Claims
- 1. In a fluid flow restrictor for incorporation in a valve or the like, and of the type comprising a series of axially aligned and stacked discs forming an annular restrictor and providing a multiple of series-parallel flow paths between the inside and outside of the assembled disc stack to effect pressure drop and energy dissipation, said series flow paths comprising radially disposed slot-like openings formed on said discs and said parallel flow paths comprising annular passage-forming means formed on said discs and providing fluid communication between sets of said series flow paths, the improvement characterized by
- (a) said discs being formed with a plurality of radially spaced annular baffle-forming ribs projecting axially from each face thereof,
- (b) adjacent ribs of each disc forming annular recesses of substantially greater radial width than the radial thickness of said ribs,
- (c) said discs having on each face thereof a plurality of radially-extending slots formed through said annular baffle-forming ribs,
- (d) said radially-extending slots being arranged and configured whereby the slots of each rib of a disc are radially aligned with the slots of each adjacent rib of said disc to form a plurality of radially-aligned slots extending from the inner perimeter of said disc to the outer perimeter of said disc,
- (e) the ribs on opposed faces of adjacent discs in the stack being offset whereby in the assembled stack the annular ribs of one disc are received in the annular recesses of the other adjacent disc,
- (f) the ribs and recesses being of substantially equal height whereby interfitting sets of ribs define annular flow passages,
- (g) said radially-disposed slots each including an open side,
- (h) each of said open sides being substantially sealed by the confronting face of an annular recess of an adjacent disc in the assembled stack,
- (i) said discs when assembled in said stack being so mutually oriented that the radially-aligned slots of the ribs on one side of a disc are offset from the radially-aligned slots of the interfitting ribs on the confronting side of the adjacent disc to interpose an annular rib of said adjacent disc between each pair of radially-aligned slots of said disc thereby providing said plurality of series-parallel flow paths between the inside and outside of the assembled disc stack.
- 2. A fluid flow restrictor according to claim 1, further characterized by
- (a) the radially aligned slots on one side of a disc being angularly offset from the radially aligned slots on the other side of the disc, whereby when a plurality of discs of a stack are aligned in a uniform angular orientation, the radially aligned slots of each disc will be angularly offset from the radially aligned slots of each adjacent disc.
- 3. A fluid flow restrictor according to claim 1, further characterized by
- (a) said radially aligned slots being mechanically cut in said ribs and having a depth slightly less than the height of said ribs.
- 4. A fluid flow restrictor according to claim 1, further characterized by
- (a) said interfitting sets of ribs defining annular flow passages of greater effective flow area than the flow area of said radial slots.
- 5. A fluid flow restrictor according to claim 4, further characterized by
- (a) the flow area of said annular passages being greater than one-half the flow area of said slots, whereby said annular passages constitute, in effect, expansion chambers in relation to said slots.
- 6. A fluid flow restrictor according to claim 5, further characterized by
- (a) the flow area of said annular passages is greater than the flow area of said slots.
- 7. A fluid flow restrictor according to claim 1, particularly adapted for utilization with compressible fluids, further characterized by
- (a) means for guiding the fluid to flow in a generally radial direction, and
- (b) said aligned radial slots being of progressively increasing width from the inside to the outside of the assembled disc stack.
- 8. A fluid flow restrictor according to claim 1, further characterized by
- (a) said restrictor stack being of generally hollow cylindrical form,
- (b) a valve plug closely received by and axially movable in said stack and operable to open and close passages through the stack,
- (c) a valve seat positioned adjacent one end of said restrictor stack,
- (d) one or more pairs of the restrictor discs immediately adjacent said valve seat having substantially fewer radial slots than discs further removed from said valve seat.
