Claims
- 1. A flexible package formed by a plurality of flexible panel portions, comprising:
a first panel portion having two generally longitudinal edges, wherein the space between the first panel portion edges is a distance A; a second panel portion substantially parallel to the first panel portion, the second panel portion having two generally longitudinal edges, wherein the space between the second panel portion edges is approximately equal to said distance A; at least one access panel portion having two generally longitudinal edges, wherein the space between the edges of the at least one access panel is shorter than said distance A and the access panel edges are operably connected to proximate parallel longitudinal edges of the first and second panel portions; and at least one re-closeable device disposed to the at least one access panel portion and transverse to the edges of the at least one access panel to provide a re-closeable access opening into an inner cavity of the flexible package.
- 2. The flexible package of claim 1, wherein the re-closeable device is a re-closeable zipper device.
- 3. The flexible package of claim 2, wherein the re-closeable zipper device includes a slider zipper device.
- 4. The flexible package of claim 2, wherein the re-closeable zipper device includes a front flange and a back flange for attachment of the re-closeable zipper device to the flexible package.
- 5. The flexible package of claim 4, wherein the front flange and the back flange are both attached to an inner surface of the at least one access panel.
- 6. The flexible package of claim 4, wherein the front flange is attached to an inner surface of the at least one access panel portion, a first portion of the back flange is connected to the first panel portion and a second portion of the back flange is connected to the second panel portion.
- 7. The flexible package of claim 6, wherein the at least one access panel portion includes a at least one tear notch extending some distance into the at least one access panel portion and proximate the at least one re-closeable access device to permit a user to tear away a portion of the at least one access panel to expose the at least one re-closeable access device.
- 8. The flexible package of claim 6, further including a barrier layer disposed on a surface of at least one of the front and back flanges to prevent bonding of the front and back flanges together during formation of the flexible package.
- 9. The flexible package of claim 1, wherein the re-closeable device is selected from a group consisting of the following: a hook and latch device, a repeated use adhesive device, a button snapping device, snap or screw cap device, and a hinged spout device.
- 10. The flexible package of claim 1, including a main webbing, wherein the main webbing forms at least the first panel portion, the second panel portion, and the at least one access panel portion having the transversely integrated at least one re-closeable device.
- 11. The flexible package of claim 1, wherein each of the panel portions are formed from distinct webbings.
- 12. The flexible package of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first panel portion and the second panel portion is gusseted along a longitudinal length of said first or second panel portion proximate the at least one access panel.
- 13. The flexible package of claim 1, further including a handle aperture defined in the flexible package.
- 14. The flexible package of claim 4, wherein inner surfaces of the front flange and the back flange are joined to create a barrier peel seal, and wherein the at least one access panel further includes a tab proximate the at least one access device such that pulling on the tab will separate the front and back flanges at the peel seal for access to the at least one re-closeable device.
- 15. The flexible package of claim 1, further including a valve device integrated to at least one of the first and second panel portions and adapted to evacuate gases out of the inner cavity.
- 16. A flexible package comprising:
a plurality of flexible panel portions forming an inner cavity capable of holding material contents, the plurality of flexible panel portions including:
a front panel portion; a back panel portion, each of the front and back panels having longitudinal edges; at least one side panel portion in substantial perpendicular alignment with the planes of the front and back panel portions at the proximate longitudinal edges of the front and back panel portions; at least one access device disposed to the at least one side panel portion to provide access in and out of the inner cavity through the at least one side panel portion, wherein the attachment of the device is substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis of the at least one side panel portion.
- 17. The flexible package of claim 16, wherein the device is a re-closeable zipper device.
- 18. The flexible package of claim 17, wherein the re-closeable zipper device includes a slider zipper device.
- 19. The flexible package of claim 17, wherein the re-closeable zipper device includes a front flange and a back flange for attachment of the re-closeable zipper device to the flexible package.
- 20. The flexible package of claim 19, wherein the front flange and the back flange are both attached to an inner surface of the at least one side panel portion.
- 21. The flexible package of claim 19, wherein the front flange is attached to an inner surface of the at least one side panel portion, a first portion of the back flange is connected to the front panel portion and a second portion of the back flange is connected to the back panel portion.
- 22. The flexible package of claim 21, wherein the at least one side panel portion includes at least one tear notch extending some distance into the at least one side panel portion and proximate the at least one re-closeable device to permit a user to tear away a portion of the at least one side panel portion to expose the at least one re-closeable device.
- 23. The flexible package of claim 21, further including a barrier layer disposed on a surface of at least one of the front and back flanges to prevent bonding of the front and back flanges together during formation of the flexible package.
- 24. The flexible package of claim 16, wherein the access device is selected from a group consisting of the following: a hook and latch device, a repeated use adhesive device, a button snapping device, and a pour spout device.
- 25. The flexible package of claim 16, including a main webbing, wherein the main webbing forms at least the front panel portion, the back panel portion, and the at least one side panel portion having the transversely integrated at least one access device.
- 26. The flexible package of claim 16, wherein each of the plurality of flexible panel portions are formed from distinct webbings.
- 27. The flexible package of claim 16, wherein at least one of the front panel portion, the back panel portion, and the at least one side panel portion is gusseted.
- 28. The flexible package of claim 16, further including a handle aperture defined in the flexible package.
- 29. The flexible package of claim 19, wherein inner surfaces of the front flange and the back flange are joined to create a barrier peel seal, and wherein the at least one access panel further includes a tab proximate the at least one access device such that pulling on the tab will separate the front and back flanges at the peel seal for access to the at least one access device.
- 30. The flexible package of claim 16, further including a valve device integrated to at least one of the front and back panel portions and adapted to evacuate gases out of the inner cavity.
- 31. The flexible package of claim 16, wherein one of the side panel portions not including the at least one access device is gusseted.
- 32. The flexible package of claim 31, further including a handle aperture extending through the front panel portion, the back the gusseted side panel portion, and the back panel portion to provide a four layer support structure around said handle aperture.
- 33. A flexible package formed by a plurality of attached flexible panel portions forming an inner cavity capable of holding material contents, comprising:
a front panel portion; a back panel portion; first and second side portions; and at least one re-closeable access means attached to at least one of the first and second side portions and adapted to provide selective access to the inner cavity, wherein the re-closeable access means is operably disposed along, and in a substantially transverse relationship to the longitudinal axis of, at least one of the first and second side portions.
- 34. The flexible package of claim 33, wherein the re-closeable access means is a re-closeable zipper means.
- 35. The flexible package of claim 33, wherein at least one of the front and back panel portions is gusseted at a longitudinal gusset line proximate the side portion having the re-closeable access means.
- 36. A method of manufacture forming a flexible package with a re-closeable access device integrated transversely in at least one side panel of the package, the method comprising the steps of:
attaching a roll of flexible main web material to a package forming machine, wherein the main web material includes a plurality of spaced and integrated re-closeable access devices substantially along its length; feeding the roll of main web material into and through the machine on a machine running path; folding a portion of the main web material at a folding station of the machine, leaving the portion of the main web material having the re-closeable access device unfolded and exposed; cutting away a material portion of the main web material having one of the integrated re-closeable access devices such that the cut away material is diverted away from the machine running path of the main web material; feeding the cut away material into a turning station of the machine, wherein the cut away material is turned upside down and fed back toward the machining running path of the main web material such that the turned cut away material is substantially brought back into alignment with the machining running path of the main web material; and joining the edges of the main web material and the turned cut away material and forming the flexible package with an inner cavity, wherein the turned cut away material defines a side panel of the package with the re-closeable access device disposed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the side panel and the re-closeable access device adapted to provide selective access into the inner cavity of the package.
- 37. The method of claim 36, wherein the package forming machine is a form fill and seal machine.
- 38. The method of claim 36, further including creating a longitudinal gusset line along a portion of the main web material to create a gusseted panel portion.
- 39. The method of claim 38, wherein the gusseted panel portion includes a side panel portion of the formed flexible package distal the side panel with the disposed re-closeable access device.
- 40. The method of claim 38, wherein the gusseted panel portion includes at least one of a back panel portion and a front panel portion of the formed flexible package.
- 41. A flexible package comprising:
a plurality of flexible panel portions forming an inner cavity capable of holding material contents, the plurality of flexible panel portions including
a front panel portion; a back panel portion, each of the front and back panels having longitudinal edges; at least one side panel portion attached to and in substantial perpendicular alignment with the planes of the front and back panel portions at the proximate longitudinal edges of the front and back panel portions; at least one re-closeable access device including
a front flange sealed to a surface of the at least one side panel portion within the inner cavity; a back flange sealed partially to a surface of the front panel and partially to a surface of the back panel, both of said front panel and back panel surfaces being within the inner cavity; and wherein the at least one re-closeable access device is sealed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the at least one side panel and the sealing of the front flange and the back flange providing selective access in and out of the inner cavity through the at least one side panel portion at the at least one re-closeable access device.
- 42. The flexible package of claim 41, wherein the at least one side panel portion includes at least one tear notch extending some distance into the at least one side panel portion and proximate the at least one re-closeable access device to permit a user to tear away a portion of the at least one side panel portion to expose the at least one re-closeable access device.
- 43. The flexible package of claim 41, further including a tear notch extending some distance into the front panel portion and the back panel portion proximate the at least one re-closeable access device to permit a user to tear away a portion of the front panel portion and the back panel portion to define a substantially isolated pour spout at the portion of the at least one side panel portion having the integrated re-closeable access device.
- 44. The flexible package of claim 43, wherein tearing away the portion of the front panel portion and the back panel portion at the tear notch by the user further tears away a portion of the back flange from the front panel portion and back panel portion.
