Claims
- 1. A fluid absorption receiver for solar radiation, comprising:
- a working fluid comprising a radiant energy absorber selected from the group consisting of halogens, interhalogens, a buffer gas and mixtures thereof, provided that a halogen is present;
- a hollow, semicircular containment for containing said working fluid having a first end and a second end; and
- a hollow, semicircular vacuum containment for insulating said semicircular containment and admitting solar radiation having a first end, a second end, a transparent inner wall, and a transparent outer wall.
- 2. The receiver of claim 1, wherein said absorber is selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, interhalogens of chlorine, bromine, iodine and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The receiver of claim 1, wherein said buffer gas is selected from the group consisting of argon and helium.
- 4. A method of absorbing solar radiation comprising:
- directing a working fluid comprising a radiant energy absorber selected from the group consisting of halogens, interhalogens, an inert gas, and mixtures thereof, provided that a halogen is present from the first end to the second end of a hollow, semicircular containment;
- irradiating said working fluid to effect both thermal absorption and the photolytic dissociation of said halogens and interhalogens;
- transferring the chemical energy stored in said dissociated halogens and interhalogens into thermal energy without reradiation by means of buffering with an inert gas;
- coupling said heated and irradiated working fluid with means for recovering thermal energy; and
- reintroducing said working fluid into the first end of said hollow, semicircular containment, after said thermal energy recovery.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein said absorber is selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, interhalogens or chlorine, bromine, iodine and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The method of claim 4, wherein said buffer gas is selected from the group consisting of argon, helium and mixtures thereof.
