Claims
- 1. A fluid coupling, comprising:
a male coupling member; a female coupling member, said coupling members being capable of moving into interfitted and coupled relationship; a latching mechanism including latch members on the coupling members moveable into and out of latched engagement and an actuating member axially slideably mounted on one of the coupling members and moveable between a latching position forcing the latching members into latched engagement and an unlatched position allowing the latching members to move out of latched engagement; and key coding elements on the coupling members allowing coupling members to move into interfitted and coupled relation and the latching members to move into latching position when the coding elements are matched but precluding movement into said latched engagement and said latching position when the coding elements are mismatched.
- 2. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein said movement of the latching members into and out of latched engagement is movement radially of the coupling members.
- 3. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein the movement of the actuating member between latching and unlatching positions is axial of the coupling members.
- 4. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein said movement of the latching members into and out of latched engagement is movement radially of the coupling members; and wherein the movement of the actuating member between latching and unlatching positions is axial of the coupling members.
- 5. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein the key coding elements extend endwardly from their respective coupling members in opposed relationship to each other.
- 6. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein the key coding elements are disposed radially inwardly of the latch members on their respective coupling members.
- 7. The coupling of claim 6,
wherein the actuating member is disposed on its coupling member radially outwardly of the latching member on said coupling member.
- 8. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein the key coding element on one of the coupling members is an arcuate groove; and wherein the key coding element on the other coupling member is an arcuate key, said groove and key being of a size, shape and position so as to fit one within the other when the key coding is matched and being of a size, shape and position so as not to fit one within the other when the key coding is mismatched.
- 9. The coupling of claim 8,
wherein the depth, width and/or diameter of the groove and the key are varied in order to establish matched and unmatched coding elements.
- 10. The coupling of claim 8,
wherein the key is releasably fitted in the second coupling member.
- 11. The coupling of claim 8,
wherein the arcuate key is a ring.
- 12. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein the latch members on one of the coupling members includes a plurality of radially extending holes circumferentially spaced about the coupling member; wherein the latch members also include a plurality of balls radially moveably mounted within the holes; wherein the actuating member is a sleeve axially, slideably moveable on said one coupling member between a latching position forcing the balls radially inwardly of the holes and an unlatched position allowing the ball to move radially outwardly of the holes; and wherein there is a latch member on the other coupling member comprising a circumferential groove alignable with the holes and the balls when the coupling members are in interfitted and coupled relationship.
- 13. The coupling of claim 1,
wherein one of the key coding elements is a key insert ring connected to the second coupling and projecting endwardly of the second coupling member toward the first coupling member.
- 14. The coupling of claim 13,
wherein the ring includes a base fitted within the second coupling member, an annular key projecting towards the first coupling member, and a radial shoulder.
- 15. The coupling of claim 13,
wherein the shoulder projects outwardly of the key.
- 16. The coupling of claim 13,
wherein the shoulder projects inwardly of the key.
- 17. The coupling of claim 12,
wherein there is a shoulder projecting radially from the key on one side thereof, and wherein there is a shoulder projecting radially from the key on the side thereof opposite from the ledge.
- 18. The coupling of claim 12,
wherein the ring includes a base fitted within the second coupling member, an annular key projecting towards the first coupling member, and a radial ledge.
- 19. The coupling of claim 18,
wherein the ledge projects outwardly from the key.
- 20. The coupling of claim 18,
wherein the ledge projects inwardly of the key.
- 21. The coupling of claim 12,
wherein the ring includes a base fitted within the second coupling member, an annular key projecting towards the first coupling member, a radial shoulder, and a radial ledge.
- 22. A coded fluid coupling, comprising:
a first coupling member having a coupling end and a fluid passageway opening through the coupling end; a second coupling member having a coupling end and a fluid passageway opening through the coupling end of the second coupling member the passageways defining axes of their respective coupling, the coupling members having a cully coupled condition where in the coupling ends of the members are in contact and the passageways are in fluid communication, a key coding system having a plurality of codes and including an annular groove in one of said ends circumscribing its passageway and an annular key in the other of said ends circumscribing its passageway, the groove and the key each having several parameters including inside and outside diameters, axial depth and radial width, each code of the system being defined by a matching groove and key with corresponding parameters allowing the key to fit in the groove and the coupling members to move out fully coupled condition upon axial movements of the ends of the couplings toward each other into said coupled condition, the code of the key code system comprising a plurality of said matched pairs of grooves and keys, at least one of the corresponding parameters of each code in the system differing from the corresponding parameters of every other code in the system.
- 23. The coupling of claim 22,
wherein each code of the key coding system has only one groove and one key.
- 24. The coupling of claim 22,
wherein the key is an insert ring fastened to its coupling member.
- 25. The coupling of claim 22,
including a latching ring on one of the coupling members and a latching annulus on the other coupling member[s] receiving the ring when the coupling members are in said coupled condition, and wherein the groove and the key are circumscribed by the latching ring and annulus in said coupled condition.
- 26. The coupling of claim 22,
wherein there are several codes that differ from each other by the diameters of the grooves and keys.
- 27. A coded fluid coupling, comprising:
a first coupling member having a coupling end and a fluid passageway opening through the coupling end; a second coupling member having a coupling end and a fluid passageway opening through the coupling end of the second coupling member, the passageways defining axes of their respective coupling, the coupling members having a fully coupled condition wherein the coupling ends of the members are in contact and the passageways are in fluid communication, a key coding system having a plurality of codes and including an annular groove in one of said ends circumscribing its passageway and an annular key in the other of said ends circumscribing its passageway, the groove and the key each having several parameters including inside and outside diameters, axial depth and radial width, each code of the system consisting of a single pair of matching groove and key with corresponding parameters allowing the key to fit in the groove and the coupling members to move into fully coupled condition upon axial movement of the ends of the couplings toward each other into said coupled condition, the codes of the key code system comprising a plurality of said matched pairs of grooves and keys, at least one of the corresponding parameters of each code in the system differing from the corresponding parameters of every other code in the system.
- 28. A coupling member comprising:
a coupling body having a fluid passageway therein; a valve seat in the passageway; a valve movably mounted in the passageway for movement into and out of seating engagement in the valve seat; a biasing member yieldably bearing against the valve; and an elastic band coupled to the biasing member yieldably urging the valve into the seat.
- 29. The coupling member of claim 28,
wherein the band is located in the passageway.
- 30. The coupling member of claim 28,
wherein the band is located outside of the passageway.
- 31. The coupling of claim 30,
wherein a lever is pivoted in the body having an inner end in the passageway and an outer end outside of the passageway; and wherein the band is coupled to the outer end of the lever and yieldably urges the inner end to apply pressure against the valve toward or away from the valve seat.
- 32. The coupling of claim 29,
wherein an anchor is fixed in the passageway; wherein the band is coupled to the anchor and to the valve and yieldably urges the valve toward or away from the valve seat.
- 33. The coupling of claim 28,
wherein the biasing member includes a piston slideably moveably mounted in the passageway and coupled to the valve.
- 34. The coupling of claim 33,
wherein a lever is pivoted in the body having an inner end in the passageway against the piston and an outer end outside of the passageway; and wherein the band is coupled to the outer end of the lever and yieldably urges the inner end to apply pressure against the piston.
- 35. The coupling member of claim 33,
wherein there is a piston axially slideably mounted in the passageway and coupled to the valve; wherein an anchor is fixed to the body; and wherein the band has one end connected to the anchor and an opposite end coupled to the piston and yieldably urging the piston and the valve toward or away from the valve seat.
- 36. The coupling of claim 33,
wherein the piston has a notch extending transversely therein; wherein the body has a longitudinal bore extending substantially parallel to the passageway and offset therefrom; wherein the body has a transverse bore extending from the longitudinal bore to the passageway in alignment with the notch; wherein an anchor is located in the longitudinal bore in spaced relation to the transverse bore; wherein a lever is positioned in the transverse bore having an end extending into the notch in engagement with the piston and an end in alignment with the longitudinal bore, the lever being fulcrummed within the transverse bore for pivoting movement therein; and wherein the band encircles the anchor and the outer end of the lever and yieldably urges the inner end against the piston.
- 37. The coupling of claim 33,
wherein the piston has aligned slots on opposite sides thereof; wherein an anchor is secured to the body and extends through the slots transversely of the passageway; wherein a pin is connected to the piston in spaced relation to the anchor; and wherein the band encircles the pin and the anchor and yieldably urges the piston and the valve toward or away from the valve seat.
- 38. A fluid coupling, comprising:
a male coupling member; a female coupling member, said coupling members having fluid passageways and being capable of moving into interfitted and coupled relationship with their fluid passageways in fluid communication; a valve in one of the passageways having open and closed positions; a biasing mechanism in one of the passageways yieldably urging the valve into one of said positions without the use of a coded compression spring; a latching mechanism including latch members on the coupling members moveable into and out of latched engagement and an actuating member axially slideably mounted on one of the coupling members and moveable between a latching position forcing the latching members into latched engagement and an unlatched position allowing the latching members to move out of latched engagement; and key coding elements.
- 39. A fluid coupling comprising:
a first coupling member; a second coupling member, said coupling members having fluid passageways and being capable of moving into interfitted and coupled relationship with their passageways in fluid communication; a valve in the passageway of the first coupling member and movable into open position when the coupling members are in said coupled relationship; an anchor fixed in the first coupling member; a piston slideably mounted in the passageway of the first coupling member and coupled to the valve; a biasing member in the passageway of the first coupling members and coupled to the piston; an elastic band coupled to the biasing member and the anchor and yieldably urging the piston against the valve; a latching mechanism including latch members on the coupling members movable into and out of latched engagement and an actuating member axially slideably mounted on one of the coupling members and moveable between a latching position forcing the latching members into latched engagement and an unlatched position allowing the latching members to move out of latched engagement; and key coding elements on the coupling members allowing coupling members to move into interfitted and coupled relation and the latching members to move into latching position when the coding elements are matched but precluding movement into said latched engagement and said latching position when the coding elements are mismatched.
- 40. The coupling of claim 39,
wherein there is a transverse bore in the first coupling member communicating with the passageway thereof and opening out of the coupling member adjacent to the actuating member, one of the anchor and the biasing member being disposed in the bore.
- 41. The coupling of claim 39,
wherein the coupling members, the valve, the piston, the biasing member, the band, the latching mechanism and the key coding elements are noncorrosive.
