Claims
- 1. Apparatus for transversely shearing cylindrical plastic tubing comprising:
- a blade element having a cutting edge and pivotally mounted for partial rotation about a pivotal axis and in a plane extending normal to the longitudinal axis of the tubing, said blade element having a plurality of adjacent teeth secured to an edge thereof other than said cutting edge;
- a base;
- means pivotally supporting the blade element on the base;
- tubing holding means detachably mounted on said blade element supporting means and including arcuate surfaces for directly engaging and supporting at contact areas spaced axially from each other along the tubing, a tubing to be cut over substantially 180.degree. of the outer surface of the tubing;
- an operating handle movably supported over said base and pivotally connected thereto; and
- means interconnecting the operating handle and the blade element for incrementally pivoting the blade element when said operating handle is pivoted through a predetermined path relative to said base, said interconnecting means comprising:
- an elongated pawl lever having a first end connected to the operating handle and a second end adapted for engagement with said teeth by entry into the space between adjacent pairs of teeth on said blade; and
- indexing means connected between the pawl lever and the blade element for guiding the second end of the pawl lever to positions of engagement with consecutive teeth upon each repetition of the movement of said operating handle through said predetermined path, and for retracting said blade element after a conduit has been cut through by the blade element and thereby restore the blade element to its original operative position.
- 2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said means pivotally supporting the blade element on the base comprises a pair of side plates positioned on opposite sides of the blade element and defining a pair of jaw receiving cavities on opposite sides of said plane in which said blade element undergoes partial rotation; and
- wherein said tubing holding means comprises a pair of jaw elements each detachably mounted in one of said jaw receiving cavities.
- 3. Apparatus for transversely shearing cylindrical plastic tubing comprising:
- a blade element having a cutting edge and pivotally mounted for partial rotation about a pivotal axis and in a plane extending normal to the longitudinal axis of the tubing, said blade element having an arcuate slot formed therethrough with said slot extending in an arc about the pivotal axis of said blade element, said blade element having a plurality of adjacent teeth secured to an edge thereof other than said cutting edge;
- a base;
- means pivotally supporting the blade element on the base;
- tubing holding means detachably mounted on said blade element supporting means and including arcuate surfaces for directly engaging and supporting a tubing to be cut over substantially 180.degree. of the outer surface of the tubing at contact areas spaced axially from each other along the tubing;
- an operating handle movably supported over said base and pivotally connected thereto; and
- means interconnecting the operating handle and the blade element for incrementally pivoting the blade element when said operating handle is pivoted through a predetermined path relative to said base, said interconnecting means comprising:
- an elongated pawl lever having a first end connected to the operating handle and a second end adapted for engagement with said teeth by entry to the space between adjacent teeth on said blade; and
- indexing means connected between said pawl lever and the slot in said blade element for alternately guiding said second end of said pawl lever to a position of engagement between two adjacent teeth on said blade upon pivotation of said operating handle in one direction, and then guiding said engaging means to a position of alignment with a different pair of adjacent teeth on said blade upon pivotation of said operating handle in a direction opposite said one direction of pivotation thereof, said indexing means further cooperating with said pawl lever for retracting said blade away from said tubing holding means when said operating handle is pivoted to an extreme position in a direction opposite its direction of pivotation for incrementally pivoting the blade element by means of said pawl lever and indexing means.
