Claims
- 1. A process to make a fluorided alumina compound comprising:
- a) calcining a large surface area alumina to form a calcined gamma-alumina; and
- b) contacting the calcined gamma-alumina with an anhydrous solution of a fluoriding agent;
- wherein said fluoriding agent is present in an amount sufficient to incorporate from about 6 to about 12 weight percent fluorine onto the calcined gamma-alumina, based on the weight of the calcined gamma-alumina.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the amount of said fluoriding agent is sufficient to incorporate from about 6 to about 12 weight percent fluorine onto the calcined gamma-alumina, based on the weight of the calcined gamma-alumina.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein said large surface area alumina has a surface area within a range of about 200 to about 600 square meters per gram prior to contacting said fluoriding compound.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein said large surface area alumina has a surface area within a range of about 250 to about 500 square meters per gram prior to contacting said fluoriding compound.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein said fluoriding agent is selected from the group consisting of ammonium bifluoride (NH.sub.4 HF.sub.2), ammonium fluoroborate (NH.sub.4 BF.sub.4), ammonium silica fluoride ((NH.sub.4).sub.2 SiF.sub.6), and mixtures thereof.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein said fluorided alumina is dried at a temperature within a range of about 300.degree. to about 700.degree. C., for a time within a range of about 1 to about 10 hours.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 further comprising incorporating a chromium compound into said fluorided alumina.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 further comprising drying said chromium containing fluorided alumina.
- 9. A process according to claim 7 further comprising the step of heating the thus chromium impregnated fluorided alumina at a temperature within a range of about 300.degree. to about 700.degree. C. for a time within a range of about 1 to about 10 hours, in an oxidizing atmosphere.
- 10. A process according to claim 7 wherein said chromium impregnated fluorided alumina comprises chromium within the range of about 0.1 to about 10 weight percent chromium, based on the weight of dried fluorided alumina.
- 11. A composition prepared in accordance with the process of claim 1.
- 12. A catalyst system composition prepared in accordance with the process of claim 9.
- 13. A process to make a fluorided alumina compound comprising:
- a) calcining a large surface area alumina having a surface area within a range of about 200 to about 600 square meters per gram to form a calcined gamma-alumina; and
- b) contacting the calcined gamma-alumina with an anhydrous solution of a fluoriding agent selected from the group consisting of ammonium bifluoride (NH.sub.4 HF.sub.2), ammonium fluoroborate (NH.sub.4 BF.sub.4), ammonium silica fluoride ((NH.sub.4) to SIF.sub.6), and mixture thereof;
- wherein said fluoriding agent is present in an amount sufficient to incorporate from about 6 to about 12 weight percent fluorine onto the calcined gamma-alumina, based on the weight of the calcined gamma-alumina.
- 14. A process according to claim 13 wherein the amount of said fluoriding agent is sufficient to incorporate from about 6 to about 12 weight percent fluorine onto the calcined gamma-alumina, based on the weight of the calcined gamma-alumina.
- 15. A process according to claim 13 wherein said fluorided alumina is dried at a temperature within a range of about 300.degree. to about 700.degree. C. for a time within a range of about 1 hour to about 10 hours.
- 16. A process according to claim 13 through the comprising incorporating a chromium compound into said fluorided alumina.
- 17. A process according to claim 15 further comprising the step of heating the thus chromium impregnated fluorided alumina at a temperature within a range of about 300.degree. to about 700.degree. C. for a time within a range of about 1 to about 10 hours, in an oxidizing atmosphere.
- 18. A composition prepared in accordance with a process of claim 13.
