defined in claim 44, wherein the glove is a multi-layer glove having a first layer having an outer distal surface, a layer having the wearer contacting surface and one or more glove layers disposed between the first layer and the layer having the wearer contacting surface and; wherein the botanical extract is in at least one layer of the glove.
- 48. The method of making an article defined in claim 47, wherein the elastomer for the layer of the glove into which the botanical extract is incorporated is an elastomer selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, an acrylate-based hydrogel, a polyvinyl chloride, any elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible into an emulsion, a solution or a plastisol; wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the same emulsion, solution or plastisol; and mixtures thereof, and wherein the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract or a Nopal extract or both.
- 49. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is a catheter or a stent or an incontinence device having a sheath or sheath type construction.
- 50. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is a condom, a cervical cap or a diaphragm.
- 51. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is a dental dam.
- 52. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is an elastomer sheet.
- 53. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is a balloon for use in a medical procedure.
- 54. The method of making an article as defined in claim 53, wherein the balloon is used with a balloon catheter, a urinary catheter, a rectal catheter, an endotracheal tube, a feeding tube, or a cardiac catheter.
- 55. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is a sheath or a tube for use with a medical device.
- 56. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein the article is a finger cot.
- 57. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, further comprising the step of applying a non-Aloe vera coating material to the wearer contacting surface of the article, the non-Aloe vera coating material containing a non-Aloe vera botanical extract having moisture regulating, moisturizing, lubricating and thixotropic properties of a liquid biopolymer and having lubricious, hydrophilic, and moisturizing properties and/or a therapeutic component; wherein the therapeutic component includes, one or more, of wound healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, analgesic, and anti-aging properties.
- 58. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material is a non-Aloe vera botanical extract selected from an extract of Nopal, okra, kelp, tamarind, psyllium, carrageenan, chia, flax, carob, guar, xanthan, konjac, cassia, tara, karaya, ghatti, tragacanth, glucomannan, galactomannan, a non-Aloe vera laboratory produced polysaccharide, and mixtures thereof.
- 59. The method of making an article of claim 58, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material also contains one or more additives, selected from Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, jojoba, rose hips, tea tree oil, flax seed oil, palm oil, acetylsalicylic acid, and mixtures, thereof.
- 60. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the non-Aloe Vera botanical extract contains less free sugar than an Aloe vera extract.
- 61. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the non-Aloe Vera botanical extract has an adsorption isotherm with a minimum of 110% water weight gain at maximum relative humidity and at approximately 35° C.
- 62. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the article is a single layer glove, and wherein the step of preparing the emulsion or the solution or the plastisol, an emulsion is prepared, the elastomer includes one or more of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, and an acrylate-based hydrogel, any other elastomer that can be suspended into an emulsion, and mixtures thereof, and the botanical extract used for incorporation into the single layer glove is Aloe vera extract, and in the step of applying the non-Aloe vera coating material, the non-Aloe vera coating material has a Nopal extract and a Vitamin E therein.
- 63. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the article is a bilaminar glove having a first layer of polyvinyl chloride and a second layer of polyurethane or silicone, and wherein in the step of preparing the emulsion or a solution or a plastisol, an emulsion is prepared, the botanical extract used for incorporation into a layer of the glove is Aloe vera extract, the elastomer is polyurethane or silicone, and in the step of applying a non-Aloe vera coating material, the non-Aloe vera coating material has a Nopal extract and a Vitamin E therein.
- 64. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the article is a multi-layer glove having a first layer having an outer distal surface, a layer having a wearer contacting surface and one or more glove layers disposed between the first layer and the layer having the wearer contacting surface; wherein the elastomer for the layer of the glove into which the botanical extract is incorporated is an elastomer selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane, an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, an acrylate-based hydrogel, a polyvinyl chloride, any elastomer that is suspendable, soluble or miscible into an emulsion, a solution or a plastisol wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the same emulsion, solution or plastisol; and mixtures thereof, and wherein the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract or a Nopal extract or both; and wherein the step of preparing the emulsion, solution or plastisol, the botanical extract is an Aloe vera extract suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the emulsion, solution or plastisol of the elastomer and is incorporated into the layer of the glove and wherein the step of applying the non-Aloe vera coating, the non-Aloe vera coating material has a Nopal extract and a Vitamin E therein.
- 65. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material is applied by spraying, dipping or spray/tumbling.
- 66. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material is dried onto the wearer contacting surface of the article and is mechanically and non covalently linked to the elastomer material forming the wearer contacting surface.
- 67. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the article is a condom having a wear contacting surface and an outer distal surface with one or more layers of elastomer therebetween, and wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material is applied to the wearer contacting surface or to the outer distal surface or to both.
- 68. The method of making an article as defined in claim 57, wherein the article is a catheter, or a stent, or an incontinence device having a sheath or sheath type construction, or a cervical cap, or a diaphragm, or an elastomer sheet, or a balloon used for a medical procedure, or a sheath for use with a medical device, or a finger cot, wherein the article has a wearer contacting surface and a distal surface disposed distal to the wearer contacting surface with one or more layers of elastomer therebetween, and wherein the non-Aloe vera coating material is applied to the wearer contacting surface or to the distal surface, or to both.
- 69. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein Step (a), an emulsion is prepared and the elastomer includes one or more of a natural rubber latex, a synthetic polyisoprene, a chloroprene, a polyurethane an acrylonitrile, a butadiene methylmethacrylate, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, a silicone, an acrylate-based hydrogel, any other elastomer that can be suspended into an emulsion, and mixtures thereof.
- 70. The method of making an article as defined in claim 42, wherein Step (a), a solution or a plastisol is prepared and the elastomer includes one or more of a polyvinyl chloride, a silicone, a polyurethane, an acrylate-based hydrogel, a styrene isoprene styrene, a styrene butadiene styrene, a styrene ethylene butylene styrene, any other elastomer that is suspendable soluble or miscible in a solution or plastisol wherein the botanical extract is suspendable, soluble and/or miscible in the solution or plastisol, and mixtures thereof.
