Claims
- 1. A connector for connecting circuits on a first circuit board to a mating connector mounted to a second circuit board, comprising:
an insulative connector body; a plurality of conductive terminals, the terminals including body portions supported by said connector body and the contact portions extending from a face of said connector body, the terminal contact portions being arranged in distinct arrays; a cover member for partially enclosing said terminal contact portions, the cover member having a hollow receptacle for receiving a portion of the mating connector therein, said terminal contact portions being fixed in their arrays by at least one terminal-cover support member that engages said cover member, said cover member being solely supported over said terminal contact portions by said support member, whereby said cover member and terminal contact portions move together to compensate for misalignment of said mating connector with said cover member, said cover member having a first and second openings formed in at least one sidewall therein; and, a retainer for retaining said terminal-cover support member in a supporting position within said cover member, the retainer including at least a press arm and a hook arm disposed thereon, the hook arm extending into said first opening to engage said cover member and hold said retainer in position thereon, and the press arm extending through said cover member second opening and into pressing contact against said terminal-cover support member.
- 2. The connector of claim 1, wherein said cover member includes at least one inner wall, the cover member inner wall including an interior shoulder disposed thereon, and said terminal-cover support member having an engagement face formed thereon and said retainer press arm engaging said terminal-cover support member along an opposite face of said terminal-cover support member to thereby press said terminal-cover support member engagement face against said cover member interior shoulder.
- 3. The connector of claim 2, wherein said retainer includes a base portion, and said hook and press arms are spaced from each other on said retainer base portion.
- 4. The connector of claim 3, wherein said hook arm extends transversely away from said retainer base portion and said press arm is a curved member that extends away from said retainer base portion.
- 5. The connector of claim 4, wherein said press arm extends away from said hook arm.
- 6. The connector of claim 1, wherein said terminal support member includes a plurality of individual support bars.
- 7. The connector of claim 6, wherein each of said support bars supports a single array of said terminals.
- 8. The connector of claim 1, wherein said cover member includes a plurality of sidewalls and said cover member includes an interior shoulder disposed on at least two of the cover member sidewalls, each of said two sidewalls including first and second openings formed therein;
said terminal-cover support member engaging said interior shoulders of said two cover member sidewalls; and, said connector includes a second retainer, the second retainer including a press arm and a hook arm, the press arms of said two retainers extending through said second openings of said cover member into contact with said terminal-cover support member press said terminal-cover support member engagement face against said cover member interior shoulders.
- 9. The connector of claim 8, wherein said cover member two sidewalls are disposed on said cover member opposite each other, and cover member second openings are aligned with each other and said two retainer press arms each extend a predetermined distance from said retainer into contact with said terminal-cover support member so as to exert an equal pressing force thereon.
- 10. The connector of claim 1, wherein said cover member is square
- 11. The connector of claim 8, wherein said terminal-cover support member includes a plurality of individual support bars.
- 12. The connector of claim 11, wherein each of said support bars supports a single array of said terminals.
- 13. The connector of claim 1, wherein said cover and terminal-cover support members and said retainer are formed from an insulative material.
- 14. The connector of claim 1, wherein said retainer hook arms include enlarged end portions that engage said cover member first opening.
- 15. The connector of claim 1, wherein said cover member includes at least one channel formed on an inner face of said cover member and said second opening being aligned with the channel and communicating therewith, a portion of said terminal-cover support member being received with said channel and said press arm extending at least partially into said channel into contact with said terminal-cover support member portion.
- 16. The connector of claim 1, wherein said terminal-cover support member includes a plurality of individual support bars and said cover member includes a plurality of second openings, and said retainer includes a plurality of press arms, the press arms extending through said second openings into contact with said support bars.
- 17. The connector of claim 16, wherein single press arms contact single support bars.
- 18. The connector of claim 16, wherein said terminals include flexing portions interposed between said contact portions and said body portions, and said support bars engage said terminal at location intermediate said terminal contact and flexing portions.
- 19. The connector of claim 8, wherein each of said retainers include a plurality of press arms, each of said press arms extending through a single one of said second openings.
- 20. The connector of claim 1, wherein said cover member includes a plurality of sidewalls and said cover member includes a plurality of channels disposed on inner faces of two opposing cover member sidewalls, each of said two opposing sidewalls including first and second openings therein;
the second openings communicating with said channels, and said terminal-cover support member including a plurality of elongated individual support bars, each of said support bars being received within a pair of said channels; and, said connector includes a second retainer, the second retainer including press arm and hook arms, the press arms of said two retainers extending through said second openings of said cover member into contact with ends of said support bars.
- 21. A board-to-board connector for connecting circuits on a first circuit board to a mating connector mounted to a second circuit board, comprising:
a connector body, a plurality of conductive terminals supported by said connector body, the terminals having contact portions extending from a face of said connector body, a cover member having a plurality of walls that cooperatively define a hollow receptacle for partially enclosing said terminal contact portions and for receiving a portion of the mating connector therein, a plurality of terminal support members engaging said terminals and holding them in place in distinct terminal arrays within said cover member, said cover member being solely supported over said terminal contact portions by the support members, whereby said cover member, terminal support members and terminal contact portions move together to compensate for misalignment of said mating connector with said cover member, said cover member having first openings formed in at least two of said cover member wall; and, at least a pair of retainers for retaining said terminal support member in engagement positions with said cover member, the retainers each including a press arm and an engagement member disposed thereon, the retainer engagement members engaging said cover member and said press arms extending through said cover member first openings into pressing contact against said terminal support members.
- 22. The board-to-board connector of claim 22, wherein said terminal support members include a plurality of support bars, each support bar supporting one of said terminal arrays in a predetermined spacing at a location intermediate free ends of said contact portions and said connector body.
- 23. The board-to-board connector of claim 22, wherein said cover member includes a plurality of channels formed on inner surfaces of said cover member walls, pairs of the channels receiving a single support bar therein.
- 24. The board-to-board connector of claim 23, wherein said press arms of said retainers extend through said first openings to contact said support bars and hold them in place within said cover member.
- 25. The board-to-board connector of claim 24, wherein pairs of said press arms contact opposite ends of said support member.
- 26. The board-to-board connector of claim 23, wherein said retainers are formed from sheet metal and said retainer engagement members include bent ends that are received in slots formed in said cover member.
- 27. The board-to-board connector of claim 26, wherein said retainers include openings disposed between said engagement members and said press arms and said cover member includes a plurality of lugs that are received within said retainer member openings.
- 28. The board-to-board connector of claim 22, wherein said retainers include a base portion, a plurality of engagement members extending therefrom for engaging said cover member, and a plurality of press arms spaced apart from said engagement members, said press arms having a curved configuration and said cover member includes an interior shoulder disposed in at least two opposing sidewalls of said cover member, said press arms pressing said support members against said interior shoulders.
- 29. A connector for connecting circuits on a first circuit board to a mating connector mounted to a second circuit board, comprising:
an insulative connector body, a plurality of conductive terminals, the terminals including body portions supported by said connector body and the contact portions extending from a face of said connector body, the terminal contact portions being arranged in distinct arrays; a cover member for partially enclosing said terminal contact portions, the cover member having a hollow receptacle for receiving a portion of the mating connector therein, said terminal contact portions being fixed in their arrays by a plurality of terminal support members that engage said cover member, said cover member being solely supported over said terminal contact portions collectively by said terminal support members, whereby said cover member and terminal contact portions move together to compensate for misalignment of said mating connector with said cover member, said cover member including an interior shoulder and said cover member having first and second openings spaced apart from each other along said cover member; a pair of retainers for retaining said terminal support members in a supporting positions within said cover member, the retainers including a plurality of press arms and a hook arms, the hook arms extending into said first openings to engage said cover member and hold said retainers in position thereon, and the press arms extending through said cover member second openings and into pressing contact against said terminal support member, said terminal support members having engagement faces defined thereon said retainer press arms engaging said terminal support members along faces opposite said engagement faces to thereby press said terminal-cover support member engagement faces against said cover member interior shoulders.
- 30. A connector for connecting circuits on a first circuit board to a mating connector mounted to a second circuit board, comprising:
an insulative connector body, a plurality of conductive terminals, the terminals including body portions supported by said connector body and the contact portions extending out from a face of said connector body, a cover member partially enclosing said terminal contact portions, the cover member defining a hollow receptacle for receiving a portion of the mating connector therein, said terminal contact portions being fixed in position within said cover member by a plurality of terminal support members, said cover member being solely supported over said terminal contact portions by said terminal support members, whereby said cover member and terminal contact portions move together to compensate for misalignment of said mating connector with said cover member, said cover member having a first and second openings formed in at least one sidewall therein; retainers for retaining said terminal support members in supporting positions within said cover member, said retainers including a plurality of press arms and engagement members extending therefrom, the engagement members engaging said cover member first openings, said cover member including a plurality of channels formed on inner faces of said cover member, said second openings communicating with the channels, and ends of said terminal support members member being received with said channels, said retainer press arms extending through said second openings into contact with said terminal support members.
